Information about the prototype
As AC electrification of the ÈSD system progressed, so did the demand for suitable AC locomotives. To meet this demand, the class S499.02 was created in the mid-1970s as a further development of the class S499.0 “Laminatka” electric locomotive. On the new S499.02, the locomotive body was no longer made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic for cost reasons, but of steel. With the exception of the large air vents located on the side panels, the S499.02’s body resembled that of the class E469.3 DC locomotive. Between 1975 and 1981, 86 units entered service with ÈSD and were used in both freight and passenger service. During the 1980s, some of the locomotives were fitted with modern single-arm pantographs. In 1988 they were redesignated as class 242. Following the 1993 dissolution of Czechoslovakia, all class S499.02s went to the Czech Railways (ÈD) and are still in use there today. The delivery of S 499.0286 in 1981 marked the end of the delivery of ŠKODA first generation locomotives.
