Intended use

The Hach DR1300 FL is intended for use by water treatment professionals who need to make sure that there is a consistently-low level of free and total chlorine in process water. The DR1300 FL is used to monitor free and total chlorine levels to prevent damage to product quality and prevent equipment damage caused by chlorine.
In addition, the DR1300 FL is intended for use by water treatment professionals who use sodium bisulfite for dichlorination. The DR1300 FL is used to monitor sulfite at the end of the dichlorination process to make sure that the dichlorination process is efficient.

To do a diagnostic test, select SYSTEM > Diagnosis with the sample port cover closed. Supply the diagnostic data to technical support for analysis

Problem Possible cause Solution
The instrument will not come on. The batteries are not installed in the

correct orientation.

The battery power level is low.

| Make sure the battery orientation is correct.

Replace the batteries if the battery power level is low. Use only non- rechargeable batteries.

The chlorine readings are low.| The sample containers, sample vials, caps and other items that touched the sample have a chlorine demand.| Collect samples in clean glass bottles. Do not use plastic containers. Plastic containers can have a large chlorine demand.

Pretreat items that the sample may touch to remove chlorine demand. Refer to the instructions in the Sample Collection section of the test procedure.

The chlorine readings are low.| The sample was not analyzed immediately.| Analyze the samples immediately. Chlorine is a strong oxidizing agent and is unstable in natural waters.
The total chlorine readings are high or low.| The reagents were added in an incorrect sequence.| Make sure that the reagents are added to the sample vial in the sequence given in the test procedure.
The readings are low.| The reagent blank value is not correct or missing.| Make sure to do a reagent blank calibration before a set of new reagent bottles is used. Refer to Do a reagent blank calibration

If the problem continues, do a calibration check. Refer to Do a calibration check on page 17.

The readings are low.| The reagent bottle was not closed immediately after use. The solvent in the reagent evaporated or the reagent was contaminated.| Discard the set of reagent bottles. Use a new set of reagent bottles. Do a reagent blank calibration. Refer to Do a reagent blank calibration

Close the reagent bottles immediately after use.

The readings are low.| The quantity of reagent added was not correct. The reagent was not correctly dispensed.| Hold the reagent bottle vertically above the sample vial when reagent is added.

Note: If the reagent bottle is horizontal when drops are added, the quantity of reagent added will change.

The readings are low.| The reagents are no longer good.| Discard the set of reagent bottles. Use a new set of reagent bottles. Do a reagent blank calibration. Refer to Do a reagent blank calibration

Keep the new reagents bottles out of direct sunlight or indoor UV illumination. UV light causes damage to the reagents. When not in use, keep the reagent bottles in the dark.

The readings are low.| The sample port is dirty.| Clean the sample port. Refer to Clean the sample port on page 21.
The readings are low.| The sample vials are dirty or have scratches.| Clean the sample vials if dirty. Replace the sample vials if the sample vials have scratches.
The readings are low.| The wrong parameter was selected.| Make sure to select the correct parameter (e.g., free chlorine) and use the correct reagents for the parameter.
The readings are low.| The reagents have expired.| Discard the set of reagent bottles. Use a new set of reagent bottles. Do a reagent blank calibration. Refer to Do a reagent blank calibration
The readings are high.| The reagent blank value is not correct or missing.| Make sure to do a reagent blank calibration before a set of new reagent bottles is used. Refer to Do a reagent blank calibration

If the problem continues, do a calibration check. Refer to Do a calibration check on page 17.

The readings are high.| The sample vials are dirty or have scratches.| Clean the sample vials if dirty. Replace the sample vials if the sample vials have scratches.
The readings are high.| The wrong parameter was selected.| Make sure to select the correct parameter (e.g., free chlorine) and use the correct reagents for the parameter.
Unexpected readings| The sample is not a clean water sample.| The DR1300 FL is intended for use with clean water samples.
The instrument reading is different from the online analyzer reading.| The sample is not a representative sample and is not well mixed.| Make sure to get a representative sample. Refer to the instructions in the Sample Collection section of the test procedure.
The instrument reading is different from the online analyzer reading.| The grab sample was not analyzed immediately.

Note: The DPD method is less accurate in the lower ppb range compared to the fluorescence method.
Other oxidants do not interfere with the fluorescence method.

| Analyze the grab samples immediately. The chlorine concentration decreases quickly in ultra low range chlorine samples.
