Assemble Your Supplies
Clipper, oil, blades, slicker brush, attachment combs and comb, scissors, tear-free shampoo, dryer, rubber bath mat, nail cutters. Be sure all your equipment is in good working condition and easy to reach. Grooming should be done on a solid table (about 30” high) with a non-slip surface to give your dog a steady and secure footing. A grooming post to secure the dog would be of considerable aid. Good lighting is essential. The light should be adequately bright and evenly distributed; there should be no shadows.
TIPS FOR ALL BREEDS OF DOG
- Before clipping your dog for the first time, run the clipper near the dog’s ear for a short time so he gets used to the noise.
- If clipping for the first time, the clipping process will be slow. Try to move with the dog when clipping. After a few grooming sessions, you will develop your own comfortable style and grooming will go faster.
- Take your time when grooming, and use a lot of affection. Dogs know when you’re in a hurry and will react by getting nervous, making grooming more difficult.
- It is very important to trim out excess hair on the pads. Otherwise, the pads will become dirty and matted, causing painful walking for the dog.
BEFORE YOU CUT
Brush out the coat thoroughly
- Remove all snarls, knots, tangles, and mats.
- Part the hair and brush on 1” sections-brush from the skin out.
BATH TIME
- Soak the dog thoroughly.
- Apply shampoo and work into a good lather.
- Pay particular attention to the rectum and pads (bottom of the paws).
- Be careful also not to get soap in the dog’s eyes (for safety use a “tear-free” shampoo).
- Rinse very thoroughly.
- Towel dry
- Fluff dry or brush and dry.
- Start with the legs using a wire brush and move up to the body.
- Direct the dryer to the area you are brushing. Do one spot at a time.
- Use light, fluffing strokes.
- There should be no snags or tangles when you are done.
GUIDE COMBS
Adding a guide comb to your clipper allows you to cut hair at even lengths. Cutting against the grain of the hair with a guide comb will give you a shorter cut, then cutting with the grain of the hair.
ATTACHING GUIDE COMBS
- Shut the clipper off, and if your clipper has a taper lever, adjust the lever to the “Fine” position.
- Holding Blade Attachment in the palm of the hand, snap side spring clips on the bottom blade.
- Slide Blade Attachment into place.
- BE SURE the Blade Attachment is in the correct installed position before operating the clipper. The blades can be severely damaged if the Blade Attachment is allowed to enter the operating clipper blade teeth.
CUTTING HAIR
The first time you cut hair, cut only a small amount until you become accustomed to how long each guide leaves the hair. Depending on your model, the following guide combs may be included in your kit. Always start by placing the largest guide comb on the clipper, then use shorter combs if the desired length is shorter.
- Guide Comb #3—leaves hair approx. 3/8”
- Guide Comb #4—leaves hair approx. 1/2”
- Guide Comb #7—leaves hair approx. 3/4”
- Guide Comb #8—leaves hair approx. 1”
To attach combs, hold comb with teeth up and snap it firmly to the bottom of the clipper blade. For uniform cutting, allow the clipper to cut its way through the hair. Do not force it through at a faster rate.
REMOVING GUIDE COMBS
- Shut clipper off and slide Blade Adjustment forward.
- Pivot Blade Attachment away from blade teeth and off.
CLIPPER USE, MAINTENANCE & STORAGE
-
It is normal for the unit to become somewhat warm during normal use.
-
Avoid pressing the blades strongly against the skin, being especially careful around the ears. (The blades should be directed toward the skin at a right angle, but without significant pressure.)
-
After cutting hair, clean the blades and oil clipper before storing the unit. Place a small drop of WAHL CLIPPER OIL ONLY on the ends of the blades while the clipper is running.
-
To clean the body of the unit, use either a clean, dry, or dampened cloth. DO NOT USE benzene or thinner to clean the unit.
-
Do not store the clipper in a wet or moist environment.
-
To prolong blade life, do not use clippers on dirty coats.
-
Do not try to repair any internal mechanisms. If the unit should need repair, return it to Wahl Clipper Corporation.
-
Keep the cord untwisted and unobstructed. When stored, the cord should be coiled and the unit placed in a dry place, away from children.
-
Use only the power source specified on the rating plate.
-
The cutting blades furnished with Pet Clippers are made of a special high carbon steel scientifically heat treated for correct hardness. Years of experience have created a special process for grinding these blades to a super sharpness.
-
Be careful not to drop the clipper or to “nick” the blades.
-
Always replace the blade guard when the clipper is not in use. This will help prevent accidental damage and blade dulling.
-
Periodically dip the blade in a shallow pan of Wahl Clipper Oil (with the clipper running) to flush out dirt and hair particles.
-
Feed clipper through the hair only as fast as it will cut. Feeding too fast wedges the hair clippings between the blades, keeping them from cutting properly. DO NOT CUT WET HAIR.
-
Keep your clipper blades sharp. Clip only clean animals. FOREIGN PARTICLES are the major cause of dull blades. Sharp clipper blades cut better and faster. FOR GENUINE FACTORY BLADE SHARPENING, see General Facts & Maintenance. NEW REPLACEMENT BLADES are available from your Wahl products outlet. It is recommended that you order an extra Wahl Regular Blade as a “spare” so that you will always have a sharp clipper blade on hand.
BLADE MAINTENANCE
OIL
The blades on your new clipper should be oiled every few haircuts. For the
best results, place three drops on front of each blade and one drop on each
side of the blade as shown. Use only Wahl Clipper oil (a small bottle is
included in this kit, additional oil can be purchased separately, see
www.groomingWahl.com for detail). DO NOT USE
HAIR OIL, GREASE, OR ANY OIL MIXED WITH KEROSENE OR ANY SOLVENT. Oiling the
blades performs two, distinct functions:
- Provides a low friction, very thin film lubricant between the cutting blades so that they can take a full cutting stroke without becoming hot from frictional heat.
- Flushes abrasive particles and hairs out from between the blades.
NOTE: If you cut into dirt, immediately wash the blades with oil to flush it out. If your model contains one, working the tapering lever back and forth will assist in removing the dirt particles. Do not try to sharpen the clipper blades. Once they become dull, special equipment is needed to resharpen the blades. Also, never wash the blades in water. If you determine the blades need resharpening, you can return them to Wahl Clipper Corp. for resharpening. (See page 11 for service address). A nominal fee will be charged for resharpening. To remove cutting blades for sharpening or replacement, loosen and remove the 2 screws on bottom blade. Or if your clipper contains detachable blades, see “removing & cleaning detachable blades” for removal and follow the packing instructions. You will replace the same and retighten. Packing: remove the blades from the clipper, pack each blade individually in soft wrapping paper, enclose both blades in a durable container.
NON-DETACHABLE BLADES
BLADE ALIGNMENT
- If your clipper has a taper lever – position the taper lever in the close-cut position.
- The end of the top blade teeth should be approximately 1/32” (.64mm) back from the bottom blade.
- This is important so that the clipper does not cut too close or allow the moving cutter to touch the skin.
- The extreme left-hand tooth of the top blade must be covered or to the left of the first small tooth of the bottom blade.
- The extreme right-hand tooth of the top blade must be touching the big tooth on the bottom blade.
- If blade alignment is incorrect, add a few drops of oil to the blades, turn the clipper “ON” for a few moments, turn “OFF” and unplug. Loosen screws slightly and adjust. Tighten screws after blades are aligned.
DETACHABLE BLADES
REMOVING DETACHABLE BLADES
Some Wahl Clippers are equipped with detachable blades. To remove the blades, hold the clipper firmly in one hand. Using the thumb of your other hand, simply push the blades away from the front of the clipper. The blades and the mounting plate behind them will all come off in one piece.
REATTACHING DETACHABLE BLADES
To replace the blades, place the hook at the bottom of the blade set into the space provided on the clipper housing. Then pivot the blade set toward the housing until it snaps into place. Once it is seated, snap blade set to case so that you hear a click.
RECHARGEABLE
CHARGING
Some clippers will have a charging indicator light that will glow when your
clipper is in the “OFF” position and connected to its charger. The clipper
cannot be overcharged, so you may charge it as often as desired. We recommend
that the battery be “worked” or discharged by clipping without the cord and by
not recharging after every use.
BATTERY TYPE: NICKEL METAL HYDRIDE:
CHARGING
- Before use, the clipper must be fully charged for 24 hours, it will take 12 to 15 hours to charge your clipper with completely discharged batteries.
- A fully charged clipper will deliver up to 60 minutes of continuous trimming.
- After use, move the switch to the “O – OFF” (CHARGE) position. Reconnect the clipper to the transformer cord and recharge batteries by connecting the wall plug transformer into any convenient electrical outlet.
- Should you need to use the clipper in corded mode when the battery is fully discharged, it is best to charge the clipper in “O – OFF” position for several minutes before use. During use, you may notice a decrease in blade speed. This is perfectly normal. The clipper will still perform adequately in corded mode with a fully discharged battery.
- Connect the clipper to the transformer cord, and plug the wall transformer into an electrical outlet.
- Move the switch to the “1 – ON” position.
- After use, turn to the “O – OFF” position then disconnect the wall transformer from the outlet.
NiMD/NiCAD BATTERY REPLACEMENT, CLIPPER DISPOSAL & RECYCLING
- For battery replacement send the entire, intact clipper unity to: Wahl Annex 3001 North Locust, P.O. Box 578, Sterling, IL 61081
- Do not attempt to remove the battery.
- If you choose not to replace the battery, the entire, intact clipper unit must be disposed of. Do not attempt to remove the battery for disposal. Many locations prohibit disposal in standard waste receptacles. Check your local laws and regulations.

GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS
For an appliance that is equipped with a grounded plug, this appliance should
be grounded. In the event of an electrical short circuit, grounding reduces
the risk of electric shock by providing an escape wire for the electric
current. This appliance is equipped with a cord having a grounding wire with
an appropriate grounding plug. The plug must be plugged into an outlet that is
properly installed and grounded in accordance with all local codes and
ordinances.
DANGER – Improper use of the grounding plug can result in a risk of
electric shock. If repair or replacement of the cord or plug is necessary, do
not connect the grounding wire to either flat-blade terminal. The wire with
insulation having an outer surface that is green with or without yellow
stripes is the grounding wire.
Check with a qualified electrician or serviceman if the grounding instructions
are not completely understood, or if in doubt as to whether the appliance is
properly grounded. Do not modify the plug provided; if it will not fit the
outlet, have the proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician.
This appliance is for use on a nominal 120-V circuit and has a grounding plug
that looks like the plug illustrated in sketch A in Figure 60.1. A temporary
adapter, which looks like the adapter illustrated in sketches B and C, may be
used to connect this plug to a 2-pole receptacle as shown in sketch B if a
properly grounded outlet is not available. The temporary adapter should be
used only until a properly grounded outlet (sketch A) can be installed by a
qualified electrician. The green-colored rigid ear, lug, or the like extending
from the adapter must be connected to a permanent ground such as a properly
grounded outlet-box cover. Whenever the adapter is used, it must be held in
place by a metal screw.

FAQs
Why is my dog’s hair standing up?****
This is called “tenting”. The hair is standing up because the skin is warm and moist. This is a good time to clip, as the hair will not be matted when it dries.
Why does my dog’s coat look dull?****
If the coat looks dull, it may be dirty or matted. Brush out the coat thoroughly before clipping.
Why does my dog’s coat look thin?****
If your dog’s coat looks thin, it may be that he has been clipped too short. A well-groomed dog has a thick, full coat that ends at the skin.
Why does my dog have bald spots?****
If your dog has bald spots, it may be that he has been clipped too short or he has been in a fight with another animal. The bald spots will grow back in time if they are not too large. It could also be a sign of mange (a disease caused by mites). Check with your veterinarian if you think this may be the case.
How do you maintain dog grooming clippers?****
If you would like more lubrication, you can also place one drop in the centre of the blades’ intersection. Use a brush to get rid of as much hair as you can to clean your blade. Put your blades in a blade wash and let them soak. After that, thoroughly wipe the blade to prevent rusting.
How often should you replace dog clipper blades?****
Replace your blade drive every three to four months, or more often if you observe wear, if you are a professional groomer who grooms between four and five dogs each day. It is advised to change your blade drive every 6 to 12 months for a home groomer who grooms seldom, or as soon as you see wear.
Why do dog clippers get hot quickly?****
The dry blade guide and faster clippers are the main contributors to blade heat. After the blade has been running for a time, the sprays also leave a sticky residue. The spray is getting re-sticky when the blade starts to slow down and stop cutting.
What angle do you hold dog clippers?****
When trimming your pet’s nails, angle the clippers at a 45-degree angle. Cut swiftly and forcefully. You might not entirely cut the nail if you are too tentative, in which case you will have to restart the procedure.
Why do dog clippers stop cutting?****
Your clipper or trimmer blades may become dull and worn after repeated uses. Corrosion, scrapes, or general wear are possible causes of this. Your blades’ capacity to cut is therefore diminished because the cutter comb on your blades no longer has sharp cutting edges.
How long do dog clippers last?****
It has to be re-sharpened if you notice that the clipper blade is snagging and pulling on the coat. According to a general guideline, if you regularly clean and oil your blades, a dog blade will last between 10 and 12 weeks based on clipping 5 dogs each day.
Do you use dog clippers on wet or dry hair?****
To avoid accidentally cutting your dog if she moves quickly, Benesch advised always beginning with a dry, clean dog and only trimming the tips of sharp shears on your dog’s feet, face, and tail.
