How to test

  1. Check the code on the test strip vial

  2. Insert a test strip
Start with the meter off. Insert the test strip into the test port as shown. Make sure the three contact bars are facing you. Push the strip in as far as it will go. Do not bend the strip.

  3. Match the code displayed on the meter with the code on the test strip vial
If necessary, press or to change the code on the meter to match the code on your test strip vial.

  4. Get a drop of blood
Before testing, wash your hands and the puncture site. Rinse and dry. Use the lancing device and a new lancet to get a blood drop of at least one microliter ( ****actual size).

  5. Apply the blood drop and read the result
Touch and hold the drop of blood to the narrow channel in the top edge of the test strip. Keep holding the drop of blood to the top edge of the test strip until the confirmation window is full. If your sample does not fill the confirmation window on the first try, do not add more blood to that strip. Instead, test again with a new strip.
After your meter counts down from 5 to 1, your blood glucose level appears on the display, along with the unit of measure, and the date and time of the test.
WARNING: If mg/dL does not appear with the test result, contact Customer Service.
The following steps are optional. See your owner’s booklet for more information.

  6. Choose a meal flag
While viewing the result, press to display the MEAL FLAG screen. Use or to choose a meal flag, then press . The meal flag you chose will show above your test result.

While viewing the result, press to display the COMMENT screen. Use or to choose a comment, then press . The comment you chose will show below your test result.

What to do if test results are too high or too low

CAUTION: Low glucose results
If your test result is lower than 70 mg/dL or is shown as LOW GLUCOSE, it may mean hypoglycemia (low blood glucose). This may require immediate treatment according to your healthcare professional’s recommendations. Although this result could be due to a test error, it is safer to treat first, then do another test. You may also get false low results if you are severely dehydrated.

CAUTION: High glucose results
If your test result is higher than 180 mg/dL, it may mean hyperglycemia (high blood glucose). If you are uncertain about this test result, consider re- testing. Your healthcare professional can work with you to decide what actions, if any, you should take if your results are higher than 180 mg/dL. If your meter displays HIGH GLUCOSE, you may have a very high blood glucose level (severe hyperglycemia) exceeding 600 mg/dL. Re-check your glucose level. If the result is HIGH GLUCOSE again, obtain and follow instructions from your healthcare professional without delay.

CAUTION: If you test at the low end of the operating range (43˚F) and your glucose is high (over 180 mg/dL), the reading on your meter may be lower than your actual glucose. In this situation, repeat the test in a warmer environment with a new test strip as soon as possible.

Replacing batteries

Your OneTouch® Ultra® 2 Meter uses two 3.0 Volt CR 2032 lithium batteries (or equivalent)—one for the meter and one for the backlight. Replacement batteries can be found in most stores where batteries are sold.

WARNING: To avoid a possible shock, do not change either battery while the meter is connected to a computer with the OneTouch™ Interface Cable.

  1. Remove the old battery
Start with the meter off. Open the battery door and pull up on the battery ribbon. The white ribbon is for the meter battery, and the black ribbon is for the backlight battery.

  2. Insert the new battery
With the “+” side facing up toward you, place the battery in the compartment within the fold of the ribbon. Push the battery until it snaps into the battery clasp. Insert the two battery door tabs into the matching holes on the meter and push down until you hear the door click into place.

  3. Check your meter settings
Removing the meter battery will not affect your stored results. However, you may need to re-set your meter settings. See your owner’s booklet.

  4. Dispose of batteries according to your local environmental regulations

Understanding Error and Other Messages

Your meter displays messages when there are problems with the test strip, with the meter, or when your blood glucose levels are higher than 600 mg/dL or lower than 20 mg/dL. Here is what each message means:

  • “Meter battery does not have enough power to perform a test. You must replace the meter battery.” This means that the meter battery is low and needs to be replaced.
  • “No result in memory.” This means that there is no result stored in memory, either because it is the first time using the meter or after downloading all data to a computer.
  • “The meter has detected a problem with the test strip.” This means that there may be a problem with the test strip, such as damage or an incompletely filled confirmation window. Repeat the test with a new test strip.
  • “Meter battery is low but still has enough power to perform a test.” This means that the meter battery is low but still has enough power to perform a minimum of 100 more tests.
  • “Either a used test strip or a problem with the meter.” This means that there may be a problem with either the test strip or the meter itself. Repeat the test with a new test strip.
  • “The sample was applied before the meter was ready.” This means that the blood sample was applied before the meter was ready. Repeat the test with a new test strip and apply blood or control solution only after APPLY BLOOD or APPLY CONTROL appears on the display.
  • “You may have a very low blood glucose level, lower than 20 mg/dL.” This means that your blood glucose level may be very low and may require immediate treatment according to your healthcare professional’s recommendations.
  • “You may have a very high blood glucose level, over 600 mg/dL.” This means that your blood glucose level may be very high. Re-check your glucose level and obtain and follow instructions from your healthcare professional without delay.
  • “There is a problem with the meter.” This means that there is a problem with the meter and it should not be used. Contact Customer Service for assistance.
