Water and Moisture
- The apparatus should be protected from moisture and rain and can not be used near water; for example near a bathtub, a kitchen sink, a swimming pool, etc.
Heat
- The apparatus should be located away from heat sources such as radiators, stoves or other appliances that produce heat.
Ventilation

Connections Safety
- Check for the correct mains voltage and condition of IEC lead before connecting to power outlet.

Power Cord and Plug
- In case of external power cord, protect it from being walked on or pinched partic-ularly at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the apparatus.
- Please disconnect the device from power source by pulling the plug other than the power cord.
- Pulling the power cord may result in damages. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized or grounding-type plug. A polarized plug has two poles; a grounding type plug has two poles and a third grounding terminal.
- The third prong is provided for your safety. If the provided plug does not fit into your outlet, refer to an electrician for replacement.
Power Supply
- In case of products with external power adapter, the unit should be connected to power adapters only of the type as marked on the apparatus or described in the manual.
- Failure to do so could result in damage to the product and possibly the user.
- Unplug this apparatus during lightning storms or when unused for long periods.
Fuse
- In case of products with external fuse holder, in order to prevent the risk of fire and damaging the unit, please use only of the recommended fuse type as de-scribed in the manual.
- Before replacing the fuse, make sure the unit turned off and disconnected from the AC outlet.
Positioning
- Please disconnect the device from power source before relocating the device.
- To avoid deformation of panels and damages to internal components, please do NOT place the device where there is heavy dust or violent vibration, or where it is extremely cold or hot.

Electrical Connection
- Please disconnect other equipment from power source before they are connected to this product. Please turn volume to its minimum level before the device is pow-ered ON or OFF.

Precautions in Operation and Cleaning
- Please do NOT insert any finger into any gap or opening of the device. Also pre-vent foreign objects (paper, plastics or metal etc.) from being inserted or falling into any gap or opening of the device.
- In such case, please cut off power source immediately.

GETTING STARTED
Unpacking
- Thank you for purchasing your HMX-44 Play Matrix with Multi Player. All units have been rigorously tested before leaving the factory.
- This product is widely used in schools, shops, bars, pubs, shopping malls and other places: it is the ideal choice for public broadcasting.
- In order to facilitate your installation, commission-ing and use of this product, please read this manual before installation.
- Carefully unpack the carton and check the contents to ensure that all parts are present and in good conditions:

- If anything got damaged during transport, notify the shipper immediately and keep packing material for inspection. Again, please save its carton and all packing materials. If the unit must be returned to the manufacturer, it is important that the unit is returned in the original manufacturer’s packing. Please do not take any action without first contacting us.

First Start-Up
- When starting up the matrix for the first time, please proceed as follows:
- Turn down the attenuator of each zone.
- Connect the matrix to a power source. Turn on the power switch. The power indicator will light.
- Adjust the zone volume on the matrix until you reach the volume you want. If you need to change the wiring or installation, make sure to disconnect the power line of the equipment first.
- Adjust volumes source levels according to your needs, and finally adjust again zone levels once reached the desired levels.
Phantom Power
Turn on the Phantom Power Switch on the desired input in case of condenser
microphone. Please read the specifications of your condenser microphone and
make sure it requires +48V Phantom Power. It is not recommended to turn on in
normal use.
Warning: if it needs a power supply of less than 48V do not connect to
your HMX matrix because you risk to damage the microphone.
PRODUCT OVERVIEW
- HELVIA has thought to respond to the main needs of those involved in small-to-medium audio installations offering versatility and compactness in an integrated solution such as the HMX-44.
- This is a little gem that integrates a passive matrix mixer with a 4-input, 4-output mixer and a multimedia player.
- The mixer section provides 3 combo Mic-Line inputs with 48V Phantom, a front mini-jack stereo Line input combined with the multimedia player with DAB+, FM, USB, BT.
- Each input has independent level adjustment, and the 3 combo Mic/Line inputs also possess high and low tone adjustment.
- All 4 inputs are assigned independently to the 4 zones and each zone has an out-put level control.
- The HMX-44 provides connection with HMX-MIC microphone base station via RJ45 connection.
- The station is equipped with alert chimes and allows the 4 zones to be selected independently.

Media Player
- The Media Player section of the matrix. Comprises a BT player, USB player, DAB+ and FM tuner and Aux input. See paragraph “4. Operation” on page 15 for all Media Player functions.
Input Selector of Media Player or Line In
- When this button is pressed it plays audio from any device connected to the RCA (unbalanced) or Euroblock (balanced) Line inputs on the rear panel. When this button is released it plays audio from any chosen Media Player source.
Input Source Zone Assign Button
- When one or multiple of these buttons are pressed, audio from this channel is sent to its chosen zone. Audio from the same source only (media or line) can be sent to multiple zones at the same time.
Input 1 Channel Tone Controls.
- Tone controls provide attenuation of bass and treble response. The flat position is obtained when the knobs are set to middle position. Turn the knob clock wise to raise tone level approximately + ? dB for bass and+ ? dB for treble; turn count-er – clockwise to lower tone level by approximately – ? dB for bass and – ? dB for treble.
Input 1 Zone Assign Buttons
- Zone assign buttons for Mic input 1. Press one or multiple of these buttons to send same audio signal to multiple zones.
Input 2 Channel Tone Controls
- Same as point 4 but for input 2.
Input 2 Zone Assign Buttons
- Zone assign buttons for Mic/Line input 2. Press one or multiple of these buttons to send same audio signal to multiple zones.
Input 3 Channel Tone Controls
- Same as point 4 but for input 3.

Mute (red) or Call (light green) Led indicator of zone1-zone4
- This LEDs light up in red when a 24V trigger voltage is inserted in the Mute contacts on the rear panel (see point”12. 24V Emergency Mute Contacts” on page 13), or in light green when the HMX-MIC Call Station is activated.
Audio Signal (green) and Clip (red) Led indicator of zone1-zone4
- This LEDs light up in green when they detect an audio signal incoming, and indi-cate on which zone the audio is going out to. They light up in red when the input signal is too high.
Power Indicator (red)
- This LED lights up when the unit is switched on.
Input Signal Indicator (green)
- This LED lights up when it detects an audio signal incoming from Media Player sources or Line inputs on the rear panel.
Media Playback or Line Level Control
- This knob adjusts Media playback or Line volume level.
Input 1 Level Control
- This knob adjusts Mic input 1 volume level.
Input 1 Signal Indicator (green)
- This LED lights up when it detects an audio signal incoming from the Mic input 1.

- Same as point 15 but for Mic/Line input 2.

Zones 1-4 Line Level Outputs (Euroblock)
- Each Zone output has a dedicated Euroblock mono output on the rear panel, which can be connected to the Line inputs of active speakers or amplifiers.
Line In Stereo/Mono Input (2 x RCA)
- A stereo or mono unbalanced Line level source can be connected to the auxiliary channel Line In on 2 RCA connectors (e.g. smartphone or laptop).
Line In Balanced Input (Euroblock)
- In addition, an Euroblock Line input is provided for balanced connections. Please pay attention to the polarity of the wires (+=Hot, -=Cold, G=ground).
Input 3 DIP Switches (Mic/Line + Phantom)
- This Mic/Line input has 2 DIP switches: one to set the input level for the correct type of source (Mic or Line), and the other for phantom power to use with condenser microphones. If the source connected is a condenser microphone which requires phantom power, make sure that the phantom is switched on for this channel.
- ATTENTION: Always change these DIP switch settings when the matrix is off. Making any changes when the matrix is powered up may cause loud bangs through the system which can damage your speakers.
Input 3 Mic/Line Input (XLR/Jack)
- This combo is for the use of both XLR and 1/4” Jack balanced/unbalanced Microphone or Line signals. You can connect mixers, DJ consoles, CD players, etc. The input audio signal can be adjusted by using the volume level knob on front panel.
Input 2 DIP Switches (Mic/Line + Phantom)
- Same as point 4 but for input 2.
Input 2 Mic/Line Input (XLR/Jack)
- Same as point 5 but for input 2.
Input 1 DIP Switches (VOX + Phantom)
- Other than the phantom power switch described in point 4, this input has also a VOX priority switch. This switch attenuates any signal in the zones Mic input 1 is on when signal from Mic input 1 is detected, and returns them to normal when Mic input 1 is silent.
Input 1 Mic input (XLR)
- This input is designed as a Page Mic input and accepts Microphone level sources with XLR balanced plugs.
Call Station Input Level Control
- This knob controls the input volume level of the optional 4-zone Call Station.
Call Station Connector (RJ45)
- This connector is used for the optional addition of a 4-zone Call Station, the HMX-MIC. The HMX-MIC Call Station comprises a base unit and a paging microphone.
- Connect the microphone to the XLR input on the top of the base unit. Use a CAT-5 network cable to connect the matrix and carry power to the Call Station.
24V Emergency Mute Contacts
- For buildings with a main emergency alarm panel (for fire alarms etc.), the XMA-44 has Mute contacts on the rear panel, which will mute all audio except for channel 1 when activated by a 24V trigger voltage. This leaves channel 1 active for evacuation announcements in the case of an emergency. The screw terminal plug can be pulled out to make connection easier. 2-core bell wire is appropriate for this.
FM Antenna Connector
- Connect here the DAB+/FM antenna (included). You can also use this plug to connect external antennas and increase the DAB+/FM reception sensitivity.
BT Antenna Connector
- Connect here the BT external antenna (included) to increase the BT sensitivity.
Mains Power Input & Fuse Holder
- Power connector for mains power, combined with fuse holder. Plug the power cord (included) into an AC socket properly configured for your particular model.
- Note: If you happen to lose the AC line-cord, always use a three-pin plug with a ground pin. The wire correspondence is as follows:

- ATTENTION: Always connect the earth! Pay attention to your safety! Before taking into operation for the first time, the installation has to be approved by an expert.
- In case of fuse burn, to prevent the risk of fire and damaging the unit, use only the same type of fuse that is written on the device or check paragraph “5. SPECIFICATIONS” on.
Ground Connection Point
- Connect this terminal to the earthing system for safety reasons and to avoid problems in case of short circuits or malfunctions.

USB Drive Input
- When a USB memory drive is inserted into this USB port press the Source button and choose “USB Player” option on the OLED screen, then press the Play/Pause button “ ” or wait a couple of seconds and the mode will be selected automatically.
- The audio files will start playing and the track time will show on the screen.
- Volume is controlled by the Media playback or Line In level contro knob (point 14 on section “3.3. Front Panel” on), or by pressing and holding the Skip
- Forward/Volume Up or Skip Backward/Volume Down buttons on the front panel.
- Press the Info Button repeatedly and the display will show track number related to your playlist, file extension, artist, song and album name, time and date. Press and hold the Info Button to enter Playmode.
- Once in Playmode press the Play/ Pause button and select one of the four functions:
- Normal – Normal playback
- Repeat All – Repeat all tracks
- Repeat One – Repeat one track
- Random – Random playback
OLED Screen
- OLED screen displays main information about media player status: music source, track number, track lenght, track title, file extension, playback progress, DAB+ and FM frequency, and system settings.
mm Aux Input
- To play sound from this input connect your external device with a TRS 3.5 mm cable then press the Source button and choose “Aux Input” mode. To select this mode press the Play/Pause button “ ”, or wait a couple of seconds for automatic selection. Once selected, the OLED screen will show the time. Press the Info Button “ “ and volume level will be shown. Volume is controlled by the Media playback or Line In level contro knob (point 14 on section “3.3. Front Panel” on or by pressing and holding the
- Skip Forward/Volume Up or Skip Backward/Volume Down buttons on the front panel.
- Please notice that Play/Pause Skip Forward or Skip Backward buttons will not work in this mode. Use the controls on your device to play/pause, skip the songs in your playlist.
Source/System Settings button
- Press this button repeatedly to switch between USB Player, DAB+, FM Tuner, BT Player and Aux Input modes. Press and hold to enter System Settings.
System Settings
- Press and hold the Source button to enter the System Settings.
- Use the Skip Forward and Skip Backward buttons to navigate the menu, and choose between Time, Backlight, Language, Factory Reset and Software Version options.
- Use the Play/Pause button “ ” to enter and edit all of these options, or press the Info Button to go back.
Skip Backward/Volume Down – Skip Forward/Volume Up buttons
- Single short press in USB and BT modes will change currently playing track. Pressing and holding buttons for few seconds will increase or decrease volume level of media player (this does not work in BT mode). In DAB+ or FM mode, use these buttons to change frequency in steps, also to switch radio presets
Play/Pause button
- Play and pause function in USB and BT mode. Hold this button in DAB+ or FM mode in order to start radio station auto scan. Press this button or press and hold in order to toggle between DAB+ or FM frequency auto/manual scanning mode. When navigating menu options, press once for selection. This button does not work in Aux mode.
Info Button
- Pressing repeatedly or pressing and holding this button will give you different functions depending on the mode you are in. Further details are explained in dedicated sections in paragraph ”4.1. Media Player Functions” on page 15 . This button also functions as a “go back” button when navigating menus.
Mute/Power button
- Press this button to mute audio. Hold this button longer in order to turn off/on media player.
BT Mode
- BT Mode allows connection of a smartphone or tablet to the media player section for playback of stored files or streamed digital audio. In order to enable this function, it will be necessary to pair the sending device to the receiver as follows.
Pairing
- Press the Source button and enter “BT” mode on your HMX media player by pressing the Play/Pause button
- Open the BT settings menu on your mobile device and search for “HMX-44”.
- Select “HMX-44” and confirm that it is connected. You should read “Paired” on the OLED display.
- To unpair your device press and hold the Play/Pause button until you read “Unpaired” on the OLED display. To pair again your device Press and hold the Play/Pause button until you read “Paired” on the OLED display.
- Press Play/Pause to start playback.
Controls
- Volume is controlled by the Media playback or Line In level contro knob (point 14 on section “3.3. Front Panel” on), or from your connected mobile device. Play/Pause function is controlled by the Play/Pause button or from your mobile device.
- Use the Skip Forward or Skip Backward buttons, or your mobile device, to skip the songs in your playlist.
FM Tuner Mode
- The FM Tuner function operates in the same way as a standard FM radio and benefits from the connection of an FM antenna to the rear panel “F” type connector.
- Press the Source button and enter “FM Tuner” mode on your HMX media player by pressing Play/Pause button “ ”. It uses the same buttons as other media Player modes but with slightly different functions.
- Volume is controlled by the Media playback or Line In level contro knob (point 14 on section “3.3. Front Panel” on ), or by pressing and holding the Skip
- Forward/Volume Up or Skip Backward/Volume Down buttons on the front panel.
- Use the Skip Forward “ ” or Skip Backward “ ” buttons to navigate the menu options and stations.
Auto Scan
- Press and hold Play/Pause button “ ” to start the auto scanning of all available stations. You will see the number of stations increasing on the bottom right of the OLED display as the receiver goes through the whole range of frequencies.
- Once the scan is completed, the receiver will automatically play the first station found. As you go through the stations you will see the station number, frequency or name change accordingly, as well as Radio Text (when available) on the OLED display. At any moment during listening press and hold Play/Pause button “ ” to start the auto scan again.
- Press repeatedly the Info Button “ “ in order to see information about the station, such as: Radio Text, PTY, Name, Signal (stereo or mono), Time and Date.
Manual Scan
- Press the Play/Pause button “ ” to start scan stations manually.
- Use the Skip Forward “ ” or Skip Backward “ ” buttons to go through the whole range of frequencies and tune in stations.
- Press Play/Pause “ ” at any point during Auto Scan to stop the scanning and continue find stations manually. If you press Play/Pause “ ” again on a random frequency, you will go back to the first station previously encoded automatically, or If you press Play/Pause “ ” on an encoded station, you will start from there.
Scan Settings
- Press and hold the Info Button “ “, select “Scan Settings” from the option menu then press Play/Pause Select “Strong stations only” to scan stations with stronger signal only, or “All stations” to scan all available stations. Press Play/Pause “ ” to choose. Press the Info Button to exit the option menu and scan again.
Audio Settings
- Press and hold the Info Button select “Audio Settings” from the option menu then press Play/Pause “ ”. Choose between “Stereo Allowed” or “Forced Mono” to decide wheter to allow stereo signals, whenever possible, or switch them into mono.
- Note: this setting works for one station at a time only and has to be re-set if the station is changed.
Preset Store
- Select a desired station then press and hold the Info Button when the station is playing. Select “Preset Store” from the option menu then press Play/Pause “ ”. Find an empty slot, or overwrite a stored one, and press Play/Pause “ ” to save the desired station on that slot.
- FM Radio Receiver allows to save 30 presets with selected radio stations.
Preset Recall
- Press and hold the Info Button select “Preset Recall” from the option menu then press Play/Pause “ ”. Navigate through your saved slots and press Play/ Pause “ ” to select the preset previously saved and play it.
DAB+ Mode
- Press the Source button and enter DAB+ mode on your HMX media player. Press the Play/Pause button “ ”, or wait a couple of seconds for automatic selection.
- Volume is controlled by the Media playback or Line In level contro knob (point 14 on section “3.3. Front Panel” on page 9), or by pressing and holding the Skip Forward/Volume Up or Skip Backward/Volume Down buttons on the front panel.
- Use the Skip Forward “ ” or Skip Backward “ ” buttons to navigate the menu options and stations.
Auto Scan
- Press and hold the Play/Pause button “ ” to automatically scan for frequencies that can be received. Once scanned, the first available station starts playing. Station name and Radio Text are shown on the OLED display. As you start browsing, the display shows the number of all available stations and the one you are currently on. Keep browsing until you find the desired station then press Play/Pause “ ” or wait a few seconds for auto-selection.
- Press repeatedly the Info Button “ “ in order to see information about the station, such as: Radio Text, Signal Strength, Radio Category, Current National Network Operator, DAB+ Frequency, Signal Error, Bit Rate, Time and Date.
Manual Tune
- Press and hold the Info Button select “Manual Tune” from the option menu, then press Play/Pause “ ”. Use Skip Forward “ ” or Skip Backward “ ” buttons to browse frequencies in steps, then press Play/Pause “ ” on a chosen frequency.
- The display will show the signal strength as the radio will search for stations at this specific frequency. It will start playing automatically if it receives enough signal.
Full Scan
- If you need to rescan for all available stations press and hold the Info Button select “Full Scan” from the option menu then press Play/Pause
Preset Store
- Select a desired station then press and hold the Info Button when the station is playing. Select “Preset Store” from the option menu and press Play/Pause.
- Find an empty slot, or overwrite a stored one, and press Play/Pause to save the desired station on that slot.
- DAB+ receiver allows to save 30 presets with selected radio stations.
Preset Recall
- Press and hold the Info Button select “Preset Recall” from the option menu then press Play/Pause “ ”. Navigate through your saved slots and press Play/Pause “ ” to select the preset previously saved and play it. Saved station will show a “P” on the display, followed by the preset number.
Prune
- Press and hold the Info Button select “Prune” from the option menu then press Play/Pause Choose “yes” to remove stations that are no longer transmitting or have moved frequency.
DRC
- Press and hold the Info Button select “DRC” from the option menu then press Play/Pause Select between “Off”, “Low” and “High” to choose the level of compression to apply to audio.
Remote Control
Note: CD, SD, Eject and numbers buttons are not used.
