Additional safety warnings

Safety instructions for all saws
Sawing method

  • a. DANGER: Keep your hands away from the cutting area and the saw blade. Hold the extra handle or the motor housing with your second hand. If both hands are holding the saw, they cannot be injured by the saw blade.

  • b. Do not reach under the work piece.
The protective hood cannot protect you from the saw blade under the work piece.

  • c. Adjust the cutting depth to the thick-ness of the work piece. Less than a full tooth length should be visible under the work piece.

  • d. Never hold the work piece you intend to cut with your hand or over your leg. Secure the work piece on a stable holder. It is important that you secure the work piece to minimise the risk of contact with your body, the saw blade getting clamped or loss of control.

  • e. Hold the power tool by the insulated gripping surfaces when performing work where there is a risk of the fitted tool coming into contact with hidden power lines or its own mains cord. Contact with a live line also electrifies the metal parts of the power tool and inflicts an electrical shock.

  • f. Always use a guide or a straight edge guide when performing lengthwise cuts. This improves the accuracy of the cut and reduces the risk of the saw blade catching.

  • g. Always use saw blades of the right size with the correct mounting hole (e.g. star-shaped or round). Saw blades that do not fit the parts mounted on the saw will not rotate smoothly and result in a loss of control.

  • h. Never use damaged or incorrect saw blade washers or screws. The saw blade washers and screws were spe-cially designed for your saw to deliver top performance and operating safety.

Additional safety instructions for all saws Kickback – causes and relevant safety instructions
Kickback is a sudden reaction occurring when a saw blade catches, jams or is incor-rectly aligned causing it to lift out of the work piece uncontrollably and move towards the operator;

  • if the saw blade catches or jams in a narrowing saw gap, it will be locked and the motor power kicks the saw back towards the operator;
  • if the saw blade cants or is improperly aligned in the saw gap, the teeth of the rear saw blade edge could catch in the surface of the work piece causing the saw blade to move out of the saw gap and the saw to kick back towards the operator.

Kickback is the result of incorrect or improper use of the saw. It can be prevented by taking suitable precautions like those described below.

  • a. Hold the saw firmly with both hands and position your arms so that you are able to control any kickback forces. Always keep to the side of the saw blade and never bring the saw blade in line with your body. In the event of a kickback, the circular saw could jerk backwards; however, the operator can control the kickback forces by taking suitable precautions.

  • b. If the saw blade catches or you sus-pend work, switch the saw off and hold it steady in the work piece until the saw blade has come to a complete stop. Never attempt to take the saw out of the work piece or to pull it back-wards while the saw blade is moving. Otherwise kickback may result. Deter-mine and rectify the cause that led to the saw blade getting caught.

  • c. If you would like to restart a saw in a work piece, centre the saw blade in the saw gap and ensure that the saw teeth are not caught in the work piece. If the saw blade is caught, it could jerk out of the work piece or kick back when the saw is restarted.

  • d. Support large boards to reduce the risk of kickback if the saw blade gets caught. Large boards could bend under their own weight. Boards must be sup-ported on both sides both near the saw gap and along the edge.

  • e. Do not use any dull or damaged saw blades. Saw blades with dull or incor-rectly aligned teeth lead to increased friction, the saw blade catching and kickback due to the excessively narrow saw gap.

  • f. Before cutting, tighten the cutting depth and cutting angle adjustments. If the settings change while cutting, the saw blade could catch and kick back.

  • g. Be particularly careful when cutting into existing walls or other areas where you do not have a complete overview. The saw blade cutting into the material could jam in hidden objects and kick back.

  • h. Never position your hand near rotating fitted tools. The fitted tool may move over your hand during kickback.

  • i. Avoid the area in front of and behind the rotating cutting disc. The kickback will direct the power tool in the direction opposite the movement of the grinding wheel at the point where it jams.

  • j. Be very cautious when working around corners, sharp edges etc. Ensure that the fitted tools do not kick back from the work piece and catch in it. The rotating fitted tool is at risk of catching around corners, sharp edges or in the event of impacts. This will result in a loss of control or kickback.

  • k. Do not use any chain saw blade or toothed saw blade or a segmented diamond cutting disc with slot widths of more than 10 mm. Such fitted tools often cause kickback or a loss of con-trol over the power tool.

  • l. Avoid jamming the cutting disc or applying to much pressure to it. Do not perform any excessively deep cuts. Overloading the cutting disc will increase the stress on it and make it susceptible to canting or jamming, which could cause it to kick back or the grinding tool to break.

  • m. Do not switch the power tool back on while it is still in the work piece. First allow the cutting disc to reach its full speed before you carefully continue cutting with it. Otherwise the disc could catch, jerk out of the work piece or cause kickback.

  • n. Warning! Inhaling or contact with resulting dust is hazardous for the operator as well as nearby persons.
Therefore avoid cutting through harm-ful/toxic materials such as paint coats containing lead, some types of wood and metal and use a dust extractor as well as personal protective equipment such as a dust mask.

  • o. Always wear ear protection.

  • p. Hold the device by the insulated grip-ping surfaces as the cutting disc could come into contact with its own mains cable. Damaging a live line could also energise metallic parts of the device and inflict an electric shock.

Safety instructions for this precision plunge saw

Safety instructions for saws with a protec-tive hood

  • a. Check whether the protective hood can be properly closed before each use. Do not use the saw if the protec-tive hood cannot be moved freely and does not close immediately. Never clamp or tie the protective hood in place as the saw blade would not be protected as a result. If the saw acci-dentally falls on the ground, the protec-tive hood could be bent. Make sure that the protective hood moves freely and does not touch either the saw blade or other parts at all cutting angles and depths.
  • b. Check the condition and function of the spring for the protective hood. Before use, have maintenance per-formed on the saw if the protective hood and spring are not working prop-erly. Damaged parts, sticky deposits or any buildup of chips will delay the effec-tiveness of the bottom protective hood.
  • c. When “plunge cutting” at angles other than a right angle, secure the base plate of the saw to prevent it from sliding to the side. If it slides to the side, the saw blade can catch resulting in kickback.
  • d. Do not set the saw down on the work bench or the ground without the pro-tective hood covering the saw blade. A saw blade that is not protected and still rotating will move the saw against the direction of cutting and will cut through whatever is in its way. Note the time the saw needs to come to a stop in the process.
  • e. Do not use grinding wheels for cutting.
  • f. Only use saw blades with diameters corresponding to the labels on the saw.
  • g. Always use a suitable dust extractor when cutting wood.
  • h. Always wear a dust mask when cutting wood.
  • i. Only use the saw blades recommended by the manufacturer.
  • j. Always wear ear protection.
  • k. When cutting through plastic, avoid overheating the tips of the saw teeth and melting the plastic.

Safety instructions for cut-off  grinding applications

Safety instructions for cutting-off machines

  • a. The protective hood belonging to the power tool must be securely mounted and set so that it provides maximum safety, that is, the smallest possible portion of the grinding tool facing the operator is exposed. Make sure that you and nearby persons are not in line with the rotating grinding wheel. The protective hood should protect the oper-ator from fragments and accidental contact with the grinding tool.

  • b. Only use bonded, reinforced or dia-mond-set cutting discs for your power tool. Securing the accessories on your power tool is no guarantee for safe use.

  • c. The permissible speed of the fitted tool must be at least as high as the maximum speed specified on the power tool. Accessories that rotate faster than permissible may break and be projected.

  • d. Grinding tools may only be used for the recommended applications. For example: Never grind using the side of a cutting disc. Cutting discs are intended for removing material using the edge of the disc. Forces acting on the side of the grinding tool could shat-ter it.

  • e. Always use an undamaged clamping flange of the correct size and shape to secure the grinding wheel of your choice. Suitable flanges support the grinding wheel and reduce the risk of the grinding wheel breaking.

  • f. Do not use worn grinding wheels from larger power tools. Grinding wheels for larger power tools are not designed to handle the higher speeds of smaller power tools and could break as a result.

  • g. The outer diameter and thickness of the fitted tool must correspond to the measurements of your power tool. Incorrectly dimensioned fitted tools can not be adequately shielded or controlled.
    h. Grinding wheels and flanges must fit the grinding spindle of your power tool perfectly. Fitted tools that do not fit the grinding spindle of the power tool exactly will rotate unevenly, vibrate sig-nificantly and may result in a loss of control.

  • i. Do not use any damaged grinding wheels. Check the grinding wheels for splinters and cracks before each use. If the power tool or the grinding wheel is dropped, check whether it is dam-aged or use a grinding wheel that is not damaged. If you have checked the grinding wheel and fitted it, ensure that you and nearby persons are not in line with the rotating grinding wheel and let the device run at full speed for one minute. In most cases, damaged grinding wheels will break during this test period.

  • j. Wear personal protective gear. Depend-ing on the application, wear full facial protection, eye protection or protective goggles. If appropriate, wear a dust mask, ear protection, protective gloves or a special apron to keep ground parti-cles and other material particles away from you. Your eyes should be protected from projected debris produced in con-nection with different applications. The dust or protective breathing mask must filter out dust produced during the respective application. If you are exposed to excessive noise, you could suffer hearing loss.

  • k. Make sure that other persons are at a safe distance to your work area. Anyone entering the work area must wear per-sonal protective gear. Fragments of the work piece or broken fitted tools could be projected and inflict injury both within and outside of the direct work area.

  • l. Only hold the device by the insulated gripping surfaces when performing an operation where the fitted tool may come into contact with hidden power lines or its own mains cord. A cutting accessory contacting a “live” wire may make exposed metal parts of the power tool “live” and could give the operator an electric shock.

  • m. Never set the power tool down before the fitted tool has come to a complete stop. The rotating fitted tool could come into contact with the surface of the base and you could lose control of the power tool.

  • n. Never allow the power tool to run while you are carrying it. Your clothing could accidentally come into contact with the rotating fitted tool and the fitted tool could be driven into your body.

  • o. Clean the vents of your power tool regularly. The motor fan will draw dust into the housing; if a large amount of metal dust accumulates, it could pose electrical hazards.

  • p. Do not store the power tool near flam-mable materials. Sparks could ignite these materials.

  • q. Do not use any fitted tools that require liquid coolants. Using water or other liquid coolants could cause an electrical shock.

Safety instructions for handling saw blades

  • a. Only use fitted tools if you are able to use them in a controlled manner.
  • b. Observe the maximum speed. The maximum speed specified on the fitted tool must not be exceeded. Only use fitted tools whose specified maximum speed is larger than the max. speed of the product.
  • c. Do not use any fitted tools that are cracked. Dispose of any cracked fitted tools. It is not permissible to repair them.
  • d. Clean any dirt, oil, grease and water off of the clamping surfaces.
  • e. It is not permitted to use loose reducing rings or bushings to reduce bore holes in circular saw blades.
  • f. Make sure that fixed reducing rings for securing the fitted tool have the same diameter and are at least ¹⁄₃ of the cut-ting diameter.
  • g. Make sure that fixed reducing rings are parallel to one another.
  • h. Handle the fitted tools carefully. Ideally, you should store them in the original packaging or special containers. Wear protective gloves for better grip and to further reduce the risk of injury.
  • i. Before using fitted tools, make sure that all protective devices are properly secured.
  • j. Before use, make sure that the fitted tool complies with the technical require-ments of this power tool and that it is properly secured.
  • k. Only use the enclosed saw blade for cutting wood and never use it to cut metals.

Safety instructions for diamond cutting discs

Connecting the dust extractor

WARNING!Risk of injury!

Harmful/toxic dust can be produced when working on e.g. paint coats containing lead and some types of wood. They pose a dan-ger for both the user and nearby persons.

  • If you cut materials that could produce hazardous dust, always use a dust extractor. This also applies, among other things, to hard woods, MDF pan-els and ceramics.
  • Protect yourself by wearing suitable personal protective equipment and keep other persons away from the work area.

Risk of damage!
Using a vacuum cleaner that is not suitable for use in combination with the power tool could damage the vacuum cleaner.

  • Make sure that the vacuum cleaner is suitable for use with the power tool. Dust extraction is particularly reasonable when performing multiple consecutive cuts. Breaks for cleaning the product and the work area are thus not needed as frequently.
Connecting a dust extractor makes it possi-ble to vacuum dust and chips off the work piece. This will protect both the product and your own health.

This will also keep your work area clean and safe.
Most dry vacuum cleaners designed for household use are suitable for dust extraction.

  1. Connect the dust suction hose (20) to the dust extraction connection (15) (see Fig. E).BATAVIA-PACK-18-V-Cordless-Mini-Circular-Saw-fig 5
  2. Connect a suitable dust extraction device (e.g. vacuum cleaner).

Setting the cutting depth

  1. Release the cutting depth limiter (7) .
  2. Set the cutting depth in millimetres according to the cutting depth scale
    (17) and fix the cutting depth limiter in place again.

The cutting depth must be slightly greater than the material thickness with wood and plastic.
For better cutting results, you can use a wood base. However, the wood base will be damaged while cutting.

Using the laser
The beam line of the laser is available to assist in making straight cuts. You can either cut along the projected line or point the laser beam at a fixed point on the work piece and then cut.
Before using the laser, you must remove the insulating pad.

  1. Remove the insulating pad.
  2. To switch the laser (18) on, push the On/Off switch for the laser (1) .
  3. To switch the laser off, push the On/Off switch for the laser again.

  4. Do not exert any side pressure on the work piece whilst working.

WARNING!
Risk of injury!
Improper handling of the work piece can cause it to slip whilst working and inflict serious injury.

  1. Clamp small wood pieces in place before working on them.
  2. Never use your hand to hold small work pieces.
  3. Always perform a test cut on a leftover piece first.
  4. Set the cutting depth (see chapter “Set-ting the cutting depth”).
  5. Hold the product firmly with your hand on the handle (4).
  6. Switch the product on and let the fitted tool reach its full speed.
  7. Place the base plate (12) on the work piece up to the mark. The base plate must always be flat on the work piece. The waste piece must be on the left side of the product so that the wide part of the base plate is located completely on the work piece.
  8. Push the access switch for the protec-tive hood (3) and slowly lower the fitted tool into the work piece.
  9. Move the product forwards across the work piece. Never pull the product backwards across the work piece.
  10. Only exert minimal pressure (gentle feed motion) on the product when working. Gently and evenly push the product forwards.
  11. Once you reach the end of the cut, switch the product off, let the fitted tool come to a standstill and pull the fitted tool out of the work piece.

Check the protective hood

  1. Release the cutting depth limiter (7).
  2. Push the access switch for the protec-tive hood (3) and hold it in position.
  3. The protective hood (14) must be able to move without jamming and, when letting go, the base plate (12) must spring back into the start position itself.

Cutting along a line
You can use the cutting line guides located on the front and back of the base plate (12) to follow a guide line marked on the work piece.
For precision cuts, the offset of the kerf with respect to the marked guide line must be determined by performing a test cut. Any resulting deviation from the guide line indi-cates how the new line must be marked to compensate for the offset of the kerf so that you can perform a precision cut.

Performing a plunge cut

  1. Make sure that the material you intend to cut is not too hard for a plunge cut.
  2. Some very hard materials are not suita-ble for plunge cutting.
  3. Place the base plate (12) on the work piece. Make sure that the rear line cut-ting line guide is in line with the start of the cut.
  4. Switch the product on and let the fitted tool reach its full speed.
  5. Slowly plunge the fitted tool into the material applying gentle pressure.
  6. Move the product forwards across the work piece. Never pull the product backwards across the work piece.
  7. Once you reach the end of the cut, switch the product off, let the fitted tool come to a standstill and pull the fitted tool out of the work piece.

Performing a parallel cut

  1. Attach the parallel guide (13) on the product as described above and set it to the desired width.
  2. Switch the product on. Wait until it has reached its full speed before inserting the saw blade into the work piece.
  3. Place the product on the work piece and guide it parallel along the edge of the work piece.

Cutting large work pieces
Proceed as follows to work on large work pieces or cut long, straight edges:

  1. Use the screw clamps to secure the track on the work piece.
  2. While cutting, run the left side of the base plate (12) along the track.

Cutting tiles

  • Affix tape or insulating tape to the tiles to facilitate work and prevent scratches.
