Product Usage Instructions
Information about the Prototype:
The PIKO DAMPFLOKOMOTIVE BR 62 is a model inspired by the German Reichsbahn
locomotives developed in the late 1920s. These locomotives were initially used
for various purposes, with some specifically deployed on challenging routes
like the Werra line between Eisenach and Lichtenfels.
Safety Notes:
It is recommended to use non-resinous, acid-free PIKO Loco oil for
maintenance. The locomotive should run for approximately 25 minutes in each
direction to ensure optimal performance.
Additionally, changing the traction tyres regularly is essential for proper
traction.
Optimal Operation Recommendations:
To enhance the performance of the model with the smoke generator or smoke
insert, PIKO suggests using their steam distillate product (#56162) for
optimal results.
Assignment of PluX Interface:
The PluX interface allows for various functions to be controlled. For
example, F0f/F0r controls the white headlights at the front and rear, AUX1 and
AUX2 manage train end lights, AUX3 controls the driver cab light, and AUX6
simulates firebox flicker.
Additionally, AUX7 is dedicated to the smoke generator function, which may
vary depending on the model version. GPIO-B is used for chassis lighting.
FAQ:
-
Q: What type of oil should be used for maintenance?
A: PIKO recommends using non-resinous, acid-free PIKO Loco oil for maintenance purposes. -
Q: How long should the locomotive run in each direction?
A: It is recommended to run the locomotive for approximately 25 minutes in each direction for optimal performance.
The prototype:
The BR 62 was the result of efforts by the Reichsbahn Central Office to
develop a series of multipurpose standard locomotives. Based on the BR 20
(which was never built), engineers designed a fast two-cylinder superheated
steam locomotive with a 4-6-4T wheel arrangement. A contract to build the
engines was awarded to the Henschel company, who in 1928 completed fifteen
locomotives. Initially, the DRG took delivery of just 62 001 and 62 002 and
used them in the Ruhr area. The remaining 13 engines were not put into service
until 1932.
Soon after, they found their natural home on the demanding Werra Railroad
between Eisenach and Lichtenfels. Following the Second World War, seven
engines remained in the western zones while eight remained in the East. The
Deutsche Bundesbahn restored it’s BR 62s to operational condition in 1949 and
used them in commuter service in the Ruhr area until 1956. In 1972, engine 62
1007-4 was the last of its kind to retire from scheduled service. Today 62 015
can be seen as a museum locomotive in Dresden.

This is a Model, not a Toy!
Please keep the enclosed manual for future reference!
Attention! Due to the nature of its construction, this product contains
some functional sharp edges! If used incorrectly there is a possibility of
danger.
- This model should only be operated using an approved transformer marked as follows :
- Alternating current: max. Load: 16 V ~ ,
- Commutation tension: 24 V ~
- Direct voltage: max. Driving tension: 12 V
If used frequently, oil the wheelsets with a drop of non-resinous, acid-free PIKO Loco oil! In order to achieve the best possible running and traction properties, it is advisable to run the locomotive in for 25 minutes forwards and 25 minutes in reverse without load. Clean rails are essential for good performance.

To optimally operate the model with the smoke generator or smoke insert developed by PIKO, we we recommend the PIKO steam distillate:
Assignment of PluX interface
- F0f / F0r – white headlight front and rear
- AUX1 – Train end light rear
- AUX2 – Train end light front
- AUX3 – Driver cab light
- AUX6 – Firebox flicker
- AUX7 – Smoke generator*
- GPIO-B – Chassis light
- version-dependent
Note only for DC version:
With this locomotive interference will not occur if the condenser normally
fitted in the track connection section has a minimum capacity of 680 nano
farads.
