WIRING DETAIL
WARNING
Overloading circuit can cause fires. DO NOT exceed:
- Max. stop/turn/backup light: 2 per side (4.2 amps)
- Max. tail lights: (7.5 amps)
- Max. 7 Way 12 Volt +: (30 amps)
Read vehicle’s owners manual & instruction sheet for additional information.
PREP VEHICLE
- Disconnect and isolate the vehicle’s negative battery terminal. A
- Open the rear door. Locate the protective covers next to each taillight. Starting on the driver side, use a Phillips screwdriver to carefully unscrew each clip (4) and remove with a panel puller. Locate the (2) 10MM bolts. Using a 10MM socket remove the bolts. Carefully set aside bolts and clips. Carefully remove the cover and set aside to expose the taillight connector. Repeat this process for the passenger side. b
- On the driver and passenger sides of the vehicle, locate the vehicle’s taillight wiring harness. Separate this connector, being careful not to break the locking tabs. All connector surfaces should be clean and free of dirt.
MODULE CONNECTION
- Beginning on the driver’s side and underneath the vehicle, route the harness containing the yellow wire up through the opening between the vehicle bumper and body to the driver’s side taillight pocket. A
- On the driver’s side, insert the T-Connector end, with the yellow wire, between the vehicle wiring connectors and lock into place. Ensure that the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place.
- Locate the exposed area above and behind the taillight. Locate a flat surface and mount the T- Connector black box using double-sided tape provided to prevent damage or rattling.
- WARNING Make sure the module is mounted so that the epoxy side of the module is pointed towards the ground to prevent any water buildup.
- Locate a suitable grounding point near the connector such as the vehicle’s frame or cross member. (Do not drill into vehicle floor or bed.) Clean dirt and rustproofing from area. Drill a 3/32” hole and secure white wire using an eyelet and screw provided.
- CAUTION Verify what is behind any surface prior to drilling to avoid damage to the vehicle and/or personal injury. Do not drill into any exposed surfaces.
- Route harness containing the green wire underneath the vehicle up through the opening between the vehicle bumper and body to the passenger’s side taillight pocket.
- Insert the T-One® Connector end, with the green wire, between the vehicle wiring connectors and lock into place. All connector surfaces should be clean and free of dirt. B
BODY HARNESS
- Starting underneath on the driver’s side locate and connect the Black/Blue/Red wires from the jacketed cable to the module’s black box using the supplied Perma seal butt connectors. (See wiring detail for reference.)
- WARNING If routing the wire thru a grommet and along the exterior of the vehicle, be careful to avoid any hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank or any other points that may pinch or break the wire.
- Route the body harness down the driver’s side of the vehicle and up into the engine compartment to the battery location.
- Connect the black wire to the fuse holder Labeled (7-Way harness power fuse) using the supplied yellow Perma seal Butt connector. Connect ring terminal on the opposite end of the fuse holder (Wiring Detail on Page 1).
BRAKE CONTROL HARNESS
-
Determine a suitable mounting point on the tow vehicle for the Electric Brake control harness.
Note: Brake Control not included. Brake Control -
Harness designed to work with Tekonsha® Brake Controls such as: 90195, 90885 or 90160. Go to www.tekonsha.com for more details or where to buy.
-
Route the Blue wire from the body harness through a Grommet in the fire wall. Connect the blue wire from the body harness to the blue wire from the brake control harness using supplied butt connector. a
-
Secure any loose wires or panels from the brake control harness installation.
-
Locate the vehicle’s intergraded brake control harness to the right of the brake pedal under the dashboard. b
-
Insert the brake control harness into the vehicle’s mating connector.
7-WAY HARNESS
- Determine 7-Way mounting location.
- Route the 7-Way Harness containing the 7 wires behind rear bumper fascia and over the bumper support bracket, towards the Mounting location.
- Using wire insertion detail, pin 7-Way Connector.
- Connect 7-Way connector and 7-Way socket. Mount 7-Way (Bracket not included).
COMPLETION
- Secure harness with the cable ties provided, to prevent damage or rattling. Be careful to avoid any areas that would pinch, cut or melt the wire.
- Apply heat directly to butt connectors, working from the center out to the edges, using a hot air gun or another source, until the tubing recovers and the adhesive flows. Allow to cool before inspecting splice and checking integrity.
- Replace all coverings, grommets or any other components that were removed for ease of installation. Some grommets will need to be altered to allow wires to pass through. Seal altered grommets with silicone.
- Reconnect the vehicle’s Negative (-) battery cable.
- Test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer once installed.
TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE
7-Way not functioning properly| Ensure T-One® T-Connector ends are
fully inserted and locked in place. Remove Tow Harness power Module 25 amp
fuse for 10 seconds and repeat test.| Check chassis grounds. Ensure ring
terminals are in full contact with the vehicle’s chassis. Remove Tow Harness
power Module 25 amp fuse for 10 seconds and repeat test.
---|---|---
No Power to 7-Way| Installation may have activated circuit protection.
Start the vehicle and turn all functions off Tail (headlights), brake and
turn. Remove Tow Harness power Module 25 amp fuse for 10 seconds and repeat
test.| Ensure 25 amp fuse is fully inserted into the fuse holder. The fuse
should have no breaks. The fuse holder is connected properly to the positive
post of the battery. Remove 25 amp fuse for 10 seconds and re- peat test.
Ensure the module is connected to B+. Using a tester or volt meter check for
voltage on either side of the yellow butt connector near the module. Remove
