Instructions
- STEP 1: Locate the damaged shift cable end.
- STEP 2: Remove the damaged bushing from the cable housing by prying outward with a small screwdriver or pick.
- STEP 3: On some vehicles, it may be easier to remove the whole shift cable end by removing the fork-shaped retainer. NOTE: A new fork-shaped retainer has been provided in case the original is damaged during removal. Not all vehicles use this retainer.
- STEP 4: Re-install the new bushing. Soaking the bushing in hot water will make it temporarily softer for easier installation. NOTE: Two bushings have been provided. Some applications use the same bushing at both ends of the shift cable.
- STEP 5: The leading flange of the bushing must be deformed to install it into the cable end. Be sure this flange resumes its shape after installation. A small flathead screwdriver can be used carefully to help coax the flange back into its relaxed state.
- STEP 6: With the bushing pressed into the shift cable housing, connect the shift cable end to the shift lever arm by firmly pressing the end of the cable onto the arm. The bushing/cable end has to be pushed onto the end of the shift lever arm with a little bit of force to fully seat.
IMPORTANT : The cable is not fully attached until the barb on the shift lever arm protrudes from the top of the bushing and the cable clicks into place. Pliers may be used to help seat the cable fully onto the arm.
