Introduction

Thank you for purchasing the Optima Wheelchair.
The Optima has been designed and manufactured to meet our own high level of specifications and we hope you will be delighted with your purchase.

The Optima Wheelchair has been designed for use both indoors and outdoors and will take a maximum user weight of 115kg (18 stone). It is a self-propelled wheelchair and can be propelled by the wheelchair user using the rear wheel handrims or by an attendant/carer using the push handles at the rear. The Optima folds up to for ease of transportation and storage.

Assembly

The Optima Wheelchair will come fully assembled with the exception of the legrests. Simply take the wheelchair out of its packaging and pull the armrests apart, then push the seat base down until in the horizontal position.

The legrests then clip into the two fixings part way down the wheelchair legs and swing in towards the centre of the chair where they will click into place.

Folding

The Optima Wheelchair has been designed to fold for ease of transportation and storage. Ensure the footrests are in the forward position and flip the plastic footplates up. Whilst holding the two handles, pull upwards to fold the chair.

For transportation it is recommended that the legrests are removed by pushing the lever on the legrests and swinging away from the wheelchair. This will unlock the legrest and allow it to be removed by lifting upwards.

WARNING Do not push down on the handles to raise the front of the wheelchair as this could result in damage to your Optima Wheelchair. Use the stepper tube as described further on in this manual.

The backrest also has a half-folding back which can be used to make the Optima Wheelchair even more compact. Push the black paddle at the rear of the chair with your thumb whilst pulling the handle down.

Repeat on the paddle on the other side. To return the backrest to the upright position, simply push the two handles back up into the upright position until the backrest locks in place.

WARNING Do not push down on the handles to raise the front of the wheelchair as this could result in damage to your Optima Wheelchair. Use the stepper tube as described further on in this manual.

Stepper Tube and Kerbs

Mounting a Kerb – Approach the kerb head on. The attendant/carer pushes down with their foot on the stepper tube at the rear of the wheelchair to raise the front castors off the ground and on to the kerb.

The attendant/carer then pushes the wheelchair forward and lifts the rear of the wheelchair up onto the kerb.

Going down a Kerb – Approach the kerb head on. The attendant/carer pushes down with their foot on the stepper tube at the rear and gently lowers the front castors to the ground. The attendant/carer then pushes the wheelchair forward and gently lowers the rear castors to the ground.

Operation

  • The Optima Wheelchair can be propelled by the wheelchair user using the rear wheel handrims or by an attendant/carer using the push handles at the rear Parking brakes – push the plastic brake handle with your hand towards the front of the wheelchair. Pull the handle back to release the brakes.
  • Apply reverse pressure to the handrims or push handles to slow the wheelchair during operation.
  • Do not use on gradients larger than 10 degrees.
  • The Optima Wheelchair is only suitable for a single user.
  • Ensure feet are on footplates during operation.
  • Do not stand on the footplates.
  • Do not use on escalators.
  • Do not reverse down a gradient.
  • If you must stop on an incline, avoid sudden abrupt movements when you resume.
  • Do not reach for items further than your arm will extend.
  • Be aware of hazards in your region when operating.
  • Always apply parking brake when transferring into or out of the wheelchair.

Maintenance

Be sure your Optima Wheelchair is in proper working order at all times. Please contact CareCo for any repairs required.

  • Wipe down the frame using a soft cloth at least once a week.
  • If exposed to moisture, dry immediately.
  • Polish metal parts of the chair with auto wax once a month.
  • Clean the seat upholstery with a mild soap solution, rinse and wipe dry.
  • Worn or torn upholstery should be replaced promptly.
  • Inspect the wheels once a month – you can correct any side play in the wheel by loosening the lock nut on the axle and then tighten the axle to remove this movement.
  • If the Solid PU tyre becomes cracked or severely worn, replace immediately.

Warranty

Your CareCo branded product is under warranty to be free from defects in material and workmanship for one year from date of purchase. This warranty expresses our confidence in the workmanship and materials used for our products. In the event of a defect covered by this warranty, CareCo will, at our discretion, replace the wheelchair or supply parts to remedy. This warranty does not cover device failure due to owner misuse or negligence, or due to normal wear and tear. The warranty does not extend to non-durable parts, such as rubber accessories, castors, grips and arm pads, which are subject to normal wear and tear and require periodic replacement.
