PREPARATION
You must open your hood in order to install the MadStad system. No drilling or
modification is required, just basic hand tools including a 4mm Allen wrench
and a #2 Phillips screwdriver. Installation for the Single and Double systems
is pretty much the same, just twice as many adjustable brackets.
STEP 1: Open your hood!
STEP 2: If you have a windshield installed, remove it. They are held on by
four screws (two per side) and once those screws are out tilt the shield
forward a bit and pull it backward out of the tab slots on the dash.
STEP 3: Remove the colored top panels at the center of your dash. They are
snapped into three hidden holes as shown below. Simply use your fingers to
pull the panels out of these holes.
Please note the two unused round holes under each panel. STEP 4: Insert the provided M6 well nuts into the round holes you
just exposed.
STEP 5: Remove the radio. First you need to remove the four screws at the
corners of the bezel (cover plate). You will need a very small 2.5mm Allen
wrench.
After the screws are out, lift the plate off and be careful of the button
description inserts. Sometimes they do not stay glued in and will fall out.
*If no radio, remove the storage bin by placing slight pressure on top lip and pulling outward. Once the radio cover plate is off, extract the radio by pushing the four locking tabs inward to unsnap it from the dashboard housing. When the unit comes loose, gently pull it out and let it hang off to the side, or pull the plugs off of the back and remove it altogether. However youdon’t necessarily need to do that; you just need to be able to get your hand in to reach up under the center of the dashboard. STEP 5: Remove the center support post. If you don’t have one then just pull out the two plastic plugs that are in the center of the dash. Otherwise, remove the two screws as shown below, and before the second one falls out put your hand in under the dash and grab the aluminum mounting plate that was holding these two screws in (shown below). You won’t need these parts.STEP 6: Install the MadStad center post. We have provided a much stronger and stiffer brace plate (see below) and this goes in up underneath the two center dash holes. The rubber bumpers must be facing up. Hold this plate in place underneath the dash and line up the holes. Then set our center post on top and screw it in with the M6 x 20mm screws provided and a lock washer under each screw head. STEP 6: Install the MadStad bases. There is a left and right acrylic base which our adjustable brackets bolt to. They are shown below as if you are looking at them from the front of the car. You can’t install them incorrectly; they will only fit one way! The dashboard mounting points for each base are shown below. Three M6 well nuts must be set into the dash as shown.
Set the base on the dash by first inserting the front tab into the front slot
you see in the photo (with the “Leave open” hole). Before you do anything
else, take an M6 x 20 screw with a plastic washer on it, and partially thread
it into a well nut (as shown at right).
This will make it easier to insert that well nut into the slot hole and then
through the base tab hole below it. Make sure that you wiggle it all the way
through both holes, otherwise it won’t grip properly. For 2017+ models the
rubber guard needs to be removed, not replaced.Line up the other three base holes with their corresponding
well nuts, insert an M6 x 25 screw with plastic washer through these holes
then snug all four screws up. There is no need to tighten hard; simply tighten
until they are good and snug.
STEP 6: Install the MadStad brackets.
The knob should be at the top of the base and facing outward, as in the photo
at right. Insert two M6 x 16 screws through the adjustable bracket holes, then
through the base. On the inside place an M6 flat washer then M6 lock nut on
each screw and tighten using a 4 mm Allen wrench and 10 mm crescent or
adjustable wrench. Repeat this process on the other base. If you are
installing a Double shield system then you simply attach a matching bracket on
the other side of each base. The final result should look like the photos
below.STEP 6: Install
the windshield.
Before you set the windshield onto the brackets, pre-install the outer four
mounting screws and their washers as in the diagram at right. One rubber
washer sits against the front of the windshield with the plastic flat washer
under the head of the screw. The other rubber washer slides over each screw on
the back side of the windshield.
On the center holes of the Single “blade” shield you will need to install the flat center brace behind the windshield as shown at right and below. The V-shaped part of the brace goes upward and the four small rubber bumpers go against the back side of the windshield. Put the rubber washers on the back side of the brace to hold it in place.
SETTING THE SHIELD ONTO THE BRACKETS
Due to the large size of the Single windshield, we recommend that you have a helper hold the other side of the shield. Hold it over the MadStad bracketsand insert each screw into its corresponding rubber well nut on the brackets. Use a #2 Phillips screwdriver (NOT a power drill or driver) to tighten each screw until snug, and usually that means about 1/8” to 1/4″ of screw tip is protruding out the back side of the rubber well nut. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN! They should be snug, not supertight. Too much pressure could cause your windshield to crack. For the double-shield system attach the screws and washers the same way. STEP 7: Go for a test ride! The final Single setup should look like this:
Notes on Windshield Angle
The MadStad single shield is adjustable for both height and angle. Simply
loosen the two outer knobs a turn or two, grab the windshield near the center
and pull up or push down to set the height wherever you want it, then tighten
the knobs back up. The center bracket does not adjust and only moves up and
down in the case of the Single system. You can change the angle of the
windshield at the outer brackets (by tilting each bracket back, then
tightening the knob), which effectively puts a twist into the windshield. This
will not harm the windshield and can have a positive effect on the airflow and
wind noise. Experiment with this feature to see if it gives you smoother
and/or quieter airflow.
The Single system center bracket has two screws with lock nuts and they are
assembled to be snug enough so they don’t rattle, yet loose enough that the
bracket can slide up and down. If either of these screws is too tight or too
loose, use a 4mm Allen wrench and 10mm crescent or adjustable wrench to set
the tension.
The holes in the center bracket are for mounting various accessories such as
your GPS holder, smartphone holder, rear-view mirror, etc. They are designed
to fit 6mm screws.
