Product Information
Specifications
- Compatible with: Harley-Davidson Road Glide (2015+)
- Material: Black acrylic adapter plate, metal brackets, screws, washers
- Includes: Set of preassembled Robo Knob brackets, acrylic adapter plate, mounting screws, washers, lock nuts, rubber washers
What is in the box
- Set of preassembled Robo Knob brackets (1) Black acrylic adapter plate
- M6 x 16mm mounting screws
- M6 flat washers
- M6 lock nuts
- M5 x 25 Phillips truss screws
- M5 black plastic washers
- 1/8” thick rubber washers
You will need to remove your factory windshield; it is not adaptable for use
with these brackets. However you will be using the factory windshield screws
and the trim strips to bolt our system onto your bike.
Using a 1/8” Allen wrench, remove the four screws and chrome trim strips that
are holding your windshield on. Gently pull the stock shield off of the rubber
gasket that it is sitting on. Do not remove the rubber gasket; it will be used
with the MadStad system.
Product Usage Instructions
Step 1: Install the Brackets onto the Base Shield
- Attach the Robo Knob brackets to the black acrylic adapter plate using the provided M6 x 16 screws, flat washers, and lock nuts. Do not over-tighten.
Step 2: Base Shield Installation
- Position the MadStad base shield against the black rubber gasket on your Road Glide fairing.
- Place the stock chrome trim strips over the mounting holes.
- Secure the shield in place by running the factory mounting screws into the fairing using a hand Allen wrench or driver. Do not use a power drill.
Step 3: Windshield Installation
- Pre-install the Truss screws & washers into the windshield holes as shown in the image below.
- Once all four of the screws are in place, gently guide the screws into the Well Nuts in the brackets until all four are set.
- Hand tighten the Truss screws until they swell up behind the bracket and are firmly holding the windshield.
Adjusting the MadStad Brackets
- Before riding, ensure that the knob screws on the brackets are securely tightened.
- Do not attempt to adjust the brackets while riding. Come to a complete stop before making adjustments.
- Avoid setting the windshield in a way that may cause interference with handlebars or hand guards during turning.
- To adjust the windshield position, stop the motorcycle out of traffic, loosen the knob screws, tilt or adjust the windshield, and then re-tighten before riding again.
The knob screws release the brackets allowing the windshield to slide and
tilt. These knob screws must always be tightened securely before riding. DO
NOT attempt to adjust the brackets while riding! You must come to a complete
stop before making adjustments. Also make sure that you do not set the
windshield in such a way that causes your handlebars or hand guards (if
installed) to hit the windshield when turning, or before reaching full lock.
To make adjustments, loosen the knobs for 1-2 turns and set the windshield so
the top edge is at about your chin level as you look straight ahead while
seated on the bike. Set the angle at approximately 60 degrees. (Use the angle
guide on the back page of this manual as a guide.) Tighten the knobs and go
for a ride to see if you now have smooth airflow over and around your helmet.
Do this on a calm day if at all possible; windy days make it hard to judge the
airflow. Don’t ever try to adjust the mount while in motion.
WARNING: If you tilt the shield fully backward, it may make contact with
the top edge of the brackets. This could scratch the back of your shield, so
please check to make sure there is no contact.
To try a different windshield position, bring the motorcycle to a complete
stop and out of traffic. Loosen the two knob screws and tilt the windshield
forward or back 2-3 degrees or so, and/or adjust it up or down if necessary.
Re-tighten the knobs and go for another ride.
Pivot Screws Adjustment
- The MadStad mount has pivot screws on each set of brackets near the center of the bottom bracket.
- Check and adjust the tension of the pivot screws if necessary to maintain proper movement of the brackets.
Notes on Windshield Angle
For optimal performance, set the windshield at a 55-60 degree angle or parallel to the base shield at 50 degrees. Refer to the angle guide provided in the manual for reference.
Most windshields work best when set at a 55-60 degree angle. You may find
better results by angling the shield parallel to the base shield which is at
50 degrees. We have provided an angle guide on the back page of this manual so
that you can check and see if your shield is set somewhere in this range.
To check your shield angle, your bike should be in an upright position either
on a center stand or held up by a helper. Set the spine (folded edge) of the
manual against the front of the shield. If the large arrow marked 60° is
pointing straight up, then your shield is at a 60-degree angle. (See diagram
on Page 5.) Anywhere close to this setting is fine for your initial test ride.
You may set the shield back more when riding solo, or push it to a more
vertical with a passenger (to bump the air up a little higher).
There are free smartphone apps that turn your phone into an angle finder
(inclinometer) or you can purchase mechanical angle finders at your local
hardware store, but these things are not a requirement. Most riders can find
their sweet spot through simple trial and error.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Can I use my factory windshield with these brackets?
A: No, the factory windshield is not adaptable for use with these brackets. You will need to use the provided base shield and hardware for installation.
Q: How do I prevent scratching on the back of the shield?
A: Ensure that there is no contact between the shield and the top edge of the brackets when tilting fully backward. Check for clearance before making adjustments.
