CRAFT SUPPLIES Semi Heart Cheese Knife Kit
Turning Mini Cutlery
Supplies Needed
- 1/4″ Drill Bit
- Project Blank
- Revolving Center
- Chuck or Faceplate
- 2″ x 2″ x 2″ Waste Block
- Glue (Thick CA or Epoxy)
- Sandpaper/Finish
- Pen Press or Clamp
- Eye and Ear Protection
Turning Instructions

Select a 2″ x 2″ x 3/1-2″ blank and mark the center for drilling.

Drill a 1/4″ hole about 1-1/4″ deep.

Mount a waste block in the chuck.

Turn a 1″ long tenon, to fit snugly into the drilled hole in the blank. Also, turn a shoulder slightly larger than the tenon for the blank to sit against.

Mount the blank on the tenon. If the fit is loose, wrap masking tape around the tenon until the fit is tight. Advance the revolving center against the center end of the blank to provide support.

Rough the blank down to round using a Roughing Gouge or Spindle Gouge.

Measure the length and inside diameter of the ferrule. Turn a tenon on the drilled end of the handle to fit the ferrule.

Finish turning the handle making sure to leave a small amount of waste material on the revolving center end.

Sand the handle through 320 grit, and finish with steel wool. Use a food-safe Finish to seal and finish the handle.

Remove the handle from the lathe. Cut the waste piece off the handle with a Parting Tool or handsaw if you prefer. Sand and finish the end.

Align the blade with the wood grain for the best appearance. Use CA glue or Epoxy to glue the blade and ferrule in place.
Hint: If the shank fits too tight, enlarge the hole by running the drill bit in and out of the handle a few times until the shank fits. If the hole is too big, add extra epoxy to fill the gap. Wipe away excess glue. -
Center punch a hole in the end of the blank for the decorative brad and tap the brad into place.
