INTRODUCTION

Thank you for purchasing the Donner STARRYKEY25 Midi Keyboard!
The STARRYKEY25 is a rich functional midi keyboard that you can use to create your own music only connecting computers or tablets with a USB cable. The portably velocity-sensitive piano-style keyboard makes it easy to compose your unique music once the inspiration strikes.

PRECAUTIONS

Please read the following in detail first before operation.

  • Keep and follow these instructions.
  • Do not store it in the following environments: Direct sunlight, high temperature, excessive humidity, excessive dust, and strong vibration.
  • Do not disassemble or modify this product to avoid the danger of fire and electric shock.
  • Do not submerge in water or drop water onto or into it.
  • Do not place this product on an uneven surface or any other unstable place.
  • Before cleaning the instrument, always remove the USB cable. Do not clean the product with thinners, alcohol, or similar chemicals to avoid discoloration.
  • Do not insert small objects into the product.
  • Unplug this product during lightning storms and long-time disuse.

2. Recommended DAW Software

STARRYKEY25 will show as an input device and output device in the DAW midi settings. Before starting composing music, you need to set STARRYKEY25 as the input device in the “MIDI Setup” of DAW. After this setup, your software can receive notes and controller data from STARRYKEY25. (Every application does this a little differently, so refer to your software user manual for the settings. If you have any questions, please contact customer service.)

3. Power Supply
If you connect your STARRYKEY25 to your computer via USB, no additional power supply is required and your STARRYKEY25 can be charged directly from your computer. However, if you use the STARRYKEY25 without a USB port on your computer, you will need an external power supply (5V 500mA).

BASIC OPERATION

  1. As a MIDI controller, the keyboard does not actually produce sound on its own when played. Instead, it sends MIDI notes and data to a connected external MIDI synthesizer or sound software on a connected computer.
  2. The “STARRYKEY25 Editor” software gives you a visual and intuitive way to edit the various MIDI messages. Please visit our official website https://donnermusic.com/support/downloads [Electronic PIANO —> MIDI KEYBOARD] to download. The software user manual can be downloaded from “Help” on the software.

1 . Quick Start

  1. Connect the STARRYKEY25 to your computer using the supplied USB cable. The unit will receive power and transmit MIDI data via the USB connection.
  2. Configure your DAW or virtual instrument software and set the STARRYKEY25 as the MIDI Input and MIDI Output device.
  3. Connect the STARRYKEY25 with an external MIDI device, and connect a MIDI cable with 5 Pin to the MIDI OUT on the rear of the STARRYKEY25, and to the MIDI IN of the external device.

MIDI OUT
Use a midi cable with 5-pin to connect the STARRYKEY25 to an external MIDI device.
MIDI-USB JACK
Use a USB cable to connect your computer or other devices to power the keyboard or data transmission.
SUSTAIN PEDAL JACK
Connect a sustain pedal to this jack via pedal cable. Notes will be sustained after depressing the pedal.

3. Front Panel Function
INTRODUCTION:
CC: Continuous Controller, this is a MIDI message capable of transmitting a range of values, usually 0-127. (Hereinafter called CC).
CN: Channel, this can be simply understood as a path, generally used for voice classification, usually 1-16. (Hereinafter called CN).
MODE: Edit the trigger mode of pads and buttons, there are two modes as follows:

  • Toggle: It sends its message continuously when it is first pressed and stops sending it when it is pressed again. (Light on when pressed, light off when pressed again).
  • Momentary: It sends its message while being pressed and stops sending it when it is released. (Light on when short pressed, light off when released).

CURVE: The keyboard and pad have three kinds of curves. (as shown in the figure).

AT-AFTER TOUCH: For the pad and keyboard, after the first touch, pressing it with force again will send continuous signals to make the notes produce multiple effects when the AT function is enabled.

KEYBOARD

  1. STARRYKEY25 features 25 velocity-sensitive keys for playing and sending notes messages.

  2. Various assignments and parameters can be edited through “STARRYKEY25 Editor”.

PITCH BEND WHEEL

  1. Move this wheel to send pitch bend midi messages which can control the pitch bend in the sound. Move up will increase the pitch; moving it down will decrease the pitch.
  2. Can be mapped by DAW software. 
  3. CN message also can be set for pitch through “STARRYKEY25 Editor”.

MODULATION WHEEL

  1.  Move this wheel to send modulation midi messages which can control the amount of vibrato or tremolo in the sound. Move up will increase the vibrato; moving it down will decrease the vibrato.
  2. Can be mapped by DAW software.
  3. Various assignments can be set for modulation, including CC, CN message, CC (Min and Max) message- Output range of the Modulation Wheel through “STARRYKEY25 Editor”.

ASSIGNABLE PAD (PAD 1-PAD 8)

  1. Assignable velocity-sensitive pads can be edited through “STARRYKEY25 Editor” software, including MIDI note/CC message/CN message/AT type/MODE type/Curve mode.

  2. The pad’s color can be edited according to your preferences through “STARRYKEY25 Editor”

  3. By default, the MIDI data output by the pad is typically used for performing drum and percussion instruments. The default output for the 8 percussion pads is as follows:

PAD BANK
Press to switch BANK N BANK B/ BANK C/ (Corresponding to red, green, and blue), there are 24 pads for you to edit. The default CC of Bank A is 36-43, Bank B is 44-51, and Bank C is 52-59.

FULL LEVEL

  1. Press the [FULL LEVEL] button to turn it on (light on). Once press it to turn off (light off).
  2. The maximum value of output for both the percussion pad and keyboard no matter how much force it is pressed.

TRANSPOSE- / TRANSPOSE+
The transpose function allows you to adjust the pitch of the notes being played up or down by one or more semitones.

  1. Semitone down and Semitone up, adjustable 12 semitones (-12 to +12 semitones) respectively.
  2. Press the [TRANSPOSE+] to raise the pitch of the notes by one semitone. Press the [TRANSPOSE-] to lower the pitch of the notes by one semitone.

OCTAVE- / OCTAVE+
The octave function allows you to adjust the pitch of the notes being played up or down by one or more whole octaves.

  1. Octave up and Octave down, adjustable by 4 octaves (-4 to +4 octaves) respectively.
  2. Press the [OCTAVE+) to raise the pitch of the notes by one octave. Press the [OCTAVE-) to lower the pitch of the notes by one octave.

ASSIGNABLE KNOB

  1. The knob is freely programmable and needs to map by DAW software for realizing function.

ASSIGNABLE BUTTON

  1. The button is freely programmable and needs to map by DAW software for realizing its function.

  3. The button’s color can be edited according to your preferences through “STARRYKEY25 Editor”.

RESTORE FACTORY SETTINGS
Restoring factory settings can be operated through uSTARRYKEY25 Editor”, which will clear all data and restore it to its default state.
