Product Usage Instructions
Safety Instructions:
Read and follow all instructions and warnings provided in the manual to prevent bodily injury or property damage. Ensure power supply is turned off before installation.
Installation:
- Mount the luminaire onto standard recessed ceiling or wall junction boxes (4 octagon, 4 square, 4 round, 3-1/2 round new work, 3-1/2 round old work).
- Connect the supply leads inside the junction box to the luminaire using the provided wire nuts (C).
- Bundled any excess wire length inside the junction box.
- Remove the luminaire lens by rotating it counter-clockwise.
- Secure the luminaire to the junction box using #8-32 PH screws (B) through the appropriate slots.
Dimming:
The Halo HLS luminaire is dimmable with many 120V Leading Edge (LE) and Trailing Edge (TE) phase control dimmers. Consult dimmer manufacturer for specific load compatibility. Some dimmers may require a neutral wire in the wallbox.

HALO® recessed luminaires (fixtures) are designed to meet the latest NEC
requirements and are certified in full compliance with UL. Before attempting the installation of any recessed lighting luminaire check your local electrical code. This code sets the wiring standards for your locality and should be carefully studied before starting. -
SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS AND WARNINGS
Warning
- Risk of Fire – MINIMUM
- 75°C SUPPLY CONDUCTORS. If uncertain, consult an electrician.
- Risk of Electric Shock –
- To avoid possible electrical shock, be sure that power supply is turned off at fuse box or circuit breaker before installing or servicing luminaire.
- Risk of Fire/Electric Shock –
- Installation requires knowledge of \ luminaire electrical systems. If not qualified, do not attempt installation. Contact a qualified electrician. Luminaire wiring and electrical parts may be damaged when drilling for installation. Check for enclosed wiring and components.
- WARNING – Risk of fire or electric shock. Install this kit only in luminaires that have the construction features and dimensions shown in the photographs and/or drawings and where the input rating of the retrofit kit does not exceed the input rating of the luminaire.
- To prevent wiring damage or abrasion, do not expose wiring to edges of sheet metal or other sharp objects
Caution
Edges may be Sharp –
Wear gloves while handling.
- Connect fixture to a 120 volt, 60 Hz power source. Any other connection voids the warranty.
- Fixture should be installed by persons with experience in household wiring or by a qualified electrician. The electrical\ system, and the method of electrically connecting the fixture to it, must be in accordance with the National Electrical Code and local building codes.
- The HLS is wet location listed for covered ceilings only. Acceptable installations would be inside a home, building or on a porch with a roof.
- Only those open holes indicated in the photographs and\ / or drawings may be made or altered as a result of kit installation. Do not make or alter any open holes in an enclosure of wiring or electrical components during kit installation.
- Please examine all parts that are not intended to be replaced by the retrofit kit for damage and replace any damaged parts prior to installation of the retrofit kit.
- This device is not intended for use with emergency exits.
- THE RETROFIT KIT IS ACCEPTED AS A COMPONENT\ OF A LUMINAIRE WHERE THE SUITABILITY OF THE COMBINATION SHALL BE DETERMINED BY AUTHORITIES HAVING JURISDICTION. PRODUCT MUST BE INSTALLED BY A QUALIFIED ELECTRICIAN IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE APPLICABLE AND APPROPRIATE ELECTRICAL CODES. THE INSTALLATION GUIDE DOES NOT SUPERSEDE LOCAL OR NATIONAL REGULATIONS FOR ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS.
DIMMING
Halo HLS is designed for dimming with many 120V Leading Edge (LE) and Trailing Edge (TE) phase control dimmers. Dimming capability may be enhanced with select dimmers that feature low-end trim adjustment. (Consult dimmer manufacturer for specific load compatibility and application information. Note some dimmers require a neutral in the wall box.) For the latest Halo HLS product information, please refer to specifications online at www.cooperlighting.com.

ELECTRICAL JUNCTION BOXES
Mounting to recessed-mounted standard junction boxes
NOTE: The module installs onto many standard recessed ceiling and wall-mounted
junction boxes (Fig. 1).

(Box types and site condition vary. Installer to ensure compatibility at fit, wiring and proper mounting.)
MOUNTING INTO JUNCTION BOXES
1. Use the provided wire nuts (C) to connect the supply leads inside the
junction box to the luminaire.
2. Bundle any excess length of wire inside the junction box in preparation
for installation.
3. Twist off the lens of the luminaire by rotating it counterclockwise. (Fig.
2)
4. Secure the luminaire to the Junction Box using #8-32 PH screws (B) through
the appropriate slots (depending on the manufacturer/size of jbox being used).

5. Replace the lens back onto the luminaire. Align tabs of lens to slots in
luminaire and rotate clockwise. (Fig. 4)
MOUNTING INTO JUNCTION BOXES W/ ADAPTER BRACKET
- Secure the adapter bracket to the Junction Box using the provided #8-32 x 1in FH bracket screws (B) through the appropriate countersunk slot. (Depending on the manufacturer/size of junction box being used). (Fig. 5)
- Install a pair of provided #8-32 PH screw (B) onto the adapter bracket, utilizing the appropriate length screw based on junction box depth/clearance.
- Use the provided wire nuts to connect the supply leads inside the junction box to the luminaire.
- Bundle any excess length of wire inside the junction box in preparation for installation.
- Twist off the lens of the luminaire by rotating it counter clockwise. (Fig. 2)
- Secure the luminaire to the Junction Box using #8-32 PH screws (B) through the luminaire’s slots. (Fig. 5)
- Replace the lens back onto the luminaire. Align tabs of lens toslots in luminaire and rotate clockwise. (Fig. 4)
MOUNTING INTO RECESSED HOUSINGS W/ EXTENSION SPRING
- Twist off the lens of the luminaire by rotating it counterclockwise. (Fig.2)
- Secure the adapter bracket (D) to the HLS luminaire using the provided (B) #8-32 x 1in FH bracket screws through the appropriate countersunk slot. (Fig. 6)
- Attach a pair of provided Springs (E) to the keyhole slots inside the housing (Fig. 7a). For 4in Housing, attach the springs into Edison socket cutouts. (Fig. 7b)
- Attach the Edison adapter (F) by rotating it clockwise into the Edison socket. (Fig. 8)
- Make the connections of Edison adapter to the luminaire and place the wire nuts. (Fig. 9)
- Pull the spring and attach into the adapter bracket (D) fixed to the luminaire. (Fig.10)
- Slowly release HLS until it rests on the ceiling and center over housing opening.
- Re-install the lens. Align tabs of lens to slots in luminaire and rotate clockwise. (Fig. 4)
- HLS4 – works with 4-in and 5-in housings
- HLS6 – works with 4-in, 5-in, and 6-in housings
- HLS9 – works with 4-in, 5-in, and 6-in housings
For use with any 4, 5, or 6-inch diameter recessed luminaire\ constructed of steel or aluminum with an internal volume that exceeds 866.1cm3 (52.9inch3) in addition to those noted below:
