Safety Notes
Please note the following safety notes to avoid malfunctions, damage or physical injury:
-
This manual belongs to the product. It contains important notes on operating the unit. Please pass it on along with the unit if it is handed over to a third party!
-
Read the manual fully and make sure you have understood the manual prior to using the chain hoist. Due to improper use, the load can fall down. Death or injury can occur from improper use of the chain hoist!
-
Do not leave packaging material carelessly lying around. Plastic bags may become a deadly toy for children.
-
The chain hoist is intended to be used in the normal working area for lifting, lowering, and holding loads by manpower. The chain hoist is not intended for lifting persons. When combined with a trolley, the chain hoist is also capable of horizontal transport of loads. Please also mind the safety instructions of the trolley before using it. While transporting the load do not pull the hand chain.
-
Only qualified personnel should operate chain hoists.
-
Always wear a safety helmet, protective gloves, and protective boots when working with the chain hoist. Tie up long hair. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. There is a risk of injury by pulling in.
-
Do not work with the unit in areas where explosion hazard is present on account of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Do not use the chain hoist in galvanizing baths or acid baths, furnaces, etc. Do not use the hoist for transporting dangerous loads such as hot-dip components, acid substances, lyes etc. Do not immerse the load chain or the whole chain hoist in liquids of any kind.
-
Keep the chain lubricated and free from dirt.
-
In order to avoid sparking neither the hand chain nor the load chain should strike the floor or any other objects.
-
Never exceed the rated capacity of the chain hoist (see chapter Technical Data). It is forbidden to lift loads less than 10% of the rated capacity.
-
Before each use visually inspect the chain hoist. Prior to use, the unit check the brake function!
-
The chain hoist is designed to be operated in ambient temperatures between -10°C and +40°C. At ambient temperatures below 0°C the brake should be checked for freezing.
-
Make sure the attachment points for the load to be lifted are suitable and can bear the expected forces. The attachment points have to be selected to ensure that the load can be securely lifted.
-
Do not use the chain hoist if the load chain is twisted, deformed, cracked, kinked or shows wear and corrosion or is damaged in any other way. Do not use the chain hoist if the hook is widened, deformed, or damaged. Do not use the hook if the hook latch (2) is missing.
-
Do not use inappropriate attachments such as wires or bolts to connect components.
-
Make sure the inclination angle while lifting the load does not exceed 60°. This is especially important when lifting unsymmetrical load.
-
Do not use the load chain as a sling. Do hot attach the load to the tip of the hook? Always avoid side pull (pulling diagonally).
-
Do not hook the load directly on the tip of the hook. Make sure the hand chain and the load chain are guided that way to exclude grinding or sliding contact with external constructions or components. Do not lift or pull the load over sharp-edged objects or parts. Do not shock or swing the lifted load.
-
Do not turn the load while it is lifted.
-
Do not drag the load along the ground. Make sure the load is completely in the air.
-
Make sure the chain hoist moves freely under load in order to avoid incorrect additional loading. Make sure the load hook during lifting operation is perpendicular to the center of the load (S) in order to prevent pendulum movements during lifting.
-
Only operate the chain hoist when the load is safely secured and protected against slipping and detaching.
-
Only use manual force to lift the load.
-
Do not pull with other persons on the hand chain to lift the load.
-
Do not use more than one chain hoist to lift the load.
-
Do not leave the lifted load unattended.
-
Do not use the chain hoist to lift people.
-
Do not lift the load over people. Do not stay under the lifted load.
-
If the load is lifted make sure no persons stay or pass under the suspended load and do not work in this area. Keep bystanders out of reach.
-
When suspending the chain hoist make sure not to hurt yourself by the chain hoist itself, the chains, or the load. Always be careful while slinging the load and closing the hook latch. There is a risk of injury!
-
Do not use the chain hoist as a plaything (e.g. swing).
-
Do not use the load chain as a ground connection during welding. Do not execute grinding, welding or cutting work on the lifted load. To avoid welding beads on the chains do not perform welding work close to the chain hoist.
-
If you cannot move the chain furthermore, stop working immediately and check the chain hoist for damage.
-
Do not attach further loads on the already lifted load.
-
Do not throw the chain hoist down. Always low down the chain hoist carefully.
-
Make sure the chain hoist is regularly inspected by a competent person.
-
Do not use the endpin (part no. 24 in the exploded diagram on page 28) as an operational limit device.
-
For safety reasons, modifications and alteration of the chain hoist are prohibited. Do not perform surface treatments (galvanizing etc.).
-
Do not try to repair or modify the hooks or the chains (e. g. by welding, bending, burning, etc.). Always replace a damaged part. Only use original accessories.
-
Do not disassemble the unit or attempt to repair it yourself. It does not contain parts serviceable by you. In the case of questions or problems, turn to our customer support.
Operation
Intended Use
- The chain hoist is designed for lifting, lowering, or holding uploads with manual force. The chain hoist is not intended to transport people.
- The intended use also includes an operation following the operating instructions. Any use beyond these parameters (different media, applying force) or any changes (reconstruction, no original accessory) can lead to serious risks and is regarded as use that is contrary to the intended purpose. The operator is liable for any damage caused by improper use.
Visual Inspection – Load Brake –
Unpack the chain hoist and check all parts for damage in transport. Do not use
the chain hoist if the unit is damaged.
Check the load brake function by attaching a load and raise over a short
distance (20 – 30 cm). Lift and lower the load several times. When releasing
the hand chain the load must be safely held in any position and should not
slip down.
In case of brake failure do not use the chain hoist!
Using
Make
sure the structure for mounting the chain hoist has sufficient strength to
carry the chain hoist and the load to be lifted.
Please note that the minimum weight to be lifted is 200 kg.
Only use lashing ropes or attachment chains that are specifically adjusted to
the load weight. When attaching (slinging) the load, make sure the load is
seated perpendicular to the center of the hook and that the load suspension
angle is 60° or less on both sides of the axis.
- Pull the hand chain (4) clockwise in order to lift the load. Always pull the hand chain uniformly and do not pull the chain jerkily. When lifting the load you must hear regular click sounds and lifting should be smoothly.
- Pull the hand chain counter clockwise in order to lower the load. When lowering the load no noise should be heard and pulling the chain should be easily.
When releasing the hand chain the load has to stop in the respective position.
Cleaning/Storing
Cleaning
- Wipe the chain hoist with a cloth/cleaning rag.
- Do not immerse the chain hoist into liquids.
- To avoid spark formation and danger of ignition in explosive atmospheres, protect the chain hoist from corrosion. Sparks and danger of ignition can occur if special material pairings clash together, such as non corrosion-resistant steel or cast iron against aluminium, magnesium or pertinent alloy. This applies if rust – even surface rust – is generated on the surface. To protect the chains from rust, a light oil film should be applied to the chains. The hand wheel cover (1), the brake disc (6), the bearing race (7) and the pawl pin (8) should be lightly lubricated in order to avoid fixed corrosion of the brake.
- Do not use oil (grease, rust preventive oil etc.) in areas near fire or sparks. Otherwise this may result in ignition.
- Keep the friction plate (part no. 5 in the explode diagram on page 28) free from oil, grease, water and dirt in order to avoid sticking of the disc. The friction plate must be clean and dry at all times!
Storing
- Preferably store the chain hoist indoors in a dry place that is protected from dust, dirt and extreme temperatures. If the chain hoist is used extensively outdoors, cover the chain hoist to protect it from adverse weather effects.
- Before storing the unit pull the hand chain up to approx. 10 cm in order to lower the load hook and to ensure that the brake is released. Attention: When storing the chain hoist at ambient temperatures below 0°C, the brake disc can freeze. Always store the chain hoist with the brake in closed position. Turn the hand wheel clockwise and simultaneously hold the load chain firmly in your hand.
Inspection/Maintenance
Inspection
To maintain good continuous and satisfactory operation, a daily and regular
inspection procedure must be initiated. The inspection classification is as
follows:
– daily inspection resp. inspection before each use
– frequent/periodic inspection
The frequency of the inspections is subject to the intensity of operation and
the lifted load.
A normal service is a service that involves operation with randomly
distributed loads with less than 65% of the max. load capacity.
A heavy service is a service that involves operation within the max. load
capacity.
A severe service is a service that involves normal and heavy service with
abnormal operating conditions (adverse weather conditions, acid baths,
furnaces, explosive atmospheres etc.)
Carry out daily inspection by visual examination of the following parts:
the carry hook,
the lifting hook,
the hand chain,
the load chain and
the hook latch.
- The hooks should not have deformation or flaws,
- The neck of the hooks should rotate/move smoothly,
- The hook latches should open and close securely and easily and the latches should not be deformed,
- The hand chain and the load chain should not be deformed, damaged or bent,
- There should be no corrosion or dirt on the chains,
- The chains must be oiled.
- The dimensions of the hooks in new condition are:
Carry Hook
Throat Opening (a) = 27 mm
Hook Thickness (h) = 32 mm
Hook Width (b) = 22 mm
Load Hook
Throat Opening (a) = 27 mm
Hook Thickness (h) = 32 mm
Hook Width (b) = 22 mm
-
Compare the throat opening; the hook thickness and the hook width of the carry and the load hook with the corresponding values when purchase and make sure the values are not higher or lower than the limits (see Technical Data on page 30). Use callipers to measure the values.
-
If the hand chain slips down it might be due to elongation or abrasion of the chain. Check the dimensions of all chain links.
-
Have the chain hoist inspected at least once a year by a competent person. A competent person is someone, who has professional training, experience and actual operation to provide the necessary expertise for the inspection of material handling equipment. Maintenance and inspection should only be carried out by qualified personnel.
-
In adverse operating conditions the inspection periods should be performed in shorter intervals. Please also mind the inspection intervals on page 27.
-
After repair work or maintenance check the chain hoist frequently by operating it with and without load. Check if the load stops at various positions and is held securely in position. If the load moves or slips the chain hoist should be taken out of service and must be repaired. Also listen for unusual sounds which may indicate trouble.
-
Never repair or maintain the chain hoist while it is loaded.
-
Do not use the chain hoist if one of the following defects is found on the unit itself or on the load chain: breaks, deformation, flaws, grooves, cracks, strong corrosion, heating over the admissible temperature allowed, welding beads etc.
-
If parts have to be replaced, always use original parts.
-
Have the load chain repaired if the length of the load chain has elongated by more than 3%, measured over the pitch length (PL) for 5 links.
-
Have the load chain repaired if the diameter of the links (d) shows wear for more than 10%.
Load Capacity of 2 Tons
Pitch Length (PL) for 5 Links
Normal Value = 90 mm
Limit Value = 92.7 mm
Normal Value for 1 Chain Link = 18 mm
Limit Value for 1 Chain Link = 18.5 mm
Chain Diameter (d)
Normal Value = 6 mm
Limit Value = 5.7 mm
-
Have the carry hook or the load hook replaced if the throat opening (a) is widened by more than 10% or if the thickness (h) is widened by more than 5%.
-
Have the hooks replaced if wear limit of the hook width (b) exceeds 5%.
-
Replace the hooks if the hook latch does not seat properly or if the hook latch is missing completely.
-
Use callipers to measure the pitch length (PL) and the diameter of the chain links (d).
