General power tool safety warnings

WARNING
Read all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations and specifi cations providedwith this power tool. Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fi re and/or serious injury.
Save all warnings and instructions for future reference.
The term “power tool” in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) powertool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.

  1. Work area safety
    a) Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
    b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
    c) Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

  2. Electrical safety
    a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodifi ed plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
    b) Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
    c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
    d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
    e) When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
    f) If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.

  3. Personal safety
    a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the infl uence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
    b) Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as a dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
    c) Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your fi nger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
    d) Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
    e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
    f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair and clothing away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
    g) If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.
    h) Do not let familiarity gained from frequent use of tools allow you to become complacent and ignore tool safety principles. A careless action can cause severe injury within a fraction of a second.

  4. Power tool use and care
    a) Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
    b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
    c) Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or remove the battery pack, if detachable, from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
    d) Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
    e) Maintain power tools and accessories. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool’s operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
    f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
    g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
    h) Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean and free from oil and grease. Slippery handles and grasping surfaces do not allow for safe handling and control of the tool in unexpected situations.

  5. Service
    a) Have your power tool serviced by a qualifi ed repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.

Safety instructions for electric diamond core drilling machines

WARNING
Read all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations and specifi cations provided with this power tool. Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fi re and/or serious injury.
Save all warnings and instructions for future reference.

  • Only connect the diamond core drilling machine of protection class I to a socket/extension lead with a functioning protective contact. There is a danger of electric shock.
  • Never use the REMS Picus S1, REMS Picus S3, REMS Picus S2/3.5 or REMS Picus SR without the PRCD fault current circuit breaker included. The use of a fault current circuit breaker reduces the risk of electric shock.
  • Always check the PRCD fault current circuit breaker before starting drilling. The use of a fault current circuit breaker reduces the risk of electric shock.
  • Use the REMS Picus DP for dry drilling only. Never feed water into the working area of the REMS Picus DP. It is forbidden to connect a water hose to the REMS Picus DP. REMS Picus DP is not designed for wet drilling and is therefore delivered without a PRCD fault current circuit breaker. Impermissible wet drilling with the REMS Picus DP bears the risk of electric shock.
  • Never loosen the locking screw for the earth cable under any circumstances (Fig. 9 item 59). A correctly connected earth cable reduces the risk of electric shock.
  • Only hold the diamond core drilling machine by the insulated grip surfaces when performing work where the diamond core drilling crown could come into contact with concealed electric cables or its own connecting lead. Contact of the diamond core drilling crown with a live cable can also put metal parts of the diamond core drilling machine under voltage and lead to electric shock.
  • Check the areas concerned for concealed supply lines with a suitable finder before drilling. Drilling can damage or sever gas or water pipes, electric cables or other objects. Damaged gas pipes can cause explosions. Damaged water pipes and electric cables can damage property or cause electric shocks.
  • Make sure that water can never get into the drive unit motor during operation. There is a risk of injury by electric shock if water should penetrate.
  • Do not use the electric diamond core drilling machine for overhead work with a water supply. Penetration of water into the diamond core drilling machine increases the risk of electric shock.
  • Never carry out overhead drilling or drilling to the wall when the drill stand is only fastened by the vacuum plate. If the vacuum is lost, the drill stand will come loose from the base and fall to the floor.
  • When carrying out drilling work that requires the use of water, feed the water away from the working area or use a liquid collecting device, e.g. the REMS water extractor unit (accessory Art. No. 183606). Such precautionary measures keep the working area dry and reduce the risk of electric shock.
  • Cease operation immediately in case of leaks in the water supply and fix the leak. Do not exceed a water pressure of 4 bar. There is a risk of injury by electric shock if water should penetrate the motor.
  • Do not operate the diamond core drilling machine in an explosive environment. Fumes or liquids can ignite or explode.
  • Clean the air vents of your diamond core drilling machine regularly. The motor fan draws dust into the housing and a heavy accumulation of metal dust can cause injury due to electrical hazards.
  • Wear personal safety equipment. Use full face protection, eye protection or protective glasses depending on the application. Where appropriate, wear a dust mask, protective gloves or special aprons which keep away small grinding and material particles and protect you against sharp edges and wear non-slip safety shoes to avoid injury from slippery surfaces. The eyes should be protected against flying foreign bodies which occur in different applications. Dust masks and respirators must filter the dust produced in the application.
  • Wear ear protectors when working with the diamond core drilling machine. Noise can lead to loss of hearing.
  • Use the counterholder (12) provided with the diamond core drilling machine for hand-held drilling. Losing control of the diamond core drilling machine can cause injuries.
  • Always be prepared for blocking of the diamond core drilling crown. Never use stage 1 for hand-held drilling with REMS Picus SR. There is a risk of injury from the diamond core drilling machine being torn out of your hand and spinning round as the torque increases.
  • Do not lock the safety inching switch (21) for hand-held drilling. There is a risk of injury from the diamond core drilling machine being torn out of your hand and spinning round as the torque increases. The diamond core drilling machine can then only be brought to a standstill by pulling out the mains plug.
  • If the diamond core drilling crown blocks, exert no thrust pressure and switch off the diamond core drilling machine. Investigate the reason for the blockage and remedy the cause of the diamond core drilling crown blockage.
  • If you want to restart a diamond core drilling machine that is stuck in the surface or wall, first check whether the diamond core drilling crown turns freely. If it is jammed, it may not turn and this can lead to overloading of the diamond core drilling machine.
  • Never put down the diamond core drilling machine until the diamond core drilling crown has come to a complete standstill. Rotating diamond core drilling crowns can make contact with the surface on which you put down the tool, causing you to lose control of the diamond core drilling machine.
  • Keep the connecting lead away from the rotating diamond core drilling crown. If you lose control over the tool, the connecting lead could be severed or caught and your hand or arm could get into the rotating diamond core drilling crown.
  • Protect the working area on both sides in case of through-bores. A drilling core could fall out and injure persons and/or cause damage.
  • When drilling through walls and ceilings, make sure that persons and the working area on the other side are protected. The diamond core drilling crown can emerge beyond the bore hole and the drilling crown could fall out on the other side.
  • Make sure that the building statics are not negatively infl uenced by the core drilling. Consult the building supervisors or a static engineer to determine and mark the core hole.
  • Check where the bore water flows to in case of hollow parts. Damages (e.g. frost damage) could be caused.
  • Only use the diamond core drilling machine for dry drilling in connection with a suitable safety vacuum cleaner/dust extractor. When working with mineral building materials, e.g. concrete, steel-reinforced concrete, all types of masonry, all types of screed, natural stone, a high degree of mineral dust containing quartz is produced which is harmful to the health. Inhalation of quartzfine dust is harmful to the health. The Directive 89/391/EEC on the taking of measures to improve the safety and health protection of employees at work obliges the employer to carry out an appropriate risk assessment at the employees place of work, determine and evaluate the potential dust load and defi ne necessary protective measures. The German technical ruling for hazardous substances TRGS 559 “Mineral Dust” defines in Appendix 1 that work with slitting and cutting machines must be classified in exposure category 3 if the effectiveness of the extraction has not been proven. In accordance with EN 60335-2-69 a penetration level of < 0.1 % is prescribed for sucking health hazardous dusts with an exposure limit/ work place limit (AGW) of > 0.1 mg/m³.For dry drilling of mineral building materials at least one safety vacuum cleaner/dust extractor of dust class M, e.g. REMS Pull M, should therefore usually be used in order to effectively extract the resulting health hazardous dusts from machines. In addition, the respective national safety provisions, rules and regulations valid for the application site must be considered and observed.
  • Do not aim a liquid jet at the diamond core drilling machine, not even for cleaning. Penetration of water into the diamond core drilling machine increases the risk of electric shock.
  • Pull the plug out of the socket before making device settings or fitting/ changing accessories. Many accidents are caused by accidental starting of diamond core drilling machines.
  • Do not use the diamond core drilling machine if it is damaged. There is a danger of accident.
  • Never let the diamond core drilling machine operate unattended. Switch off the diamond core drilling machine, pull out the mains plug and remove all hoses, if necessary, during longer work breaks. Electrical devices can cause hazards which lead to material damage or injury when left unattended.
  • Children and persons who, due to their physical, sensory or mental abilities or lack of experience and knowledge are unable to operate the power tool safely may not use this power tool without supervision or instruction by a responsible person. Otherwise there is a risk of injury due to false operation.
  • Only allow trained persons to use the power tool. Apprentices may only use the power tool when they are over 16, when this is necessary for their training and when they are supervised by a trained operative.
  • Check the connecting lead of the diamond core drilling machine and extension leads regularly for damage. Have these renewed by qualified experts or an authorised REMS customer service workshop in case of damage.
  • Only use approved and appropriately marked extension leads with a sufficient cable cross-section. Use extension leads up to a length of 10 m with cable cross-section 1.5 mm², from 10 – 30 m with cable cross-section 2.5 mm².

Safety instructions for drill stands

WARNING

  • Pull the plug out of the socket before making device settings or changing accessories. Many accidents are caused by accidental starting of diamond core drilling machines.

  • Set up the drill stand correctly before mounting the diamond core drilling machine. Correct assembly is important to prevent the risk of collapsing.

  • When fastening the drill stand to a surface or wall with plugs and screws, make sure that the used anchoring is capable of holding the diamond core drilling machine securely during use. If the surface or wall is weak or porous, the plug could be pulled out so that the drill stand comes loose from the surface or wall.

  • Fix the diamond core drilling machine securely to the drill stand before use. Slipping of the diamond core drilling machine on the holding device can lead to loss of control.

  • Fix the drill stand to a firm, level surface or wall. The diamond core drilling machine cannot be guided evenly and safely if the drill stand can slip or shake (see 3.3).

  • Do not overload the drill stand or use it as a ladder or scaffold. Overloading or standing on the drill stand can shift the centre of gravity of the stand upwards and cause it to tip over.

  • When fastening the REMS Titan to a surface or wall with the Titan vacuum fastening, make sure that the surface is smooth, clean and not porous. Do not fix the REMS Titan to laminated surfaces, e.g. on tiles and compound material coatings. If the surface or wall is not smooth, level or adequately fixed, the REMS Titan can come loose from the surface or wall.

  • Never use the REMS Picus DP if REMS Titan or a suitable drill stand from another supplier is fastened to a surface or wall by a vacuum fastening.
The drill stand can come loose from the surface or wall due to the micro-pulse technology.

  • Make sure that the vacuum pressure is suffi cient before and during drilling when fastening the REMS Titan to a surface or wall by means of the Titan vacuum fastening. The drill stand can come loose from the surface or wall if the vacuum pressure is insufficient.

Initial startup

2.1 Electrical connection

WARNING
Caution: Mains voltage present! Before connecting the electric diamond core drilling machine, check whether the voltage given on the rating plate corresponds to the mains voltage. Only use sockets/extension leads with a functioning protected earth contact. The function of the PRCD fault current circuit breaker (19)) must be checked every time before start-up:

  1. Plug the mains plug into the socket.
  2. Press the RESET button (17), the PRCD control lamp (16) lights red (operating state).
  3. Pull out the mains plug, the PRCD control lamp (16) must go out.
  4. Plug the mains plug back into the socket.
  5. Press the RESET button (17), the PRCD control lamp (16) lights red (operating state).
  6. Press the TEST button (18), the PRCD control lamp (16) must go out.
  7. Press the RESET button (17) again, the PRCD control lamp (16) lights red.
The electric diamond core drilling machine is ready for operation.

WARNING
If the described functions of the PRCD fault current circuit breaker (19) are not fulfilled, the device may not be used. There is a danger of electric shock. The PRCD fault current circuit breaker tests the connected device, not the installation before the socket nor interconnected extension leads or cable reels.
REMS Picus DP is delivered without a PRCD fault current circuit breaker and is suitable for dry drilling only. Wet drilling with, as well as connection of a water hose to the REMS Picus DP is not permitted. There is a danger of electric shock.
On building sites, in a wet environment, indoors and outdoors or under similar installation conditions, only operate the electric diamond core drilling machine on the mains with a fault current protected switch (FI breaker) which interrupts the power supply as soon as the leakage current to earth exceeds 30 mA for 200 ms. When using an extension lead, a cable cross section suitable for the power of the electric diamond core drilling machine must be chosen.

2.2 REMS Picus drive units
The REMS Picus S1, REMS Picus S3, REMS Picus S2/3.5 and REMS Picus SR drive units are universally applicable for dry or wet drilling, hand-held (REMS Picus S1, REMS Picus S3 and REMS Picus SR) or with a drill stand. The combined drilling crown connection of the drive spindle (11) of REMS Picus S1, REMS Picus S3 and REMS Picus SR allows both the direct mounting of universal diamond core drilling crowns with UNC 1¼ female thread and with G ½ male thread. The REMS Picus S1, REMS Picus S3 and REMS Picus SR drive units are not delivered with the water supply system (15) pre-assembled but loose. The adapter for the water connection on the Picus S1, Picus S3 and Picus SR drive machines is closed by a cover (14). In this condition the drive machines (Picus S1, Picus S3 and Picus SR) are used for dry drilling. The water feed device is already pre-assembled on the REMS Picus S2/3,5. For wet drilling, see 2.5.
The REMS Picus DP drive unit with micro-pulse technology that can be switched on and off is used especially for dry drilling, hand held or with a drill stand. The combined drive spindle (11) of REMS Picus DP allows both direct mounting of the dry diamond core drilling crowns with UNC 1¼ female thread and the tapping tool with G ½” male thread and has an integrated suction rotor for dust extraction with a connection for REMS Pull M and other suitable vacuum cleaners.

NOTICE
The G ½” connection thread in the drive spindle (11) of REMS Picus DP may not be closed for drilling with, for example, a core drilling crown, an adapter or similar because this bore is intended for dust extraction.
The drive-unit turning speed required for cost-effective core drilling depends on the diameter of the diamond core drilling crown. Select the turning speed of the drive unit in such a way that the peripheral speed (cutting speed) of the diamond core drilling crown runs within a range between 2 and 4 m/s. It is of course possible to carry out drilling operations outside this optimum range, albeit subject to reductions in the operating speed and/or service life of the diamond core drilling crown. Higher peripheral speed apply in masonry.
The turning speed of the REMS Picus S1 is adjusted to a fixed setting. From a drilling diameter of 62 mm, the REMS Picus S1 operates in concrete in the optimum peripheral speed range, which always remains inside acceptable limits when smaller diameters are being handled. The attachment method used with the diamond-tipped segments of the REMS Universal diamond core drilling crown has been modifi ed so that smaller diameters can also be drilled efficiently with the REMS Picus S1.
The turning speed of the REMS Picus S3 can be selected by means of a threespeed stepped drive to ensure that in concrete it always operates within the optimum drilling speed range. The correct speed can be taken from the machine rating plate (Fig. 7) of the REMS Picus S3. The first column of the table shown there covers speeds 1 to 3, the second column shows the corresponding turning speeds, the third column the core bit diameters for masonry and the fourth column contains core bit diameters for steel-reinforced concrete. It shows, for example, that a Ø 102 mm core-drilling operation in masonry should be carried out in third speed, while drilling into steel- reinforced concrete requires the use of first speed.

The turning speed of REMS Picus S2/3,5 can be selected by a 2-step switching gear so that it always drills in an optimum area. The right gear can be read from the rating plate (Fig. 8) of REMS Picus S2/3,5. The table there shows gears 1 and 2 in the first column and the corresponding speeds in the second column and the drill crown diameters for masonry and steel-reinforced concrete in the third column.

The rotation of the REMS Picus SR can be selected via a 2-gear stepped drive in combination with a stepless electronic speed regulation to ensure that it always operates within the optimum drilling range. The correct speed can be taken from the table (Fig. 9). The correct gear step is selected at the handle grip (39), the correct rotation via the electronic speed regulation at the dial (57). The electronic speed regulation keeps the selected speed largely constant also under load.

The turning speed of REMS Picus DP is adjusted to a fixed setting. The diamond- tipped segments of the REMS dry diamond core drilling crowns TDKB LS are specially designed for dry drilling in concrete/steel-reinforced concrete, masonry and other materials using the micro-pulse technology with REMS Picus DP without water.

WARNING
Wait for the machine to come to a halt before engaging the transmission!
Never try to do this during operation or outflow. Pull out the mains plug if a gear cannot be switched! At the same time, turn the switch handle (39) and move the drive spindle/diamond core drilling crown by hand.

2.3 REMS universal diamond core drilling crowns UDKB, inductively soldered and resolderable.
REMS universal diamond core drilling crowns UDKB LS, laser-welded and high temperature resistant.
REMS universal diamond core drilling crowns are developed especially for common drilling operations. The connection thread of the REMS universal diamond core drilling crowns UNC 1¼ is compatible with REMS Picus S1, REMS Picus S3, REMS Picus S2/3.5 and REMS Picus SR and suitable drive units from other suppliers. If the connection thread of the drive unit proves to be incompatible, adapters are available as accessories (22).

REMS dry diamond core drilling crowns TDKB LS, laser-welded and high temperature resistant.
The REMS dry diamond core drilling crowns TDKB LS are designed especially for dry drilling, hand-held or with a drill stand, for core drilling machines with micro-pulse technology, e.g. REMS Picus DP and suitable drive units from other suppliers. The connection thread of the REMS dry diamond core drilling crowns UNC 1¼ is compatible with REMS Picus DP and suitable drive units of other suppliers. If the connection thread of the drive unit proves to be incompatible, adapters are available as accessories (22).
The cutting characteristics of the diamond core drilling crown are determined by the quality of the diamonds, the particle-size and shape of the diamonds, and also by the bonding agent – the metal powder in which the diamond particles are set. Users who need to carry out a variety of core-drilling operations should keep a range of diamond core drilling crowns of different sizes to hand in order to optimise the cutting process. It is often only possible to check on site which diamond core drilling crown is best suitable for a drilling operation with regard to cutting performance (operating speed) and useful life. You may even have to contact the manufacturer of the diamond core drilling crown on various occa sions in order to find out which bit should be used.

NOTICE
REMS universal diamond core drilling crowns UDKB and UDKB LS are not suitable for using with REMS Picus DP with micro-pulse technology to drill core holes.

NOTICE
When performing dry drilling with REMS TDKB LS dry diamond core drilling crowns and the REMS Picus DP core drilling machine with micro-pulse technology, it is necessary to extract the health hazardous drilling dusts from the drilling gap with a suitable safety vacuum cleaner of dust class M, e.g. REMS Pull M. Observe the national regulations.

2.3.1 Fitting the diamond core drilling crown

WARNING
Unplug from the mains power supply! Screw the selected diamond core drilling crown onto the drive spindle (11) of the drive unit, and lightly hand-tighten. It is an advantage to insert the quick-release ring ((54) accessory art. no. 180015) between the diamond core drill crown and the drive spindle. Firm tightening with an open-ended wrench is not necessary. Note that the threads on the drive spindle and diamond core drilling crown must be clean.

2.3.2 Removing the diamond core drilling crown
WARNING
Unplug from the mains power supply! Use an SW 32 wrench to hold the drive spindle (11) and an SW 41 wrench to loosen the diamond core drilling crown (48).
Always unscrew the diamond core drilling crown from the drive unit when the drilling task is finished. With wet-drilling operations in particular, there is also a danger of the diamond core drilling crown becoming corroded, making it difficult to remove.

NOTICE
The casing pipes of the diamond core drilling crown are not hardened. Hitting (with tools) and impact (during transport) on the casing pipe will lead to damage that is likely cause the diamond core drilling crown and/or drilling core to become seized. The diamond core drilling crown may then be rendered unusable.

2.3.3 Sharpening the diamond core drilling crown
REMS Universal diamond core drilling crowns have roof-shaped diamond segments and do not have to be sharpened in the as-delivered state. At the right thrust pressure and possibly by adding water, the diamond segments sharpen themselves. Unsuitable thrust pressure as well as dry drilling in concrete leads to the diamond segments being “polished” and no longer being able to cut. If this occurs, use the diamond core drilling crown to drill 10 mm to 15 mm into sandstone, asphalt or a sharpening stone ((55) accessory art. no. 079012) in order to sharpen the diamond-tipped segments once more.

REMS dry diamond core drilling crowns LS are delivered sharpened. The diamond-tipped segments sharpen themselves with the micro-pulse technology on the the core drilling machine switched on, with the use of a safety vacuum cleaner/dust extractor of dust class M, e.g. REMS Pull M (Art. No. 185501) and with the correct thrust pressure. If the diamond-tipped segments are polished due to unsuitable thrust pressure, for example, and therefore no longer cut properly, they can be sharpened. In this case, the diamond core drilling crown is drilled 10 to 15 mm deep into sandstone, asphalt or a sharpening stone ((55) accessory Art. No. 079012) to resharpen the diamond-tipped segments.

2.4 Manually-controlled dry boring REMS Picus S1, REMS Picus S3 and REMS Picus SR (fig. 4), REMS Picus DP (fig. 10)
Secure the holder-up (12) to the drill collar (13) of the drive unit.

WARNING
Only use the tool held by hand with the counterholder (12) fitted (danger of injury)! Never perform hand-held dry drilling with REMS Picus SR in stage 1. The resulting high torque can lead to injury.
Inhalation of the dusts produced by dry drilling is harmful to the health. Observethe national regulations. It is recommended to use a safety vacuum cleaner/ dust extractor of dust class M, e.g. REMS Pull M (Art. No. 185501) with the appropriate filter; observe the operating instructions of the safety vacuumcleaner/dust extractor. Use the suction rotor ((46) accessory Art. No. 180160) with REMS Picus S1, REMS Picus S3 and REMS Picus SR. Connect the safetyvacuum cleaner/dust extractor to the suction hose connection (68) on REMS Picus DP.

CAUTION
The mounted water supply system (15) gets in the way of hand-held dry drilling with REMS Picus S1, REMS Picus S3 and REMS Picus SR and should therefore be disconnected. Remember to shut off the water inlet with its sealing cap (14) to prevent dust from getting into the machine.

NOTICE
Always wet drilling with REMS universal diamond core drilling crowns and REMS universal diamond core drilling crowns LS for steel-reinforcedconcrete!
Always dry drilling with REMS dry diamond core drilling crowns LS with core drilling machines with micro-pulse technology. Suck off the resultingdrilling dust with a suitable safety vacuum cleaner/dust extractor! Observethe national regulations.

2.4.1 Only use tapping tool G ½ UDKB for REMS Picus S1, Picus S3 and Picus SR and tapping tool G ½ TDKB for Picus DP
Manually-controlled tapping is made considerably easier, thanks to the REMS tapping tool (49). This is fi tted with a conventional hardened- metal Ø 8 mm masonry bit, which is secured in place with an SW 3 hexa gon socket head wrench. The G ½ thread is used to screw the tapping tool into the spindle of the drive unit, where it is gently tightened with an SW 19 wrench.
Due to different lengths of the REMS UDKB and UDKB LS to the REMS TDKB LS, the G ½ UDKB tapping tool cannot be used for the REMS TDKB and the G ½ TDKB tapping tool not for the REMS UDKB and UDKB LS!

2.4.2 Dust extraction REMS Picus S1, REMS Picus S3 and REMS Picus SR (fi g. 4), REMS Picus DP (fi g. 10)

WARNING
Inhalation of the dusts produced by dry drilling is harmful to the health. Observe the national regulations. It is recommended to use a dust extractor to remove drilling dust from the core bore. For REMS Picus S1, REMS Picus S3 and REMS Picus SR, this consists of the REMS suction rotor ((46) accessory Art. No. 180160) for dust extraction and a safety vacuum cleaner/dust extractor of dust class M suitable for commercial use, e.g. REMS Pull M (Art. No. 185501)..
Observe the operating instructions of the safety vacuum cleaner/dust extractor.
The suction rotor (46) is screwed to the drive spindle (11) of the drive unit using the G ½ connector. The combined annular core bit connector (47) on the opposite side permits the fitting of diamond core drilling crowns with female thread UNC 1¼ and the attachment of the tapping tool (49).
REMS Picus DP has an integrated suction rotor for dust extraction. The suitable safety vacuum cleaner/dust extractor of dust class M, e.g. REMS Pull M (Art. No. 185501) is connected directly to REMS Picus DP at the suction hose connection (68).

NOTICE
Always wet drilling with REMS universal diamond core drilling crowns and REMS universal diamond core drilling crowns LS for steel-reinforced concrete!
Always dry drilling with REMS dry diamond core drilling crowns LS with core drilling machines with micro-pulse technology. Suck off the resulting drilling dust with a suitable safety vacuum cleaner/dust extractor! Observe the national regulations.
If the dust produced by dry boring is not removed, the diamond core drilling crown may overheat and suffer damage. There is also a risk of injury when the drilling dust compressed in the gap blocks the diamond core drilling crown.

2.5 Wet boring REMS Picus S1, Picus S3, Picus S2/3.5 and Picus SR
Optimum drilling performance will only be achieved if the diamond core drilling crown is provided with a constant supply of water. This keeps the diamond core drilling crown cool and allows drilled-out material to be swilled from the bore hole. To connect the water supply system (15), remove the cover (14) and attach the water supply system with the fillister head screw supplied. The quick-action coupling with water shut off device should be fitted with a ½” water hose. Water pressure should not exceed 4 bar.
If there is no direct water connection available, water throughflow can be achieved using the water pressure tank ((51) accessory art. no. 182006). Be aware that there is sufficient water flow.
When drilling with REMS Titan or REMS Simplex 2 the water extractor ((44) accessory art. no. 183606) can be used. See Fig. 11 and 12 for assembly. This consists of a water collecting ring, a pressure ring and a rubber washer (45). The water extractor is fixed to the base of the drilling column (1). The water collecting ring is connected to a wet vacuum cleaner suitable for commercial use, e.g. REMS Pull L or REMS Pull M. The rubber washer (45) must be cut out exactly to fit the diameter of the diamond core drilling rown.

WARNING
REMS Picus DP is delivered without a PRCD fault current circuit breaker and is suitable for dry drilling only. Wet drilling with, as well as connection of a water hose to the REMS Picus DP is not permitted. There is a danger of electric shock.

2.6 Boring with a drill upright
Good results can be obtained by operating with a drill upright. The purpose of the drill upright is to guide the drive unit. Its power transfer rack-and- pinion drive system ensures both hole-tapping with “feel” and powerful infeed of the diamond core drilling crown. REMS Picus S1, REMS Picus S3, REMS Picus SR and REMS Picus DP can be mounted optionally on the REMS Simplex 2 or REMS Titan drill stand. REMS Picus S2/3,5 must be mounted on REMS Titan.
In REMS Titan the clamping angle (10) or the REMS Picus S2/3.5 must be mounted. The clamping angle (10) or the REMS Picus S2/3.5 must be inserted in the guide (53) and fastened with the screws (52) for this.
The boring trestle (1) of REMS Titan is infinitely adjustable up to 45°. This allows angled core drilling operations to be carried out within this angle range. The degree marks on the struts (40) serve for orientation. To adjust the angle, the two screws (31) at the foot of the boring trestle (1) are removed. The hexagon head screw (37) and all the screws on the two struts must be loosened. The boring trestle can now be swivelled to the desired position. Retighten all screws before proceeding. The screws (31) are not installed to produce the angled core drilling operation(s). The swivel adjustment of the boring trestle causes the useful stroke range of the feed device of the REMS Titan to decrease more or less. This means that you may have to use corresponding annular bit extensions ((50) accessory art. no. 180155) (see 3.7).
The feed slide (2) can be locked on the drill stands. Tighten the wing nut (32) for this. Locking prevents such undesired movements as the accidental lowering of the drive unit while the diamond core drilling crown is being replaced.
On all drill stands the feed lever (4) can be fitted to the right or left of the feed slider (2) according to local conditions (not preassembled in the as- delivered state of REMS Simplex 2). Lock the feed slider as described above for this. Unscrew the fillister head screw (34). Pull the feed lever off the feed shaft and push it onto the shaft stump opposite. Screw in and tighten the fillister head screw (34).
To achieve better stability when drilling with REMS Titan and REMS Picus SR, the spacer set (38) can be mounted. For this, the clamping angle (10) may have to be disassembled from the REMS Titan by loosening the screws (52). Then clamping angle (10) is pushed onto the drill collar (13) of the REMS Picus SR so that the tapped holes (60) of the gearbox casing of Picus SR are positioned in relation to the screw holes of the clamping angle (10). Insert the spacer (without fillister head screws) and align. Screw in the fillister head screws included in the set and tighten. Tighten the fillister head screws (8) of the clamping angle (10). Fix the mounted clamping bracket together with Picus SR to the REMS Titan as described in 3.4.

NOTICE
Remove dirt from between rack and slide immediately otherwise the slide can block. The rack and slide could also be damaged.

2.7 Laser drilling centre pointer
To position the REMS drill stand, the laser drilling centre pointer ((58) accessory art. no. 183604) is inserted into the clamping bracket (10) and tightened with the fillister head screws (8). After switching on the laser drilling centre pointer, the drill stand can be aligned accurately at the marked drilling centre with the laser point and fixed in position.

WARNING
Do not look directly into the laser beam!

2.8 Drilling template REMS Titan
A drilling template ((64) accessory art. no. 183605) can be used for REMS Titan for easier location of the plug hole.

Operation

| Use eye protection| | Use a respirator
---|---|---|---
| Use ear protection| | Use hand protection

Suitable safety vacuum cleaners/dust extractors, e.g. REMS Pull M, a respirator and disposable overalls must be used for work which could produce health hazardous dusts. Observe the national regulations.
Plug the mains plug into the socket. Check the function of the PRCD fault current circuit breaker (19) every time before starting drilling (see 2.1 Electrical connection); not necessary for REMS Picus DP.
Different material characteristics (concrete, steel-reinforced concrete, porous or solid masonry) require different and varying feed pressures on the diamond core drilling crown. Further influence is brought to bear by the varying peripheral speed and size of the bit. It is inevitable, espe cially during manually controlled boring, that the machine will occasionally become slightly tilted as it operates. These factors, which are merely examples of those that might arise, can lead to overloading of the drive unit during drilling operations. You will normally hear the turning speed of the motor drop, although the diamond core drilling crown may become completely blocked. This can lead, especially during manuallycon trolled boring, to torque-related jarring – which will affect the  operation.

WARNING
Note that the diamond core drilling crown can become blocked at any time. During hand-held core drilling, there is a risk of injury from the diamond core drilling machine being torn out of your hand and spinning round as the torque increases. Never use stage 1 for hand-held drilling with REMS Picus SR.
In order to simplify the handling of the machine, and to avoid damage, the REMS Picus S1, REMS Picus S3, REMS Picus S2/3.5, REMS Picus SR and REMS Picus DP are equipped with a multi-function electronic system, along with a mechanical sliding clutch. The multi-function electronic system performs the following tasks:

  • Initial-current limitation and jerk-free startup for smooth tapping.
  • Limiting of idling speed in order to reduce noise and prevent wear to the motor and transmission.
  • Motor overload regulation relative to feed pressure. Before the drive unit can be overloaded by excessive feed pressure on the diamond core drilling crown, or as the result of a blockage, the motor supply current – and thus its turning speed – is reduced to a minimum. The drive unit does not shut down however. As the feed pressure is reduced, the turning speed of the drive unit is increased once more. This procedure, even if it is repeated several times in succession, prevents damage to the drive unit. If the motor remains stopped despite the reduction in feed pres sure, the drive unit must be shut down and the diamondtipped annular bit freed manually (see 5.).

NOTICE
DO NOT switch the drive unit on and off to loosen a jammed diamond core drilling crown. This can cause a machine defect (see 5.1.).

3.1.1 Manually-controlled dry boring REMS Picus S1, REMS Picus S3 and REMS Picus SR (fig. 4)
WARNING
Use the counterholder (12) provided with the diamond core drilling machine for hand-held drilling. Losing control of the diamond core drilling machine can cause injuries. Always be prepared for blocking of the diamond core drilling crown. Never use stage 1 for hand-held drilling with REMS Picus SR. There is a risk of injury from the diamond core drilling machine being torn out of your hand and spinning round as the torque increases.

CAUTION
When drilling dry by hand, the mounted water supply system (15) gets in the way and should be removed. The holder for the water connection must be sealed with the lid (14) otherwise dust can get into the machine.
Use dust extraction and suitable safety vacuum cleaner/dust extractor, e.g. REMS Pull M. Screw the selected REMS universal diamond core drilling crown/REMS universal diamond core drilling crown LS onto the drive spindle (11) of the drive unit and lightly hand-tighten. There is no need to tighten it with a wrench. Use the G ½ UDKB tapping tool (49) (see 2.4.1.). Hold the drive unit by the motor handle (20) and the brace (12) and place the G ½ UDKB tapping tool (49) in the centre of the desired core hole. Switch on the drive unit with safety inching switch (21).

WARNING
Never lock the safety inching switch (21) of the drive unit during hand-held drilling (Risk of injury)! If the drive unit is knocked out of your hand by a blocking diamond core drilling crown, a locked safety inching switch can no longer be unlocked. The drive unit will then run out of control, and the unit must be shut down by unplugging it from the mains supply.
To make a tapping hole, drill until the diamond core drilling crown has bored to a depth of about 5 mm.

WARNING
Pull out the mains plug! Screw out the G ½ UDKB tapping tool (49); loosen with a size 19 open-ended wrench if necessary. Using the dust-extraction system (see 2.4.2.). Continue boring until the core-drilling opera tion is complete. Always hold the drive unit by the insulated grip surfaces to safely absorb torque surges (risk of accident!). Check to ensure correct stability. Carry out larger core-drilling operations with the drill upright.
Make sure that the suction hose of the safety vacuum cleaner/dust extractor does not kink and impair the dust extraction. Also make sure that no fragments of stone or other objects jam in the diamond core drilling crown, the suction rotor ((46) accessory art. no. 180160) and/or the suction hose. Empty the dust bag of the safety vacuum cleaner/dust extractor early and clean/renew the filter regularly. Observe the operating instructions of the safety vacuum cleaner/dust extractor.
If the dust produced by dry boring is not removed, the diamond core drilling crown may overheat and suffer damage. There is also a danger of the compressed drilling dust in the drilling gap causing the diamond core drilling crown to become blocked. If you need to work without the dust-extraction system when handling fine-pored materials, pull the diamond core drilling crown out at regular intervals and push it back in with a slight turn, so that the drilling dust is expelled from the drilling gap. Suitable safety equipment, e.g. respirator, disposable overalls, must be used. Observe the national regulations.

NOTICE
Always wet drilling with REMS universal diamond core drilling crowns and REMS universal diamond core drilling crowns LS for steel-reinforced concrete!
Always dry drilling with REMS dry diamond core drilling crowns LS with core drilling machines with micro-pulse technology. Suck off the resulting drilling dust with a suitable safety vacuum cleaner/dust extractor! Observe the national regulations.

3.1.2 Hand-held dry drilling REMS Picus DP (Fig. 10)

WARNING
Use the counterholder (12) provided with the diamond core drilling machine for hand-held drilling. Losing control of the diamond core drilling machine can cause injuries. Always bear in mind that the diamond core drilling crown could block at any time. There is a risk of injury from the diamond core drilling machine being torn out of your hand and spinning round as the torque increases.

NOTICE
For dry drilling in concrete/steel-reinforced concrete with REMS Picus DP and the REMS dry diamond core drilling crowns LS, it is necessary to switch on the micro-pulse technology and use a suitable safety vacuum cleaner/dust extractor of dust class M, e.g. REMS Pull M, for dust extraction. For drilling in masonry and other materials, the micro-pulse technology can be switched off and a suitable safety vacuum cleaner/dust extractor, e.g. REMS Pull M, must be used. Observe the national regulations.
Screw the selected REMS dry diamond core drilling crown TDKB LS onto the drive spindle (11) of the drive unit and lightly hand-tighten. There is no need to tighten it with an open-ended wrench. Use the G ½ TDKB tapping tool (49) (see 2.4.1.). Connect a suitable safety vacuum cleaner/dust extractor, e.g. REMS Pull M, to REMS Picus DP (see 2.4.2.). Switch off the micro-pulse technology of REMS Picus DP for tapping. To do this, turn the micro-pulse technology adjusting ring (Fig. 10 (69)) to the detent position so that the red markings are not in line. Hold the drive unit by the insulated grip surfaces of the motor handle (20) and the brace (12) and place the G ½ TDKB tapping tool (49) in the centre of the desired core hole. Switch on the drive unit with safety inching switch (21).

WARNING
Never lock the safety inching switch (21) of the drive unit when holding the drill by hand (risk of injury)! If the drive unit is knocked out of your hand by a blocking diamond core drilling crown, a locked safety inching switch can no longer be unlocked. The drive unit will then run out of control and can only be brought to a standstill by pulling out the mains plug.
Tap until the diamond core drilling crown has penetrated to a depth of approx. 5 mm.

WARNING
Pull out the mains plug! Screw out the G ½ TDKB tapping tool (49); loosen with a size 19 open-ended wrench if necessary. Use a dust extractor (see 2.4.2). Switch on the micro-pulse technology of REMS Picus DP. To do this, turn the micro-pulse technology adjusting ring (Fig. 10 (69)) to the detent position so that the red markings are in line. Continue drilling until the core hole is fi nished. Always hold the drive unit by the insulated grip surfaces to safely absorb torque surges (risk of accident!). Make sure that you have a safe footing. Carry out larger core-drilling operations with a drill stand.
Make sure that the suction hose of the safety vacuum cleaner/dust extractor does not kink and impair the dust extraction. Also make sure that no loosened lumps of rock or other objects jam in the diamond core drilling crown, the drive unit’s suction rotor and/or the suction hose. Empty the dust bag of the safety vacuum cleaner/dust extractor early and clean/renew the fi lter regularly. Observe the operating instructions of the safety vacuum cleaner/dust extractor.

If the dust produced by dry drilling is not removed, the diamond core drilling crown may overheat and suffer damage. There is also a risk that the drilling dust compressed in the drilling gap will block the diamond core drilling crown.

NOTICE
If insuffi cient thrust pressure is applied when performing hand-held drilling with REMS Picus DP and micro-pulse technology switched on, the micro- pulse technology adjusting ring (Fig. 10 (69)) can turn during drilling and switch off the micro-pulse. Switch off the drive unit in this case. Turn the micro-pulse technology adjusting ring (Fig. 10 (69)) to the detent position so that the red markings are in line. Continue drilling with increased thrust pressure. It is recommended to use a drill stand if the micro-pulse technology switches off repeatedly.

NOTICE
Always wet drilling with REMS universal diamond core drilling crowns and REMS universal diamond core drilling crowns LS for steel-reinforced concrete!
Always dry drilling with REMS dry diamond core drilling crowns LS with core drilling machines with micro-pulse technology. Suck off the resulting drilling dust with a suitable safety vacuum cleaner/dust extractor! Observe the national regulations.

3.2 Manually-controlled wet drilling REMS Picus S1, REMS Picus S3 andREMS Picus SR
WARNING
Use the counterholder (12) provided with the diamond core drilling machine for hand-held drilling. Losing control of the diamond core drilling machine can cause injuries. Always bear in mind that the diamond core drilling crown could block at any time. Never use stage 1 for hand-held drilling with REMS Picus SR. There is a risk of injury from the diamond core drilling machine being torn out of your hand and spinning round as the torque increases.
Screw the selected REMS universal diamond core drilling crown/REMS universal diamond core drilling crown LS onto the drive spindle (11) of the drive unit and lightly hand-tighten. There is no need to tighten it with a wrench. Connect the water supply (see 2.5.). Using the tapping tool (49) (see 2.4.1.). Hold the drive unit by the insulated grip surfaces of the motor handle (20) and the brace (12) and place the tapping tool in the centre of the desired core hole. Switch on the drive unit with safety inching switch (21).

WARNING
Use the counter-holder (12) delivered with the power tool for hand-held drilling. Losing control of the power tool can cause injuries. Always bear in mind that the diamond core drilling crown could block at any time. Never use stage 1 for hand-held drilling with REMS Picus SR. There is a risk of injury fromthe power tool being torn out of your hand and spinning round as the torque increases. The drive unit will then run out of control, and the unit must be shut down by unplugging it from the mains supply.
To make a tapping hole, drill until the diamond core drilling crown has bored to a depth of about 5 mm. Remove the tapping tool (49), using a SW 19 wrench if required. Adjust the pressure in the water supply system (15) to a point where there is a moderate, but constant, flow for water from the bore hole. Insuffi cient water pressure (where the waste material flows out of the bore hole as thick sludge rather than liquid) is as bad for the working effi ciency and service life of the diamond core drilling crown as is excessive water pressure, which causes completely clear water to flow out. Continue boring until the core-drilling operation is complete. Always hold the drive unit by the insulated grip surfaces to safely absorb torque surges (risk of injury!). Check to ensure correct stability. Carry out larger core-drilling operations with the drill upright. Suck up the drilling water preferably with a suitable dry and wet vacuum cleaner, e.g. REMS Pull L or REMS Pull M.

WARNING
Ensure that no water is allowed to get into the drive unit motor during operation. DANGER OF FATAL ACCIDENT!

WARNING
REMS Picus DP is delivered without a PRCD fault current circuit breaker and is suitable for dry drilling only. Wet drilling with, as well as connection of a water hose to the REMS Picus DP is not permitted. There is a danger of electric shock.

3.3 Ways of securing the drill upright
You are recommended to secure the drill upright without the drive unit anddiamond core drilling crown. The drill upright becomes top heavy when thedrive unit is attached. This makes the task of securing it more diffi cult.
3.3.1 Securing with plugs in concrete with knock-in anchor (fig. 5)
For core-drilling operations in concrete, the drill upright should be secured with a knock-in anchor (steel plug). Proceed as follows:
Mark plug hole for REMS Simplex 2 at distance of approx. 200 mm, for REMS Titan with clamping angle for REMS Picus S1, REMS Picus S3, REMS Picus SR and REMS Picus DP approx. 250 mm, for REMS Titan with Picus S2/3.5 approx. 290 mm from the centre of the core hole. Set plug hole Ø 15 mm, drilling depth approx. 55 mm. Clean the bore hole, hit the knock-in anchor (23) in with a hammer and spread with the flattener (24). Use only knock-in anchors of approved type (art. no. 079005). Observe approval! Screw the knurled threaded rod (25) into the knock-in anchor and tighten it by holding a tool such as a screw driver in the transverse hole of the knurled threaded rod. Turn the four adjustment screws (5) on the drill upright until they no longer protrude from the sole plate. Position the drill upright with slot (7) on the knurled threaded rod, while observing the desired position of the coredrilling operation. Fit the washer (26) to the knurled threaded rod and use an SW 30 wrench to secure the fasttightening nut (27). Turn all four adjustment screws (5) with the SW 19 wrench to compensate for irregularities in the ground surface. Take care to ensure that the locknuts do not prevent movement of the adjustment screws. Tighten the locknuts as required. Using the 4 adjustment screws (5) and the bull’s eye level ((56) accessory Art. No. 182010), the drill stand can be aligned to drill a right-angled hole.

3.3.2 Securing with plugs in masonry, with expansion anchor (anchor sleeve) (fig. 6)
For core-drilling operations in masonry, the drill upright should be secured with an expansion anchor (anchor sleeve).
Set plug hole Ø 20 mm, drilling depth approx. 85 mm. Clean the bore hole, and push the expansion anchor (28) with knurled threaded rod (25) into the hole. Screw the knurled threaded rod (25) fully home and tighten it by holding a tool such as a screwdriver in the transverse hole of the rod. Turn the four adjustment screws (5) on the drill upright until they no longer protrude from the sole plate. Position the drill upright with slot (7) on the knurled threaded rod, while observing the desired position of the core-drilling operation. Fit the washer (26) to the knurled threaded rod and use an SW 30 wrench to secure the fast-tightening nut (27). No. 182010), the drill stand can be aligned to drill a right- angled hole.
The expansion anchor can be removed after completion of the core-drilling operation for reuse elsewhere. To do so, turn the knurled threaded rod back by about 10 mm. A light tap on the knurled threaded rod will release the pin of the expansion anchor, allowing it to be removed.

3.3.3 Fastening in masonry with quick clamping set 500
In porous masonry it is to be expected that plug fastening of the drill stand will not be successful. In this case we recommend drilling completely through the wall with a drill diameter of 18 mm and fastening the drill stand with the quick clamping set 500 ((63) accessory art. no. 183607).

3.3.4 Securing with vacuum suction
The vacuum fastening is not approved for drilling with REMS Picus DP.
The drill stand can be held by a vacuum for core drilling in parts with a smooth surface (e.g. tiles, marble) in which no dowel pin fastening is possible. The vacuum fastening (accessory art. no. 183603) can only be used for REMS Titan. The suitability of the parts for vacuum fastening must be checked. Coated, laminated surfaces or tiles can come off. The vacuum fastening may only be used on regular or smooth surfaces and never on irregular, rough surfaces because otherwise the vacuum fastening can come loose and cause injuries. Proceed as follows:
Place the sealing ring (43) into the channel on the underside of the sole plate (6). Close off the slot (7) in the sole plate (6) with the cover plate with hose connection (42). Connect vacuum pump ((67) accessory art. no. 183670) to hose connection (41) and suck drill stand tightly to the base. Check the vacuum pressure constantly during drilling (pressure gauge). Observe the operating instructions of the vacuum pump used. Drill with low thrust pressure. The vacuum pump should be left switched on during drilling to prevent the drill stand accidentally coming loose.

3.3.5 Securing with a quick-action upright
The REMS Titan also offers the possibility of securing the drill upright between the floor and ceiling, or between two walls. This is done, for example, by placing a conventional quick-action upright or a 1¼” steel pipe between the grip head (29) of the drill upright and the ceiling/wall, and tightening it by holding a tool such as a screw driver in the transverse hole. Tighten the locknut (30).
Note that the quick-action upright or steel pipe must be aligned with the boring trestle, and that the threaded spindle (33) should be screwed by at least 20 mm into the thread of the boring trestle, and into the thread of the grip head, in order to guarantee a stable support. Use a piece of wood or metal to distribute the pressure force of the quick-action upright evenly on the ceiling or wall.

3.4 Dry-boring with drill upright
REMS Picus S1, REMS Picus S3 and REMS Picus SR
Secure the drill upright using one of the methods described in 3.3. Insert the drill collar (13) of the drive unit into the mounting in the clamping angle (10), and tighten the fillister head screw(s) (8) with an SW 6 hexa gon socket head wrench. Screw the selected REMS universal diamond core drilling crown/REMS universal diamond core drilling crown LS onto the drive spindle (11) of the drive unit and lightly hand-tighten. There is no need to tighten it with a wrench.
Use dust extraction and a suitable safety vacuum cleaner/dust extractor, e.g. REMS Pull M (see 2.4.2.). The diamond core drilling crown could be damaged by overheating if the dust produced by dry drilling is not sucked off. There is also a risk of injury when the drilling dust compressed in the gap blocks the diamond core drilling crown. If you have to work without dust extraction in finepored material, the diamond core drilling crown should be pulled back as often as possible and pushed forward again with a slight swing so that the drilling dust is pushed out of the drilling gap. Suitable safety equipment, e.g. respirator, disposable overalls, must be used. Observe the national regulations.
Switch on the drive unit with safety inching switch (21). For locking, the knob next to the safety switch (21) must be pressed with the safety switch (21) pressed down. Hold the diamond core drilling crown by the insulated grip surfaces, move forward slowly with the feed lever (4) and start tapping carefully. Once the diamond core drilling crown has engaged all-round, the feed rate can be increased. If the drive unit is stopped due to excessive feed pressure, or becomes blocked as a result of resistance in the drilling gap, the multi-function elec tronic system reduces the motor current – and thus the turning speed of the drive unit – to a minimum. The drive unit does not shut down how ever. As the feed pressure is reduced, the turning speed of the drive unit is increased once more. This procedure, even if it is repea ted several times in succession, prevents damage to the drive unit. If the motor remains stopped despite the reduction in feed pressure, the drive unit must be shut down and the diamond core drilling crown freed manually (see 5.).

REMS Picus S2/3,5
Loosen the two screws (52) on the flange of the REMS Titan, insert REMS Picus S2/3,5 in the guide (53). Hold the drive machine and tighten the screws (52). Tighten the locking nut. Screw the selected diamond core drill crown to the drive spindle (11) of the drive machine and tighten by hand with a slight swing. There is no need to use an open-ended wrench for tightening. Switch on the drive unit with the rocker switch (21a). REMS Picus DP
Fix the drill stand in one of the ways described in 3.3. N.B.: The vacuum fastening is not approved for drilling with REMS Picus DP. Insert the drill collar (13) of the drive unit into the mounting in the clamping angle (10) and tighten the fillister head screw(s) (8) with a size 6 Allen key. Screw the selected diamond core drilling crown onto the drive spindle (11) of the drive unit and lightly handtighten. There is no need to tighten it with an open- ended wrench. Switch on the micro-pulse technology. To do this, turn the micro-pulse technology adjusting ring (Fig. 10 (69)) to the detent position so that the red markings are in line. When drilling in masonry and other materials, the micro-pulse technology can be switched off by turning the micro-pulse technology adjusting ring (69) to the detent position so that the red markings are not in line.
Connect a suitable safety vacuum cleaner/dust extractor, e.g. REMS Pull M, to REMS Picus DP (see 2.4.2.). If the dust produced by dry drilling is not removed, the diamond core drilling crown may overheat and suffer damage. There is also a risk of injury when the drilling dust compressed in the gap blocks the diamond core drilling crown Observe the national regulations.

Hold the diamond core drilling crown by the insulated grip surfaces, move forward slowly with the feed lever (4) and start tapping carefully. It may be an advantage to switch off the micro-pulse technology for tapping. Once the diamond core drilling crown has engaged all-round, the feed rate can be increased If the drive unit is stopped due to excessive thrust pressure or becomes blocked as a result of resistance in the drilling gap, the multi-function electronic system reduces the motor current and thus the turning speed of the drive unit to a minimum. However, the drive unit does not switch off. If the thrust pressure is reduced, the turning speed of the drive unit increases again. This process does not damage the drive unit even if it is repeated several times. If the motor remains stopped despite the reduction in thrust pressure, the drive unit must be shut down and the diamond core drilling crown freed manually (see 5.).

When carrying out vertical drilling, e.g. in a ceiling, note that the drilling core normally drops out as soon as the hole is complete! Take appropriate steps to ensure that personal injury or material damage does not result.
If the drilling core remains hanging in the diamond core drilling crown after the core-drilling operation is complete, the bit must be unscrewed from the drive unit and the drilling core knocked out with a rod.

NOTICE
NEVER hit the casing of the drilling core with a metal item such as a hammer or wrench in order to loosen the drilling core. This will cause the casing pipe to become dented, which will make blocking of the drilling core even more likely on future occasions. The diamond core drilling crown may then be rendered unusable.
If the core-drilling operation does not penetrate fully, the drilling core can be broken up, down to a depth of 1.5 x Ø, by inserting a tool such as a chisel into the drilling gap. If the drilling core cannot be secured, use a tool such as a hammer drill to make an angled hole into the drilling core, and insert a rod to extract it.

3.7 Extending the diamond core drilling crown
If the stroke distance of the drill upright, or the useful drilling depth of the diamond core drilling crown, is insuffi cient, an annular-bit extension ((50) accessory art. no. 180155) should be used. Start by drilling in as far as possible in the normal way.
If the stroke distance of the drill upright, and boring depth within the usa ble boring depth of the diamond core drilling crown, are insufficient, proceed as follows:

WARNING
Unplug from the mains power supply! Do not pull the diamond core drilling crown out of the core-drilling hole. Detach the diamond core drilling crown from the drive unit (see 2.3.2.). Turn back the drive unit without the diamond core drilling crown. Fit the annular-bit exten sion ((50) accessory art. no. 180155) between the diamond core drilling crown and drive unit.
If the usable drilling depth of the diamond-tipped annular core is insufficient, proceed as follows:

WARNING
Unplug from the mains power supply!
Detach the diamond core drilling crown from the drive unit (see 2.3.2.). Turn back the drive unit without the diamond core drilling crown. Pull the diamond core drilling crown out of the core- drilling hole. Break up the drilling core (see 3.6.), and remove it from the core-drilling hole. Reinsert the diamond core drilling crown into the hole. Fit the annular-bit extension ((50) accessory art. no. 180155) between the diamond core drilling crown and drive unit.

Maintenance

Notwithstanding the maintenance described below, it is recommended to send in the power tool to an authorised REMS contract customer service workshop for inspection and periodic testing of electrical devices at least once a year. In Germany, such periodic testing of electrical devices should be performed in accordance with DIN VDE 0701-0702 and also prescribed for mobile electrical equipment according to the accident prevention rules DGUV, regulation 3 “Electrical Systems and Equipment”. In addition, the  respective national safety provisions, rules and regulations valid for the application site must be considered and observed.

4.1 Maintenance
WARNING
Pull out the mains plug before maintenance work!
Check the function of the PRCD fault current circuit breaker regularly (see 2.1.).
Keep the drive unit and handles clean. Clean the drill stand and diamond core drilling crown with water after finishing the drilling work. Blow out the air vents on the motor from time to time. Keep the drilling crown connecting thread on the drive unit and the connecting thread of the diamond core drilling crown clean and oil from time to time. Clean plastic parts (e.g. housing) only with REMS CleanM machine cleaner (Art. No. 140119) or a mild soap and a damp cloth. Do not use household cleaners. These often contain chemicals which can damage the plastic parts. Never use petrol, turpentine, thinner or similar products for cleaning.
Make sure that liquids never get onto or inside the electric diamond core drilling machine. Never immerse the electric diamond core drilling machine in liquid.

4.2 Inspection/Maintenance
WARNING
Pull out the mains plug before maintenance and repair work!
This work may only be performed by qualifi ed personnel.
The gear runs in a life-long grease filling and therefore needs no lubrication. The motors of REMS Picus S1, REMS Picus S3, REMS Picus S2/3.5, REMS Picus SR and REMS Picus DP have carbon brushes. These are subject to wear and must therefore by checked and changed by qualifi ed specialists or an authorised REMS customer service workshop from time to time.

Faults

NOTICE
Do not switch the drive unit on and off to loosen a jammed diamond core drilling crown!
5.1 Fault: Diamond core drilling crown jammed.
Cause:

  • Compressed drilling dust in dry drilling without dust extraction.

5.2 Fault: Diamond core drilling crown jams or has diffi culty cutting.
Cause:

  • Loose material or steel chips have jammed.
  • Drilling tube out of round or damaged.

Remedy:

  • Switch off the drive unit. Pull out the mains plug. Move the diamond core drilling crown to and fro with a size 41 open-ended wrench until it is freed again. Continue drilling carefully. Use a dust extractor or drill wet with REMS Picus S1, REMS Picus S3, REMS Picus S2/3.5 and REMS Picus SR.

Remedy:

  • Brake drilling core and remove loose parts.
  • Change diamond core drilling crown.

5.3 Fault: Diamond core drilling crown has diffi culty cutting.
Cause:

  • Wrong speed (REMS Picus S3, REMS Picus S2/3,5, REMS Picus SR).
  • Polished diamond segments.
  • Worn diamond segments.
  • Water pressure on the water supply device (15) not set correctly.

5.4 Fault: Diamond core drilling crown does not start drilling, slips to the side.
Cause:

  • Diamond core drilling crown applied too abruptly when starting drilling.
  • Drive unit not fixed sufficiently in the clamping bracket (10).
  • Damaged and untrue running diamond core drilling crown.
  • Drill stand not fixed securely.
  • Hand-held start drilling without start drilling aid (49).
  • Vibrations due to switched-on micro-pulse technology (REMS Picus DP).

5.5 Fault: Drilling core stuck in the diamond core drilling crown.
Cause:

  • Compressed drilling dust, parts of the drilling core jammed in the drilling tube.

5.6 Fault: Diamond core drilling crown is diffi cult to release from the drive spindle.
Cause:

  • Dirt, corrosion.

5.7 Fault: Diamond core drilling crown does not work.
Cause:

  • PRCD fault current circuit breaker (19) is not switched on.
  • Worn carbon brushes.
  • Mains lead/PRCD defective.
  • Diamond core drilling machine defective.

5.8 Fault: The micro-pulse technology of REMS Picus DP switches off during drilling.
Cause:

  • The feed rate during drilling is too low.

Remedy:

  • Set the speed accordingly, see 2.2.
  • Sharpen diamond segments. Drill 10 to 15 mm deep in sandstone, asphalt or a grinding stone ((55) accessory art. no. 079012) to do this.
  • Change diamond core drilling crown.
  • Set water pressure accordingly, see 3.2 or 3.5.

Remedy:

  • Start drilling with low feed.
  • Tighten cylinder head screws (8).
