Interesting facts

  • The taste of beverages containing coffee depends on the quality of the used coffee or espresso beans. A requirement for the aromatic preparation of beverages with coffee is the perfect grinding of the roasted beans as this is increasing the surface for the contact with water and thus, the release of fl avours. The degree of grinding also determines the pressure in the brewing chamber or the throughput time in a coffee fi lter machine.
  • After a few minutes already, the ground powder is losing more than 50 % of its fl avour. Therefore, coffee specialists recommend storing whole coffee beans and only grinding the quantity just needed.

Prior to initial use

ATTENTION: Remove possibly fi xed protective foils, promotional material and packaging material from appliance and accessories!
Clean the appliance as well as all accessory parts according to the cleaning notes in this manual (see “cleaning and maintenance“, page 26).

Features

  • Touch control sensors
    • The appliance is equipped with touch control sensors. The sensor keys can be operated easily and very conveniently. Tapping the sensor keys activates the respective function. Antistatic function
    • The appliance is equipped with an antistatic function. The air in the powder outlet channel is ionized by an ion generator, which significantly reduces the static charge. This function serves to ensure that no powder sticks to the container, outlet channel or measuring spoon.
  • Cone grinder with overload protection
    • The machine is equipped with a high-quality conical burr grinder. This allows whole beans to be ground in a particularly aroma-friendly manner.
    • To protect against damage caused by foreign bodies (e.g. small stones) in the coffee beans, the grinder is equipped with an electronic overload protection. If the grinder blois blocked, the grinding process is automatically stopped and the error message “E2” appears in the display. Remove the grinding plunger (see page 21) and remove the blockage in the grinding mechanism, then you can use the appliance again.
  • Standbymodus
    • The appliance is equipped with an energy-saving standby function which is activated after connecting the appliance to the mains. 2 minutes after the last operation (grinding, pressing a key), the unit automatically switches back to standby mode.
    • By pressing the ON/START/STOP key, the appliance changes back to the operation mode. Seal on the powder outlet channel
    • The appliance is equipped with a separate sealing on the powder outlet channel which provides a seal between the powder outlet channel and the powder container. Thus, no powder is lost during grinding.

Assembling and disassembling of the appliance

  • The backlighting of the sensor keys is active.
NOTE: If no further operation of a sensor key is performed within 2 minutes, the appliance automatically switches to standby mode. By tapping the ON/START/STOP sensor key, the appliance can be returned to operation mode.

Setting of the grinding degree
Different coffee beverages require a different grind. The type and roasting of the beans and your personal taste also determine how finely the coffee powder should be ground. Take our recommendations (see below) as a basis and try for yourself until you have found your individually suitable grind using the very variable setting options.

Setting Application
1 – 5 Extra-finely ground powder is recommended for automatic pump pressure

espresso machines.
6 – 12| Finely ground powder is espacially used in boiler espresso machines, espresso makers and “Moka” kettles (e.g. Bialetti).
13 – 22| Medium ground powder is suitable for filter coffee machines and for hand brew coffee.
23 – 35| Coarsely ground powder is suitable for piston pump coffee makers (”French Press“).

IMPORTANT: Only adjust the grinding degree when the beans container is full and the grinder is running!
NOTE: Keep in mind that a small amount of beans must be ground first before the result of the new setting is visible.

  •  By turning the built-in beans container to the right or left, the degree of grinding can be adjusted individually. If necessary, hold the unit with your free hand so that it does not slip.
  • Setting “1” means very fine powder, setting “35” means very coarse ground powder.
  • The set value is shown by the small arrow marking on the beans container and the printed scale on the base unit.

Setting of the powder portion
  • The strength of the coffee is influenced not only by the grind, but also by the amount of powder used. For a smoother coffee, the powder portion is reduced, for a stronger coffee, the powder portion is increased.
  • The amount of coffee powder dispensed depends on the type of bean, the roast and the set grinding degree. Therefore, the actual amount of powder required can deviate from the preset portion sizes. To best cover these deviations and personal preferences, the appliance offers two modes and a very finely graduated portion setting.
  • This coffee grinder can grind 1 – 12 servings of coffee powder.
  • The electronic fine adjustment allows the portion quantity of the ground powder to be precisely adjusted to individual needs.
  •  In addition, it is possible to select between the operating mode “Powder for coffee preparation” and “Powder for espresso preparation”.
  1. **Display at control panel

**ROMMELSBACHER-EKM-400-Coffee-Grinder-fig-9

  1. Operating mode “powder for coffee preparation“
This mode is ideal for use with fi lter coffee machines as well as French press pots and offers an adjustable range from 1 to 12 servings. The powder output is optimized for medium grinding degree. In the display fi eld, the “coffee bean” symbol lights up to the right of the number of the selected portion size.

ROMMELSBACHER-EKM-400-Coffee-Grinder-fig-10

  1. Operating mode “powder for espresso preparation“
This mode is specifically for the use of portafilter machines and offers an adjustable range from 1 to 2 portions. The powder output is optimized for fine grinds. In the display field, the “portafilter” symbol lights up to the right of the number of the selected portion size.

ROMMELSBACHER-EKM-400-Coffee-Grinder-fig-12

  1. **Electronic fine adjustment of portion size (example: 4 portions)

ROMMELSBACHER-EKM-400-Coffee-Grinder-fig-13
NOTE:** In the operating mode “powder for coffee preparation”, no fine adjustment of the powder quantity can be made for the portion sizes “10”, “11” and “12”.

  1. Changing portion size and operating mode

    • After reaching the maximum or minimum portion size, the operating mode is changed automatically.
The change of operating mode is confirmed with a 2-fold signal tone.

    • In the operating mode “powder for espresso preparation” (“1.0” to “2.9”), the setting “2.9” is followed by the minimum setting “1.0” of the operating mode “powder for coffee preparation” – and vice versa.

    • In the operating mode “powder for coffee preparation” (“1.0” to “12”), the setting “12” is followed by the minimum setting “1.0” of the operating mode “powder for espresso preparation” – and vice versa.
NOTE: The appliance saves the powder quantity setting selected the last. If you regularly grind with consistent coffee beans and the same amount of powder, you usually do not need to change this setting.

Start/stop the grinding process

  • By briefly touching the ON/START/STOP sensor key, you start the grinding process.
  • The selected setting is shown in the display field.
  • The backlighting of the ON/START/STOP sensor key is active.
  • After processing the set portion size, the appliance stops automatically and switches to operation mode.
    • The display field shows the last setting selected.
    • The backlighting of all sensor keys is active.
NOTE: If no further operation of a sensor button is carried out within 2 minutes, the appliance automatically switches to standby mode. By tapping the ON/START/STOP sensor button, the appliance can be switched back to operation mode.

Stop the grinding process prematurely

  • By briefly tapping the ON/START/STOP sensor button, the grinding process can be stopped prematurely.
  • The appliance stops the grinding process and returns to operation mode.
    • The last chosen setting is shown at the display.

Packaging material

  • Do not simply throw the packaging material away but recycle it.
  • Deliver paper, cardboard and corrugated cardboard to waste paper collection points. Also put plastic packaging material and foils into the specifi c collection containers.
  • The printed or embossed markings indicate the materials which were used: PE stands for polyethylene (code 02 means high-density PE, 04 stands for low-density PE), PS stands for polystyrene and CPE for chlorinated polyethylene. PAP 20 means corrugated cardboard and PAP 21 other cardboard. All plastics are thermoplastics which are very easy and effi cient to produce.
