Special safety instructions for handling carbon dioxide CO2
Observe and follow the safety instructions and safety data sheet of the CO2 manufacturer as well as the valid national safety conditions, rules and regulations for the place of application.
WARNING

  • Inhalation of CO2 in concentrated form is dangerous to the health. Therefore the breathing air may not contain greater concentrations of CO2. There is danger of suffocation!!!
  • If a CO2 system or a defective safety valve leaks CO2, this must be allowed to escape into the outside air immediately. Submerged rooms (pits, shafts, basements) must be evacuated immediately.
  • Only work in a well aired environment. CO2 is non-toxic and non-fl ammable but heavier than air. It therefore gathers near the fl oor and displaces the air if there is no adequate ventilation. Danger of suffocation!

WARNING

  • Work with naked fl ames may not be carried out closer than 60 cm from thefreezing point.
  • Do not hit freezed collars with tools (danger of breakage).
  • Keep other persons and especially children, also animals away. Dry ice causes burns in contact with the skin. Do not dispose of residue ice from collars care- lessly at the end of work but throw it in the waste bin.

WARNING
Handling CO2 cylinders

  • Unauthorised refi lling of CO2 from one gas cylinder into another is a high safety risk and must be performed by appropriately trained staff of an authorised fi lling company.
  • CO2 cylinder valves frequently have overpressure protection in the form of arupture disc which is fi xed to the valve by a union nut. This device may never be never be never manipulated in any way to avoid unwanted and dangerous escaping of CO2.
  • CO2 ice can be dangerous in many ways. There is a danger of cold burns if the emerging jet comes into contact with the human skin.
  • CO2 cylinders with dip tubes are clearly labelled as such by the fi lling company and have a red valve hand wheel.
  • Gas cylinders must be secured against falling over during transport, storage and drawing off gas.
  • The gas cylinder must be removed from the vehicle before drawing off gas.
  • When using gas cylinders with a protective cap, the protective cap must beproperly refi tted to the gas cylinder for transport and storage after drawing off gas.

Drawing from CO2 cylinders with dip tubes

  • CO2 must be drawn from the CO2 cylinder in a liquid state is order to produce CO2 ice (dry ice). Therefore only use CO2 cylinders with a dip tube. Do not attach a pressure regulator to the cylinder. Keep the cylinder in a secure, upright position.
  • Due to technical reasons the CO2 cylinder can never be fully emptied. Never manipulate nozzles, collars or valves including cylinder valves.

WARNING

  • The drawing device must therefore be pressure-proof and suitable for liquid CO2.
For example, it could be fatal to connect a CO2 cylinder with dip tube without or without pressure regulator to a beer barrel. The beer barrel might not be able to withstand the evaporating CO2 liquid and would burst.

  • A frozen cylinder valve could prevent it from being closed. For safety reasons, you must wait until the valve has thawed. A protective cap may on no account be screwed on because this could build up pressure due to formation of dry ice or snow and cause a high injury risk during handling.

WARNING
Transport of CO2 gas cylinders

  • Pressurised gas cylinders should only be transported with cylinder trolleys or in case of small cylinders in suitable cariers or in the cylinder pallet. Do not hang pressurised gas cylinders to a crane by the valve protection (e.g. protective cap or cage) for transport. The valve protection devices are designed exclusively for protection of the valve and may not be used for lifting with a crane or lifting devices (e.g. chains).
  • Lifting and carrying the gas cylinder by the cylinder valve or connected fi ttings is not permissible.
  • Pay attention to adequate ventilation when transporting gas cylinders in a closed vehicle.

Storage of CO2 gas cylinders

  • A risk assessment must be made before emptying pressurised gas cylinders.
  • Pressurised gas cylinders connected for emptying must always be secured against falling over.
  • Before emptying pressurised gas cylinders, it must be ensured that the gas cannot fl ow back into the pressurised gas cylinders from the pipe system.
  • Gas cylinders may only be stored in well-aired areas.
  • It is not permissible to leave gas cylinders in a closed, unventilated vehicle.

Technical Data

Use for the intended purpose
WARNING
REMS Eskimo is intended for freezing unemptied pipes with carbon dioxide (CO2) refrigerant.
All other uses are not for the intended purpose and are therefore prohibited.
1.1. Scope of Supply
Pipe freezer, 2 freeze collars each Ø ⅛” – 2″, Ø 10–60 mm (10 sizes), bottle connection with T-distributor, closing nut, 2 handle pieces with injector nozzle, 2 high-pressure hoses, operating instructions, plastic case.
1.2. Working range
Steel, copper, plastic, composite pipes Ø ⅛ – 2″, Ø 10 – 60 mm
The ice pack which forms in the pipe is capable of withstanding a pressure of approx. 500 bar.
1.3. Refrigerant
Carbon dioxide (CO2), commercially available in cylinders of different sizes. It is best to purchase large cylinder sizes.
1.4. Noise data
Emission at workplace 75 dB(A).

Preparations for Use

Remove the seal from the CO2 cylinder. Screw connector with T-distributor to cylinder valve (right-hand thread). Screw high-pressure hoses to the T-distributor. Screw on the handle piece with injector nozzle to the high- pressure hoses (Fig. 1). Choose freeze collars which correspond to the size of the pipe to be frozen. Place the freeze collars on the pipe and secure by tightening the screws evenly to give a fi rm but not overtight hold (Fig. 2). Turn and, at the same time, push each handle piece with  njector nozzle into the bore of the freeze collar until it is completely inserted and resting against the stop (Fig. 3).
If one only operates with one collar, the free side of the T-distributor has to be closed by the closing nut. If a 3. or further freezing points are required, additional T-distributors (accessory) can be connected to the T-distributor.

Operation

Use eye protection
WARNING
CO2 displaces air! Do not use REMS Eskimo in submerged rooms (pits, shafts, basements). Danger of suffocation!
The water (or other liquid) in the pipe can only be frozen when it is no longer fl owing. All pumps must therefore be stopped and no liquid removed or allowed to escape from the pipe. Before freezing, let the water cool down to room temperature.
Fully open the cylinder valve. The amount of CO2 required is controlled automatically.
The liquid CO2 expands in the injector and forms dry ice with a temperature of –79°C and freezes the water within the pipe. After a brief period, frost will form on the pipe in the vicinity of the freeze collars. If frost does not form in accordance with time given in the table, then this indicates that the liquid within the pipe is still flowing (check that all pumps have been switched off and prevent any removal or outfl ow of water) or the water is too warm. While work is in progress, the fl ow of CO2 refrigerant must be maintained, and the CO2 must fl ow out constantly between pipe and collar (pressure compensation).
Always ensure a suffi cient supply of refrigerant by providing a stand-by cylinder.
The only way to determine the amount of remaining CO2 is to weigh the cylinder.
If it is necessary to change the cylinder during work, it is essential that this procedure should be complete within 7 minutes to prevent the ice pack from melting.
Once work is complete, close the cylinder valve and wait until the pressure in the high-pressure hoses has returned to normal. Remove the high-pressure hoses. Once the ice pack has completely melted, completely melted, carefully unscrew and remove the handle pieces with injector from the freeze collar and remove the freeze collar.

Freezing Times

The freezing times and CO2 requirements given in the table below are only to be regarded as general guidelines and are valid for a water temperature of approx. 20°C. The freezing times and refrigerant consumption values will therefore vary for higher temperatures. For freezing liquids in plastic pipes much longer freezing times are generally required.

Procedure in Case of Trouble

Fault: Frost does not form on the pipe.
Cause:

  • Freezing time still too short.
  • Pumps not switched off, outfl ow of water.
  • CO2 cylinder is empty or cylinder valve is not open.
  • Choke in cylinder connector with T-distributor is blocked up.
  • Filter in front of injector nozzle blocked up.

Remedy:

  • Pay attention to freezing times according table.
  • Switch off pumps. Stop water removal.
  • Change CO2 cylinder or open cylinder valve.
  • Clear blockage.
  • Filter in front of injector nozzle blocked up. Unscrew injector nozzle, push fi lter carefully from the back through the handle piece, clean fi lter (blow out).
