Product Information

The product is a set of handlebar grips for motorcycles. It includes left and right grips with different internal diameters. The left grip has an internal diameter of approximately 22.2mm, while the right grip fits over the throttle slider tube and has a diameter of approximately 25.6mm.

The product comes in three different models with varying standard lengths:

  • Model EL390 – Standard Length: 132mm
  • Model EL391 – Standard Length: 125mm
  • Model EL392 – Standard Length: 125mm

The grips can be trimmed to fit if necessary, with minimum lengths provided for each model.

Product Usage Instructions

  1. Before fitting the grips, ensure that the following parts are included in the kit.
    • Course and fine files for smoothing the throttle slider tube
    • Glasspaper for cleaning the handlebars
    • Cable snippers or pliers
    • Standard motorcycle tools to remove the seat, fairing panels, and battery connections (check with manufacturer)
  2. Remove the existing handlebar grips and clean the left handlebar to ensure it is smooth and free of glue and residue.
  3. If the right grip is removed, smooth off any raised areas on the nylon throttle slider tube to ensure a consistent diameter of 25.6mm.
  4. Always dry fit the grip to the bar first to ensure a snug fit before using adhesive.
  5. Do not pull the grip wires or use them as a lever when fitting the grips to the handlebars to avoid damage.
  6. If the grips are too tight to slide on with a gentle effort, do not force them or use a hammer. This may cause damage to the internal plastic tube or the inbuilt controller.
  7. If the left grip is too tight, check the dimensions of the handlebar and ensure there is no glue residue. If the right grip is too tight to fit over the throttle tube, check the tube’s diameter and file any ridges smoothly if necessary.
  8. Twist the grips into place until they reach the correct finished position on the handlebars.
  9. Ensure that the throttle grip operates freely and returns to the closed position without abnormal friction. If there is binding, it indicates a tight fit between the throttle tube and grip.
  10. Position the grips on the handlebars so that the wires do not foul against the brake/clutch levers. The throttle grip should rotate freely without obstruction and without stretching or pinching the wires. Ensure that the grip’s cable entry point is below the level of the clutch and brake lever.
  11. Before the final fitting procedure, connect the electrical wiring harness to the battery and the grips. With the motorcycle engine running, switch on the grips to ensure they operate as expected.
  12. Position the wiring loom away from the existing wiring looms on the motorcycle to avoid possible electrical interference issues.

GRIP LENGTHS AND TRIMMING TO FIT

Your Oxford HotGrips® PRO are designed as a replacement for the handlebar grips already fitted to the motorcycle. HotGrips® will fit onto most motorcycles that use 22mm or 7/8” handlebars. The grip has an open end to allow for the bar end weight to be refitted without the need to trim the grip. If the end of the Hotgrip does need to be trimmed to ensure that a bar-end weight can be fitted without fouling the HotGrips®, then it is advisable to trim the point shown in the diagram/table below. This ensures that the heating elements do not get cut.

The left and right grip have different internal diameters: The left grip has an internal diameter of approximately 22.2mm. The right grip fits over the throttle slider tube and has a diameter of approximately 25.6mm.

REMOVAL OF EXISTING GRIPS AND PREPARATION

  1. Remove the existing handlebar grips.
  2. Clean the left handlebar ensuring that the bars are smooth and free of glue and residue.
  3. When the right grip is removed there is a nylon throttle slider tube underneath. Any raised areas should be smoothed off to ensure that the diameter is a consistent 25.6mm. This often involves filing off the raised ridges that were formed on the throttle.

TRIAL FIT THE OXFORD HOTGRIPS

  1. Always “dry fit” the grip to the bar first, to ensure that the grip is a snug fit before using the adhesive.
  2. Do not pull the grip wires or use that part of the grip as a lever when fitting the grips to the handlebars as damage may occur.
  3. If the grips are too tight to slide on with only a gentle effort, do not force them on or use a hammer to knock the grips onto the handlebars as this will crack the internal plastic tube or damage/break the inbuilt controller.
  4. If the left grip is too tight, check the dimensions of the handlebar and ensure there is no glue residue. If the right grip is too tight to fit over the throttle tube, firstly check the tube is a consistent diameter, file any ridges smooth if necessary.
  5. If the HotGrips® still do not slide on easily, use a file and gently remove excess rubber from the inside of the HotGrips®.
  6. When sliding the grips onto the handlebars it is possible to twist them into place until they reach the correct finished position.
  7. Ensure that the throttle (right) grip operates freely and returns to the closed position without abnormal friction. If the grip binds on return then it indicates that the fit between the throttle tube and grip is too tight.

POSITIONING ON HANDLEBARS

  1. Position the grips so that the wires do not foul against the brake/clutch levers. The throttle grip should rotate freely without obstruction and without stretching or pinching the wires. Ensure that the grips cable entry point is below the level of the clutch and brake lever (shown below).OXFORD-EL391-HotGrips-Pro-Touring-Heated-Grips-fig- \(2\)

WIRING HARNESS INSTALLATION

  1. Before removing the grips for the final fitting procedure, it is important to connect the electrical wiring harness to the battery and the grips. With the motorcycle engine running the grips can be switched on to make sure that the grips operate as expected.
  2. The loom is designed for ease of fitting. All connections are through the multi-pin water-proof connectors and cannot be fitted the wrong way around.
  3. We recommend that the wiring loom is positioned away from the existing wiring looms on the motorcycle to avoid any possible electrical interference issues.
  4. Both the negative and positive battery connections are fitted with a ring terminal. This will allow them to be bolted to the battery terminals. It is both preferable and also the easiest option to connect the positive (+ Red Wire) straight to the positive (+) battery terminal so that the switch receives sufficient voltage from the vehicles charging system.
  5. The negative or earth (black wire) should be connected to the negative (-) battery terminal.
  6. Direct connection to the battery will not flatten the battery because the switch uses zero power in standby.
  7. If the switch is connected to a switched ignition supply feed, please ensure that the wiring harness is connected to the main ignition cabling which can take the extra load of up to 4 amps. Do not remove the fuse from the circuit. It is there to give protection.
  8. Problems are commonly found to be caused when connections are made to the horn or any lighting circuit.

If unsure, please contact your local Oxford dealer for advice before fitting these HotGrips®.

FINAL FITTING OF THE HOT GRIPS

  1. Use the Superglue provided. It has been proven for the application and we cannot guarantee the suitability of an alternative. Under no circumstances should the grip be fitted to the handlebar without glue!
  2. WARNING: The Superglue will bond skin and eyes in seconds. Keep out of reach of children.
    • It is very important to fit the grips immediately and without delay, because the superglue provided will bond the HotGrips® to the bars and throttle tube very quickly.
    • Do not let the glue drip onto the paintwork. Shield paintwork appropriately.
  3. Clutch (left) HotGrip:
    • Apply the glue to the HotGrip and allow it to run down the internal faces of the HotGrip so that as much of the internal faces are covered with glue as possible.
    • Push the grips into place ensuring that the HotGrips® are positioned correctly so it does not foul the clutch operation.
  4. Throttle (right) HotGrip:
    • Apply the glue into the HotGrip so that as much of the internal faces as possible are covered with glue.
    • If the grips are a very tight fit over the throttle slider, then is it advisable to apply glue onto the actual plastic throttle slider on the innermost flange and less along the length of the throttle slider. This is to ensure that the grip and glue do not set too early and leave the grip stuck halfway up the throttle slider.
    • Push the grips into place ensuring that the HotGrips® are positioned correctly so it does not foul the throttle operation.
  5. Be sure to act immediately to wipe away any excess glue with a dry cloth.
  6. Allow the glue to dry for at least 24 hours before using. Ensure that the grips are firmly fixed in place before use. Do not use it if the grips move and seek advice immediately.

USAGE GUIDELINES

Once fitted, the Oxford HotGrips® PRO are designed for keeping gloved hands at a comfortably warm temperature. The PRO grips are individually thermistor controlled allowing the user to pick a set temperature between 45-35 degrees. Whether the chosen setting is 45, 40, or 35 degrees (113 – 104 – 95°F) the controller will apply MAX power until this temperature is individually measured in both the clutch grip and throttle grip. As each grip is constantly measured independently the intelligent controller can apply more power to one to maintain the set temperature over both grips.

This removes the need to constantly adjust the heat settings. If the grips are too hot please ensure the heat controller is turned down or even switched OFF if necessary.

INTEGRATED SWITCH OPERATIONS:

  • The inbuilt controller has one raised button to make it easier to locate and feel when riding.
  • To turn on the HotGrips®, press and hold the button on for 3 seconds
  • The LED will then display RED (High 45°C) – enabling full power until 45°C is reached.
  • To reduce the temperature continue to press the button, this will cycle to WHITE (MID 40°C) followed by BLUE (LOW 30°C).
  • The button will continue to cycle through heat settings going from HIGH to LOW, to turn off the HotGrip press and hold the button for 3 seconds.

SWITCH FEATURES:

  • The integrated switch removes the need to have a floating controller – creating a more streamlined product.
  • Auto-dimming LED – Once the heat program is selected the LED will dim to 50% after 5 seconds to ensure the user is not distracted during night riding.
  • The Integrated controller has 3 temperature settings – 45 – 40 – 35°C (113 – 104 – 95°F)
  • Intelligent heat monitoring – Constantly reading each grip temperature and adjusting the power output to keep a constant heat level.
  • If connected to the ignition, the switch will remember the last heat setting you used and return to that setting when the vehicle is restarted.
  • Reduced heat-up time to set temperatures – the controller will supply full power from the start to reach the set temperature.
  • The new wire heating element pattern provides an upgraded heat distribution around the user’s hand.

Please note that the grips may be perceived as ‘cool’ to touch when no hands/gloves have been applied for a long period, this is due to the onboard thermistor measuring the correct temperature for the grip surface. Once hands/gloves have been applied the grips will start to heat up rapidly ensuring the user’s gloved hands quickly warm up to the desired set temperature.

BATTERY SAVING MODE (BSM):

Lead Acid (BSM) + Lithium (BSM)
BSM is designed to save the motorcycle battery from being drained to a low voltage level and causing damage to the battery.

LEAD ACID BSM – IDEAL FOR AGM/MF/WET BATTERIES

  • The BSM kicks in at <13.3 Volts, this shows that the motorbike alternator is not running, the battery is faulty or the load on the system of the motorbike is too high. At this voltage, the BSM kicks in cutting the power to the grips and the BSM LED flashes green.

  • The HotGrips® will then read and record the voltage over a 2-second period to confirm that the voltage has dropped below this set level.

  • The BMS will continue to flash and provide no power to the grips but will continue to monitor the battery voltage level. This will happen for a period of 5 mins – if the voltage remains within this voltage bracket the controller will turn off.
    OR

  • Once the threshold voltage level reaches <12.8V (over the 2-second period) the grips will completely cut off within 15 seconds.

  • If the voltage level rises above 13.3V before the <12.8V time limit has been reached the grips will kick back in and provide heat to the grips – canceling BSM

LITHIUM BSM – IDEAL FOR LIFEPO4 PERFORMANCE BATTERIES

  • The BSM kicks in at <14.0 Volts, this shows that the motorbike alternator is not running, the battery is faulty or the load on the system of the motorbike is too high.

This will happen for a period of 5 mins – if the voltage remains within this voltage bracket the controller will turn off
    OR

  • Once the threshold voltage level reaches <13.6V (over the 2-second period) the grips will completely cut off within 15 seconds.

  • If the voltage level rises above 14.0V before the <13.6V time limit has been reached the grips will kick back in and provide heat to the grips – canceling BSM

If the battery is damaged, has an extremely small capacity (AH) or the motorcycle has a large drain from other accessories then the battery’s running voltage may be low enough to trigger the BSM to protect the battery.
In the case that the motorcycle’s battery has an extremely small capacity (AH), the HotGrips® should be wired to a ‘switched live’ and the BSM should be turned OFF.

CHANGING BETWEEN BSM MODES:
There are 3 BSM settings, Lead Acid, OFF, and Lithium BSM. To change between modes ensure the HotGrips® are already on, press and hold the power button for 5/7 seconds, this process will turn off the HotGrips® however, please keep holding until the green light (flash) is visible. The number of flashes will indicate which mode the HotGrips® are now in, this will need to be repeated to cycle through the 3 settings. The HotGrips® are preset to Lead Acid BSM from the factory.

  • ‘1’ Flash – Lead Acid (AGM/MF/WET)
  • ‘3’ Flashes – OFF
  • ‘5’ Flashes – Lithium (LiFePO4)

WARNING
TURNING OFF BATTERY SAVING MODE MAY RESULT IN DRAINING THE BATTERY WHEN THE HOTGRIPS® ARE CONNECTED DIRECTLY TO THE BATTERY.

TECHNICAL DATA

  • This switch is extremely efficient and will draw zero Amps. Therefore long-term connection will not flatten a battery.
  • This switch has been lab-tested to ensure EMC compliance and more importantly has been subjected to the most severe automotive spike and pulse laboratory testing to ensure that none of the electrical circuits on the motorcycle could damage or interfere with the operation of the switch.
  • Conforms to relevant European EMC directives.
  • 12 Volt systems only (typically running voltage between 13.6 and 14.6 volts).
  • Current drain: Average 3.6 Amps per pair (50 Watts@14.0V).
  • Fuse: 5 Amp mini-blade fuse.
  • On some motorcycles that have older or small-capacity batteries, the extra electrical current demanded by the HotGrips® can reduce the battery voltage levels, and replacing this by charging is recommended. Therefore, we always advise you to connect the battery to a charging system such as one of the Oxford Oximiser chargers when the bike is not in use.
