IDEXX Catalyst Dx Chemistry Analyzer

Product Information

The Catalyst SDMA Test is a diagnostic test used for measuring symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) levels in various sample types. It is compatible with the Catalyst One and Catalyst Dx* analyzers. The test provides accurate and reliable results in a short amount of time.

Storage and Handling Requirements
The Catalyst SDMA Test should be stored in a freezer until ready for use. Once at room temperature, the test can be returned to the freezer up to 5 times as long as it remains unopened. If an SDMA test is accidentally refrigerated, it should be discarded.

Compatible Sample Types
The SDMA test can run on serum, lithium heparin plasma, and whole blood using the Catalyst Lithium Heparin Whole Blood Separator. Frozen samples should not be used when running the Catalyst SDMA Test.

Validation and Numerical Results
The SDMA test has been validated for various species, but specific numerical results are not mentioned in the user manual.

Running with Other Slides
The SDMA test can be run alone or with other slides as part of a comprehensive patient profile. For example, it can be run alongsidethe Catalyst Lyte 4 CLIP, Catalyst Chem 17 CLIP, and Catalyst TotalT4 Test using one patient sample. There is no specific order in which the SDMA test needs to be loaded when running with other slides.

Run Time
The SDMA test provides results approximately 8 minutes after the start of the run.

Dilution and Sample Handling
IDEXX does not support the use of diluted samples when running the Catalyst SDMA Test. Samples should be handled according to the instructions provided.

Quality Control
To monitor the performance of the SDMA test, IDEXX recommends using the VetTrol Control. Additionally, monthly analyzer maintenance is recommended to ensure the accuracy of the Catalyst Dx and Catalyst One analyzers.

Product Usage Instructions

  1. Ensure that the Catalyst SDMA Test is stored in a freezer until ready for use.
  2. When ready to run the test, remove the required number of slides from the freezer.
  3. Allow the SDMA slides to reach room temperature before loading them into the Catalyst One or Catalyst Dx analyzer.
  4. Load the SDMA slides into the designated slot or area as indicated by the analyzer’s instructions.
  5. Load the appropriate sample types (serum, lithium heparin plasma, or whole blood with Catalyst Lithium Heparin Whole Blood Separator) onto the designated areas on the slides according to the analyzer’s instructions.
  6. Start the run on the analyzer and wait approximately 8 minutes for the SDMA results to become available.
  7. Review and interpret the SDMA results based on the analyzer’s display and any provided reference ranges or guidelines.
  8. If running with other slides, load them into the analyzer according to the analyzer’s instructions and run them simultaneously with the SDMA test.
  9. Monitor the performance of the SDMA test using VetTrol Control and perform monthly analyzer maintenance as recommended by IDEXX.

Storage and handling requirements

  • Store in the freezer (do not store in the freezer door).
  • No warming required—run directly from the freezer.
  •  SDMA tests can be stored at room temperature for up to 8 hours. After 8 hours, store SDMA tests in the freezer.
  • Recommended sample volume:
    • Whole blood: 600–800 µL
    • Serum/plasma: 100 µL (65 µL minimum; 300 µL if running with other slides)

Frequently asked questions

Question: Answer

  • Do I need to run anything with the SDMA  slide?

    • SDMA can be run alone as a single slide.
  • What sample types can be run on the SDMA test?

    • Compatible sample types include serum, lithium heparin plasma, and whole blood using the Catalyst* Lithium Heparin Whole Blood Separator.
  • Can I run previously frozen samples on the SDMA test?

    • No, frozen samples should not be used when running the Catalyst SDMA Test.
  • Which species have been validated for the SDMA test and what are the numerical results?

    • Canine and feline species are supported with SDMA. Numerical results between 0–100 µg/dL will be reported.
  • Can SDMA be run with other slides?

    • Yes! The test can be run alone or with other slides as part of a comprehensive patient profile. For
example, you could run a Catalyst Lyte 4 CLIP, a Catalyst Chem 17 CLIP, a Catalyst Total T4 Test, and a Catalyst SDMA Test with one patient sample.
  • When running with other slides, should the SDMA test be loaded in a particular order?

    • The SDMA slide can be run in any order after electrolytes.
    • When running SDMA with electrolyte slides, always load the electrolyte slides first.
    • For the quickest time to results for SDMA, the recommended load order is Lyte 4 CLIP on the bottom, followed by a chemistry CLIP (e.g., Chem 17, Chem 10, etc.), SDMA, any additional slides, and TT4 on top.
    • Be sure to load the drawer with pipette tips before every run. (The maximum number of slides per run is 25 slides.)
  • What is the run time for the SDMA test?

    • SDMA results are available ~8 minutes after the start of the run.
  • Is it okay to dilute samples that are undergoing SDMA testing?

    • IDEXX does not support the use of diluted samples when running the Catalyst SDMA Test.
  • How often can SDMA tests be left at room temperature and then returned to the freezer?

    • Once at room temperature, SDMA tests can be returned to the freezer up to 5 times as long as they are unopened.
  • What if an SDMA test is accidentally refrigerated?

    • Any test suspected of being refrigerated should be discarded.
  • Which quality control should I use to monitor the performance of the SDMA test?

    • VetTrol* Control is designed for use in monitoring the accuracy of the Catalyst Dx and Catalyst One analysers. IDEXX also recommends monthly analyser maintenance to ensure the accuracy of these analysers.
