Product Information

Specifications:

  • Product: Padded Limb Restraints
  • Features: Double-security closure
  • Intended Use: For bed and stretcher use only

Product Usage Instructions

Application Instructions:

CAUTION:
Posey Keys MUST be readily available to staff at all times. In an emergency, it is difficult to cut the cuffs with scissors to free the patient.

  1. Bring the ends of the strap down through the inside of the cuff.

Applying the Cuffs:

  1. Wrap the neoprene piece around the wrist/ankle ensuring proper positioning. Attach hook-and-loop pieces firmly.
  2. Ensure a proper fit by sliding one finger between the cuff and the patient’s wrist/ankle.
  3. Close the quick-release buckle on the cuff, adjusting the strap snugly but not too tight to restrict circulation.

To Unlock the Cuffs:
Insert the Posey Key into the lock and turn counterclockwise. Ensure not to turn clockwise to prevent jamming.

Bed Safety:
Refer to FDA guidelines and bed manufacturer’s instructions for ensuring bed safety when using limb restraints.

Additional Safety Instructions:
Ensure Posey Keys are accessible, regularly check for any damage or loose connections, and discard if the device is damaged or unable to lock properly.

FAQ:

  • Q: When should I use additional body or limb restraints?
A: Additional restraints may be necessary if the patient exhibits highly aggressive behaviour, attempts to access medical lines or wounds, or poses a risk of self-injury.

  • Q: How do I report incidents related to device use?
A: Report any serious incidents related to device use to TIDI Products and the relevant Competent Authority in your region.

DESCRIPTION OF PRODUCT
Padded limb restraints with double-security closure. For bed and stretcher use only.

INTENDED USE:

  • Patients assessed to be at risk of disrupting life-saving treatments (e.g., chronic tube pulling) or in danger of injury to themselves or others.
  • Follow your hospital’s restraint policies and procedures which comply with USA CMS guidelines and state laws, or other governing agencies outside the USA.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Do not use this device with someone who has continued highly aggressive or combative behaviour, self-destructive behaviour, or is deemed to be an immediate risk to others or yourself. Clinicians may need to use additional interventions in conjunction with restraints.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

CAUTION:
Posey Keys MUST be readily available to staff at all times. In an emergency, it is difficult to cut the cuffs with scissors to free the patient. Follow these steps to apply the device (repeat steps 1-3 on each side):

  1. Bring the ends of the strap down through the inside of the side rails so they do not interfere when the side rails are raised. Thread the end of the strap over the top, around the frame at least once, and through the lock. Make sure that the straps are attached to the frame that moves with the patient (Fig. 1) (do not attach to side rail or head/footboard), out of the patient’s reach.
  2. Pull the strap(s) snug and close the lock. Check that the lock “clicks” shut. If a lock is not completely closed, it can pop open. Before leaving the patient’s side, test the lock by trying to open it without the key.
  3. Adjust the bed strap(s) to allow desired freedom of movement, without compromising patient or caregiver safety. Tuck any excess strap out of the patient’s reach.
APPLYING THE CUFFS

APPLYING THE CUFFS: (Repeat steps 1-3 for each side):

  1. Wrap the neoprene piece around the wrist/ankle so the buckle and connecting strap are on the ulnar side of the wrist or lateral malleolus of the ankle. Attach the black hook-and-loop pieces and pull back the black pull tab on the blue or red fuzzy piece, followed by the blue or red hook-and-loop pieces. The fuzzy piece should be sandwiched between the two pieces of hook (Fig. 2). Be sure to overlap at least one inch (3 cm).
  2. Press the hook-and-loop closure together firmly and make sure it adheres securely. Slide ONE finger (flat) between the cuff and the inside of the patient’s wrist/ankle to ensure proper fit (Fig. 3).
  3. Close the quick-release buckle on the cuff. Insert ONE finger (flat) under the buckle and pull the strap snugly, but not so tight as to restrict circulation. Release the quick-release buckle, twist the buckle 180°, and reconnect (Fig. 4). Listen for a “snapping” sound.

TO UNLOCK THE CUFFS:

  1. Insert the Posey Key into the lock and turn counterclockwise. Turning clockwise may cause jamming (Fig. 5).
  2. NOTE: Universal Posey Keys fit all Posey locks.

PRECAUTIONS

  • A clinical assessment and decision are required when used with monitoring lines or if the patient has a wound or dislocated/fractured limb.
  • Check the patient regularly to ensure that circulation is not impaired. Serious injury may occur if the cuffs restrict circulation when the limb holder is applied.
  • Before each use, check cuffs and straps for cracks, tears,/excessive wear or stretch, broken buckles or locks, and/or that hook-and-loop adheres securely as these may allow the patient to remove the cuff. Discard if the device is damaged or if unable to lock.
  • WARNING: Additional or different body or limb restraints may be needed (visit tidiproducts.com):
    • If the patient pulls violently against the bed straps.
    • To reduce the risk of the patient getting access to the line/wound/tube site.
    • To prevent the patient from flailing or bucking up and down and causing self-injury.

BED SAFETY:
Refer to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), or other governing agencies outside the USA, for the most recent Hospital Bed Safety Guidelines and the bed manufacturer’s instructions for use.
