Product Information

The product being referred to in the user manual is the BX1128 baseplate. It is designed for installation on the following vehicles:

  • 2011-2013 Dodge Durango
  • 2011-2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee (excluding L or WL models)
  • 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee WK (excluding L or WL models)

The baseplate is compatible with vehicles that include Trail Rated and Adaptive Cruise Control features. The user manual provides important instructions and warnings for the installation and operation of the baseplate. It is crucial to read and follow these instructions to avoid property damage, loss of the towed vehicle, personal injury, or death. The manual also provides torque specifications for both inch and metric bolts that are required for installation. It lists the recommended tools for the installation process, including a large vise grip, flat screwdriver, utility knife, torque wrench, drill, and plastic pop rivet gun.

Product Usage Instructions

  1.  Before beginning the installation process, visit www.blueox.com to ensure you have the latest version of the installation instructions.
  2. Carefully read both the Installation Instructions specific to your vehicle model and the General Instructions provided in the user manual.

  4. Check if the front of your vehicle matches the one shown in the manual. If it looks different, contact Blue Ox at (402)385-3051 for assistance.
  5. Refer to your vehicle owner’s manual to determine the manufacturer’s towing specifications.
  6. Gather all the required tools mentioned in the manual.
  7. Remove the fascia, plastic shielding, and windshield washer fluid reservoir according to the instructions provided. These will be reinstalled later.
  8. If your vehicle is equipped with tow hooks, remove them for baseplate installation and do not reinstall them.

  1. Blue Ox® towing products and accessories are intended to be installed by Blue Ox® Dealers who are familiar with our products and have the equipment and knowledge necessary to do “fit work”. If needed, Blue Ox® Dealers can be found at www.blueox.com or by contacting our Technical Service Department at 402-385-3051.
  2. Many Blue Ox® baseplates are designed to use existing holes and hardware to mount the baseplate to the towed vehicle. Even though bolts are there, do not assume they are adequate for baseplate mounting. Always use the hardware supplied in the hardware kit and existing hardware as specified in the installation instructions.

WARNING Failure to read and follow these instructions could result in separation of the towed vehicle from the tow bar, causing property damage, loss of towed vehicle, personal injury or death.
Reference your vehicle owner’s manual for manufacturer’s towing specifications.

NOTICE

  • Handling of some cosmetic parts when installing this product may require the use of protective covers, rags, specialty tools, etc. to prevent damage.
  • When using power drills be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length.
  • When using a reciprocating saw be aware of objects behind the cutting surface.
  • Use good quality paint to spray cut the edges of the frame to prevent rusting.
  • Be sure that ALL electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia.

  11. Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The photo shows the recommended installation of the cables to the frame of the vehicle. Additional options may interfere with suggested mounting; in this case, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the General Information sheet. Be sure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Do this on BOTH sides of the vehicle.

  12. Loosely reinstall the compressor, checking for clearance around the baseplate. If needed shim the compressor away from the baseplate with 5/16” washers. This with keep the compressor from vibrating against the baseplate.

  13. Reinstall the washer fluid reservoir andplastic shielding.

  14. Optional Breakaway: Measure over approximately 7” from the convenience link or in the desired location, and install the bracket to the bumper with a #10-16 x 1” self-drilling screw. Attach the breakaway to the bracket with a 1/4”-20 x 3/4” bolt and 1/4”-20 lock nut.

  15. Install the electrical bracket to the fascia at the desired location and bend to the desired angle. With a 1/4” drill bit drill out the two (2) mounting holes through the fascia and attach the bracket to the fascia with 1/4”-20 x 3/4” bolts and 1/4”-20 lock nuts.

Note : Summit/High Altitude models have a different style of fascia with no tow hook pockets on the fascia. Notice To Baseplate Installer

  1. It is YOUR responsibility to watch for:
    • Oil cooler and air conditioner lines
    • Electrical wires and hoses
    • Missing parts or attaching points on the frame
** If the baseplate is improperly installed and is against a wire or hose, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts sometime after the actual baseplate installation.

Permanent Baseplate Safety Cable Installation

  • Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The principle function of the permanent baseplate safety cables is to prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose in the event the connection between the frame of the towed vehicle and the baseplate fails or becomes disconnected. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle’s frame. The illustrations below show the possible arrangements recommended by Blue Ox®. Each permanent baseplate safety cable must have an adequate weight rating for the towing system. The weight rating of the two (2) cables together will not qualify.
    • Do not mount the permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses or brake lines.
  • These permanent baseplate safety cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed on the vehicle. Permanent baseplate safety cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT a replacement for legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
