Installing The Fork Clamps
Our MadStad Z900RS windshield kit is a fork tube mounted system. There are two clamps per side which are connected together by mounting plates with quick- release spools on them. Each clamp assembly consists of a U-Clamp, a Mounting Block and long screws with nuts and washers as shown on Page 1.
A. Take the U-Clamp and slide it around the fork tube, mounting holes to the
outside as seen here.
B. Place the mounting block inside the clamp opening making sure the set screw
and countersunk holes are to the outside. Slide a long screw with a flat
washer on it through the clamp and block as seen at right. Note: The head of
the screw should be facing the front of the bike.
C. Place a lock nut on the other side of the clamp and thread it on with your
fingers. You may may have to pinch the clamp together slightly to make sure
the screw tip protrudes through the block so you can thread the nut on. You
can snug the nut up slightly with an M3 Allen wrench and M8 open-end wrench
but don’t tighten yet.
D. Once the first nut is on, slide in the second long screw with a flat washer
on and put the other nut on the back side, then snug it slightly as well.
E. Repeat this process for all four clamps, two on each fork tube. Each clamp
assembly should be snug, but you should still be able to rotate and slide them
on the fork tubes.
Installing Side Mounting Plates
A. The two clamps per side now get connected by the mounting plates. Make sure
the open hole circled in the photo is facing forward and oriented up and
against the top clamp, just as seen in this photo to the right. Slide the top
clamp up to the top of the fork tube and attach the plate to the mounting
block using the M6 x 15 flat head screws as shown here.
Tighten those down with an M4 Allen wrench.
B. Position the lower clamp to align with the bottom of the plate. Fasten with
another pair of flat head screws.
Tighten. The result will be a pair of clamps connected by the mounting plate
as seen in this photo at right.
C. Repeat this step on the other fork and make sure both clamp assemblies are
all the way up against the top of the forks and parallel to each other as seen
below.
Final Clamp Tightening and Adjustment
The best way to make sure both fork clamp assemblies are parallel to each other is to attach the quick-release brackets to the mounting plates and attach the shield.
A. Before you can attach the adjustable brackets you need to retractthe spring loaded latch pins (shown at right). Pull the pin all the way out until it stops, then rotate it counter-clockwise and it will lock in the outward position. If it doesn’t stay back at first, try it again, sometimes it takes a couple of tries. Do that on both of these brackets.
B. The two slots on the brackets slide onto the black posts of the mounting
plates. Slide each one on and make sure both notches are fully seated. You
don’t need to release the latch pin for now, just mount the two brackets and
see if they are parallel at the front of the bike. Next set the windshield
against the mounting holes on the brackets. If the shield holes don’t match up
then rotate the brackets and clamps slightly to align. You can go ahead and
attach the windshield to the brackets if you like (see Page 5) or if
everything lines up and is centered then you know the fork clamp brackets are
now parallel and can mount the windshield later.
C. Gently slide the adjustable brackets back off of the side plates and make
sure both fork clamp assemblies are up at the top of the fork tubes, up
against the top triple clamp. Insert the M3 Allen wrench into the access holes
(see arrows at right) and tighten both set screws. Do not overtighten, they
simply need to be firmly tight.
D. Now use your M3 Allen and M8 open-end wrench to fully tighten each of the long screws and nuts the run through the U-clamps and mounting blocks. Once they are all tight (8 of them total) then your fork clamp installation is complete. You can now use them to attach the windshield with quick-release adjustable brackets.
Windshield Installation
- Pre-install the Truss screws & washers into the windshield holes as shown in the image below.
- Once all four of the screws are in place, gently guide the screws into the Well Nuts in the brackets until all four are set.
- Hand tighten the Truss screws until they swell up behind the bracket and are firmly holding the windshield.
Adjustment Knobs
To adjust the windshield for height and/or angle you must loosen the knobs one
turn lets you adjust height, 3-4 turns releases the angle adjustment. Gently
push or pull on the shield to position it where you want it then tighten the
knobs down snugly, making sure the tapered shoulder on the inside of the
knobs are engaged in the scalloped slot to prevent them from moving out of
adjustment.
We recommend setting the shield angle at about the same angle as the forks on
the bike. Usually this is the middle of our angle adjustment range. Set the
height so that it is about 2 inches below your line of sight. Make sure the
adjustment knobs are secure, then take the bike out and test.
You may want to change the angle a little or change the height – this is very
much a trial and error type of experiment. Be sure to pull over and stop
before making adjustments. Different weather conditions and different speeds
will help in determining what works best for you.
