Installation Instructions

Preparation

Tower and boat Wiring (not included)

  • For safety, turn off the audio system and battery switch prior to beginning installation. If your vessel does not have a battery switch, simply disconnect the positive lead from the battery terminal.
  • Use extreme caution before cutting and drilling holes to avoid damaging fuel lines, hydraulic lines, or existing electrical components.
  • Avoid running wires near sharp-edged surfaces. Never run wires exposed on the deck, protecting the wires with a cover offers the best protection from marine elements. If wires must be routed through metal or fiberglass walls, use rubber grommets to protect the wire.
  • Roswell recommends using 16 gauge wire for the audio connections and 18 gauge wire for the 12-volt LED connections.
  • You will need to supply a length of positive and negative 16 gauge speaker wire to run from your speaker mounting locations to your amp or head unit. Connections to either an amp or head unit are your responsibility to provide.

12-Volt LED Wire (not included)

  • Note: Consider how you would like to use the integrated RGB LED before you begin the installation. It can either be hard-wired to one of 7 different colors or you may purchase an LED controller to allow any combination of colors and patterns (see next page for details).
  • If you are hard-wiring the RGB LED’s on these speakers, you will need (1) 18 gauge power and (1) 18 gauge ground wire from the speaker mounting locations to your power source.
  • If you are using an RGB LED controller, you will need to run (1) 18 gauge power and (3) 18 gauge ground wires from the speaker mounting locations to your LED controller. Refer to the RGB LED controller instructions for further information.

Positioning

  • We suggest mounting your speakers on the rear crossbar of your tower facing backward. Many people position them further to the sides of the tower to have more headroom when moving around inside the boat.

Wire Routing

  • Consider how you will route your wires before you begin your installation. It is generally best to keep audio and power wires separate whenever possible. In towboats, wiring for tower speakers is typically done along the port side as your boat’s battery is easily accessible and the observers/judges seat storage area offers more space for your amp.
  • Because each boat and tower setup is different, there are no specific instructions for wiring the tower – generally, most people will run the wires internally through their tower. To do this you will need to drill a series of holes that will allow you to run the wiring harness inside the tower to your desired mounting location.
  • You can then fish the wires through the tower using a fish tape or pull wire. Alternatively, some people choose to run their wires outside the tower using zip ties or another attachment system. The choice is yours.
  • All wiring should be done by a qualified marine technician.

Tubing Size

  • These speakers include three different inserts for the tubing clamp: 3.00′; 2.375″ and 1.90”. If your tower requires a clamp insert not provided please contact Roswell at 1 (321 )-638-1331 for optional inserts. Alternative sizes available are: 2.85′; 2.50″ and 2.25″

WARNING

  • These speakers are capable of easily producing sound pressure levels (SPL) in excess of 100 dB, even in an open-air environment like a boat. Sound pressures at or above these levels can easily cause permanent hearing damage or loss. Be sure to use safe listening practices and protect your ears.

Wiring options for RGB LEDs

Before starting assembly you will need to consider the LED configuration you would like to use. You can wire the RGB LEDs in your speakers to be either one fixed color, or your can wire them to be used with the Roswell RGB Controller {Part Num. C920-1620). Connecting the wires on the speaker wiring harness in different configurations will produce different colors. See the table below to select your color if you are not using the RGB Controller. If using the RGB controller you will need to run a total of four wires to connect to the controller in the boat’s hull, which means even if you have a pre-wired tower it is very likely you will need to add wires to your tower.

  • Remove the plugs to access the wires. Carefully pull the wires out of the tower.

Note: Aviator is not pre-wired for RGB controller

  • Carefully cut the first piece of shrink wrap with a utility knife to expose all of the wires and remove the plug. Be very cautious not to cut through the wire’s insulation.
  1. Use wire strippers to expose 1 /4″ of wire on all wires.
  2. Connect the tower wires to the speaker wiring harness according to the LED configuration you plan to use.
  3. Heat shrink the connectors.
  4. Carefully push the wires back into the tubing.
  • Determine your mounting location on your tower. If you are mounting the speakers so they face directly rearwards or perpendicular to whatever tube they are clamped to please skip ahead to step I.
  • If your mounting location requires a rotated clamping position proceed to step E.

To access the bolts that hold the clamp in place you must first remove the speaker. Remove the rear bolt, slide the speaker out of the can and then unplug the wiring harness. Set the speaker aside somewhere safe where it won’t get knocked over or scratched.

  1. Remove the two 3/8n-16 bolts from the clamp top.
  2. Remove the two plastic clamp inserts from the clamp.
  3. Remove the four 3/8″-16 bolts from inside the speaker can.

  1. Rotate the clamp body to the angle required for your installation.
  2. Re-install the 3/8″-16 bolts through the internal spacer, can, outer spacer, and plastic spacer, and into the clamp angle insert with red thread lock and tighten to 25ft-lbs.

Re-install the speaker assembly. First plug in the wiring harness, place the speaker in the can being mindful to align the slot at the top of the speaker assembly with the alignment pin in the can. Then install the countersunk 3/8″-16 screw with red threadlock. Tighten to 25ft-lbs.

  1. Loop the safety lanyard over the tower next to the speaker clamp and feed one end of the lanyard through the other end.
  2. Insert the screw through the washer and lanyard loop.
  3. Using a Phillips head screwdriver, securely attach the lanyard to the small hole on the speaker between the Deutsch connector and the base of the clamp. Do not overtighten.

ROSWELL-R1-6-5-Inch-Tower-Speakers-FIG-17

  1. Plug in both speakers.

Double check clearance with any tower accessories, board racks, tower folding. etc before completing this step

Install the 5/8″-11 clamp set screws with red thread lock to secure the clamps into place. 3″tubes use the 1 /2″ long set screw. Tubes smaller than 3.0″ use the 1 3/1 6″ long set screw.

Note: This set screw will leave a mark on your tower when it is tightened.

Recommended Cross-Over Settings

With Subwoofer: 90-100Hz depending on listening preferences
Without Subwoofer: 70-80Hz depending on listening preferences

The gain setting will be dependent on the output voltage of the head unit and the RMS power of the amplifier used. Be careful when setting the amplifier and during listening sessions; burnt voice coils are not covered under warranty.

Use & Care

These speakers are built to the highest standards of marine durability. However, they are still sensitive piece of electronic equipment. When cleaning, avoid hosing down the speakers directly, and do not use harsh cleaners on the R1s as they could damage the finish. Simply wiping the speaker down with a damp cloth should be sufficient to ensure years of enjoyment It is necessary to regularly check the tightness of the bolts securing the R1 speaker to your tower. Bolts and screws tend to ratte loose over time due to the vibrations and shaking that your boat experiences while on the water or in transit. Covering your speakers with something removable like saran wrap or aftermarket fabric covers during transit or storage can save you a lot of time cleaning and also protect your speakers from damage.
