CHILD RESTRAINT IN A MANNER APPROPRIATE FOR YOUR CHILD’S SIZE MAY INCREASE
THE RISK OF SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
5.1 Car Seat Use Modes
This Car Seat has three different use modes for the weight and height ranges
listed above and depends on the size of your child. Instructions for the
proper use of this child restraint differ greatly for each use mode. Be sure
you are using the child restraint in
the correct mode and with the correct features for your child as identified in
this owner’s manual.
- Toddler Car Seat (WITH Built-in Harness System) 22 – 50 lbs. (10 – 23 kg)
- High-back Booster Car Seat (WITHOUT Harness System) 40 – 100 lbs. (18 – 45 kg)
- Backless Booster Car Seat (WITHOUT Harness System and Back Support) 40 – 100 lbs. (18 – 45 kg)

- Top of child’s shoulders are at or below top harness slots.
Baby Trend and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend using a Car Seat
WITH Built-in Harness as long as possible before changing to a Booster Car
Seat.
The Toddler Car Seat mode should be used until the child exceeds either 50
lbs. (23 kg), 48 in. (122 cm), or shoulders are above top harness slots.
Note: If child’s shoulders are above the top harness slots, child is too
large to use build-in harness system. Discontinue use of Body Insert when

comfortably under the side wings of the Head Support.
Parents are advised that the Back Support and Head Support of the High-back

OF VEHICLE SEAT BACK OR VEHICLE HEADREST.
Selecting a Vehicle Seating Location
WARNING
There are many different types of vehicles, vehicle seat belt systems, or
other occupant restraint systems in use today. Accordingly, this manual can
only give guidelines for proper installation in your vehicle. In addition to
this manual, you must also read and understand the vehicle owner’s manual,
which should address use of child restraints. f your vehicle owner’s manual
does not address the installation of child restraints, please contact your
local vehicle dealer, or the vehicle’s manufacturer to obtain this information
before using this Car Seat.
Not every seating location within a vehicle may be safe for the installation
of this Car Seat. In fact, some vehicles have no seating location that is safe
for the installation of a Car Seat.
Improper placement of this Car Seat within a vehicle will increase the risk of
death or serious injury in a sudden stop or crash. See “Vehicle Seat Belts”
section for more information on vehicle seat belts.
Please follow the instructions in this manual and in your vehicle owner’s
manual carefully to ensure proper location and installation of this Car Seat.
If you are uncertain about the proper location of the Car Seat within the
vehicle, contact your vehicle manufacturer directly or through their dealer
before using this seat. For additional information or assistance contact Baby
Trend® at 1-800-328-7363.
6.1 Overall Considerations for Selecting Seating Location
-
Please review your vehicle owner’s manual to determine the best location for each Car Seat use mode, any specific instructions for Car Seatinstallation, or to determine if any locations are unsafe for Car Seat installation.
If you do not have the vehicle owner’s manual or the owner’s manual does not address child car seat installation, please contact the vehicle manufacturer to obtain this information before using the Car Seat. -
Use rear vehicle seating position whenever possible. According to accident statistics, children are safer when properly restrained in rear vehicle seating positions, rather than front seating positions. Whenever possible, this Car Seat should be secured in the rear center, seating position. The rear center position sometimes is equipped with a vehicle lap belt only and CANNOT be used when this Car Seat is used as a booster seat WITHOUT the Built-in Safety Harness.
-
Only use a vehicle front seating location if specifically allowed in vehicle owner’s manual and following all instructions in the vehicle owner’s manual.
-
Use a vehicle seating location that has a tether anchor whenever possible.
Installation with Top Tether is Recommended.
a. Baby Trend requires using the Top Tether provided with this car seat whenever possible. Installation of a car seat using the Top Tether can make getting a secure installa- tion easier and can reduce the risk of injury in a crash.
b. The car seat may be installed without the Top Tether when a vehicle tether anchor is not available.
Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) System is designed to make
installation of child car seats easier by requiring child restraints to be
installed without using the vehicle’s seat belt system. Since September 1,
2002, at least two rear seating positions of all cars, mini vans and light
trucks come equipped with lower child restraint anchor points located between
a vehicle’s seat cushion and seat back. These vehicles are also equipped with
at least 3 top tether anchorages located behind the vehicle seat. Together,
the lower anchors and top tether make up the LATCH system. All child
restraints manufactured since September 1, 2002 have lower anchor and top
tether attachments which will connect to the vehicle’s LATCH System.
Read your vehicle owner’s manual for exact locations, identifi- cation and
requirements for use with a child restraint.
ONLY use LATCH to secure your car seat in a seating position recommended by
the vehicle manufacturer for LATCH installation. Refer to the vehicle owner’s
manual for the vehicle’s top tether anchor locations. Vehicle anchorages
should be identified by one of the following symbols. The Hybrid 3-in-1 Toddler Car
Seat (WITH Harness) can be used with the LATCH system to the maximum weight
for harness use – 50 lbs. * (23 kg).
The Hybrid 3-in-1 Booster Car Seat (WITHOUT Harness) may be secured with LATCH
in the High-back Booster use mode to 100 lbs. (45 kg).”
- IMPORTANT: Some vehicle manufacturers have lower weight rating for LATCH lower anchors when used with Toddler Car Seat. Consult your vehicle owner’s manual or contact the vehicle manufacturer for limits on your vehicle’s LATCH lower anchors.
Vehicle Top Tether Anchor Points LATCH Lower Anchor
6.2 Seating Locations to Avoid
DO NOT use this Car Seat in the following seating locations.
-
Never use this Car Seat in a vehicle seating location that has an Active Frontal Air Bag unless recommended in the vehicle owner’s manual. If your vehicle is equipped with a front passenger Air Bag, please refer to the vehicle’s owner’s manual for additional
information about Air Bags and child safety seat installation. -
DO NOT use this Car Seat in any vehicle seat that faces to the rear of the vehicle.
-
DO NOT use this Car Seat in any vehicle seat that faces to the side of the vehicle.
-
DO NOT use the Car Seat in a vehicle seating location that has a vehicle seat back that does not lock in position. A vehicle seat back that folds forward must lock to prevent it from moving forward in a sudden stop or crash.

Vehicle Seat Belts
9.1 Check that the Vehicle Seat Belt is Safe to Use
Toddler Car Seat use (WITH Build-in Harness)
The Car Seat must be tightly secured at all times. The vehicle seat belt must
be capable of maintaining tight installation at all times.
Avariety of vehicles have been equipped with vehicle seat belt systems that
are not safe for use with the Car Seat. These systems may look safe but their
method of operation precludes their use with the Car Seat. If you are unsure
if the vehicle seat belt is safe for use with the Car Seat, please contact the
vehicle manufacturer for additional information
WARNING
Carefully analyze the operation of the vehicle seaf belts before using the Car
Seat. Being able to thread the vehicle seat belt through the Car Seat is not
an indication that the vehicle seat belt is safe to use.
Carefully read this section on vehicle seat belt systems, review your vehicle
owner’s manual in detail, and heed any and all warning labels on your
vehicle’s seat belt. Your vehicle may require a modification or special seat
belt in order to be safely used with this Car Seat. Please see your vehicle
dealer for this service Toddler Car Seat use (WITHOUT Build-in Harness) The
vehicle seat belt must be able to be properly positioned on child and snugly
adjusted around child’s hips and onto shoulder.
Safe Seat Belt Systems:
The following vehicle seat belt systems can be used with the Car Seat provided
that all of the other requirements prescribed in these instructions, including
seat position, and all instructions provided by your vehicle’s owner’s manual
are followed
For both Toddler Use or Booster Use Mode:
Combination lap/shoulder belt with locking latch plate
- A vehicle lap/shoulder combination seat belt with a latch plate that locks the lap belt into position is suitable for use with the Car Seat. Once this type of seat belt is fastened, the latch plate prevents — Ejgs the lap belt from loosening. This combination seat belt does not require a belt lock-off.
Combination lap/shoulder belt with sliding latch plate
- A vehicle lap/shoulder combination seat belt system with a latch plate that can slide freely along the belt is suitable for use with the Car Seat if it includes a lockable retractor. Please refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual for additional information on locking this style of seat belt. This style of belt must be locked to prevent movement of the Car SeatContact Baby Trend Customer Service Department to obtain a belt lock-off if needed .
Combination Lap/Shoulder Belt with sliding LATCH plate (continued)
Please refer to your vehicle owner’s manual for additional information on
locking this style of seat belt.
This style of belt MUST be locked to prevent movement of car seat.
For Toddler Use Mode WITH Harness:
Lap Belts (manually Adjusted)
- A vehicle lap belt that is manually adjusted and will remain tight while the vehicle is in motion is suitable for use with the Car Seat. Pulling the belt through the buckle after the buckle is fastened tightens this type of seat belt. The vehicle center rear seat belt is most often this type of vehicle seat belt.
Lap Belts with Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR)
- A vehicle lap belt that stays tightly adjusted around the car seat and cannot be lengthened once it is fastened is suitable for use with the Car Seat. These seat belts often have an automatic locking retractor that will allow the belt to be lengthened but once fastened, must be unbuckled and allowed to retract fully before allowing the belt to be lengthened again.
Unsafe Seat Belt Systems:
DO NOT use the following types of vehicle seat belt systems with the Car Seat.
These vehicle seat belt systems will not hold the Car Seat securely in place
at all times. The addition of a locking clip will not make these vehicle seat
belt systems safe to use.
Note: Latch can be used in place of the following unsafe vehicle seat belt
systems if your vehicle is equipped with latch anchorage system.
Lap Belt With Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR):
DO NOT use a vehicle lap belt that stays loose or does not stay tightly
adjusted after installed and locks only in a crash or sudden stop. These lap
belts utilize an Emergency Locking Retractor and are often found in
combination with motorized shoulder belts. Because these belts will allow the
Car Seat to move about on the vehicle seat, the chance of the Car Seat being
out of the proper position in a crash is very high.
Accordingly, DO NOT use the Car Seat with this type of Vehicle Seat Belt
system. Please see your vehicle’s dealer or owner’s manual for information on
converting this vehicle seat belt system to one that is acceptable for use
with a Car Seat.
Combination Lap/Shoulder Belt With Retractor:
DO NOT use a vehicle lap/shoulder belt system if the lap belt and shoulder
belt each have retractors at one end. This type of vehicle seat belt system
will NOT adequately restrain the Car Seat. Passive Restraint – Lap or
Shoulder Belt Mounted on Door:
DO NOT use a vehicle seat belt that is connected to the vehicle door in any
way. These types of seat belts are designed to automatically surround the
occupant when the door is closed. This type of vehicle seat belt will NOT
adequately restrain the Car Seat.
Lap Belts Located Forward of Seat Crease:
DO NOT use a vehicle seat belt that is anchored on the vehicle seat more than
2 inches forward of the crease between the seat bottom and the seat back. This
type of vehicle seat belt anchors the Car Seat too far forward and the Car
Seat will NOT be safely restrained in the vehicle.
Passive Restraint – Lap Belt with Motorized Shoulder Belt:
DO NOT use a vehicle shoulder belt that oves along a track. These systems
typically move to surround the occupant when the door is closed. This type of
vehicle belt system will NOT adequately restrain the Car Seat. If you have any
of the above vehicle seat belt systems, DO NOT use it to secure the Car Seat
in the vehicle.
Look in the vehicle for a location that has a more suitable vehicle seat belt
system as described in the “Vehicle seat belt Systems that are Adequate for
installation of Car Seat” section.
You may also contact your vehicle’s manufacturer to inquire about installing a
seat belt system that is adequate to restrain a Car Seat.
