WARNING! Risk of electric shock
Incorrect installation could be dangerous or illegal. You might need to turn off multiple breakers/fuses for safe installation. Please call a professional electrician if you are unfamiliar or uncomfortable with electrical work
-
Turn off the power
-
Shut off power to the switch you’re replacing at your fuse panel or circuit breaker
Confirm that power is off -
Remove the cover plate from the existing switch.
-
Use a voltage tester to test BOTH sides of the switch. You may need to turn off more than one circuit breaker/fuse
-
Pull out existing switch
-
Unscrew the switch and gently pull it out of the wall.
-
Do not remove any of the wires yet
Pro Tip:
Take a picture of the wires in your wall to refer back to later -
Look for NEUTRAL wires
NEUTRAL wires are usually white. If you have them, we will direct you to connect them later in step 7. If you don’t have them, your house is not compatible with Wemo Smart Light Switch.
Note:
You may have a different number of neutral wires than shown.
Test the NEUTRAL wires
Use a voltage tester to check that there is no power in the NEUTRAL wires from neighboring circuits. If necessary, shut off additional circuits until no voltage is found -
Identify your existing switch
Single pole
If one switch controls one light, it is a single-pole switch
3-way
If two switches control the same light, they are both 3-way switches
4-way
If three switches control the same light, the one with 5 screws is a 4-way switch. The other two are 3-way switches.
Follow 3-way installation instructions
Wemo Smart Light Switch cannot replace a 4-way switch -
Remove existing switch
Disconnect the LINE and LOAD wires (usually black) from the existing light switch.
Note : Your existing switch, wires, and electrical box may look different and have different colors
