IDEAL USER CONDITIONS
Mobility scooters are restricted to just 10km/h and can only be used in pedestrian areas. As such, they’re not classed as vehicles and don’t need to be registered – except in Queensland, which offers free registration. Users also don’t need a license to operate them. The only requirement in Australia is that the user has a genuine need for a mobility scooter. However, it’s important that they’re able to operate their mobility scooter safely so there is benefit in an OT assessment or discussion with the GP about the client’s ability to safely operate a scooter. Older people or people with the following abilities and support needs may benefit from an Aspire Supalite Boot Scooter:

  • Pain or fatigue who would like to be able to access indoor or paved areas with level terrain
  • Those with a mobility problem who have
    •  The ability to independently transfer on/off scooter;
    • Suitable vision and hearing,
    • Suitable sitting balance,
    • A suitable range of movement and function in their neck, shoulders, arms, and hands
    • Cognitive abilities to safely manage a mobility scooter
  • Require a lightweight scooter that can be dismantled for travel and storage purposes
  • Would like to join family or friends at shopping centers or even on holidays. The Supalite scooter can improve access and endurance in crowded spaces and make the outing achievable.

CLIENT OUTCOMES

The Aspire Supalite Boot Scooter is suitable for indoor use such as in shopping centers or areas with level terrain. It can assist users in the following ways:
Making daily activities easier

  • A decrease in mobility, whether due to age or illness, can make daily activities much harder. People may either forgo these activities entirely or get help from others to do these things for them e.g.,
    • Assistance to do the shopping
    • Assistance to attend appointments
    • Limit or stop going out or meeting up with friends
  • A mobility scooter allows the user to carry out these activities themselves, without assistance. Suddenly they are able to get around at home, travel to the shops and back, and even get to appointments, without the hassle.

Increased independence and reduced carer support

  • Mobility scooters allow people who may not have previously been able to travel far without assistance, to gain a significant level of independence
  • Scooter use can enable independent community access from home in communities with suitable and level terrain e.g., Retirement Villages, or from home to appointments/shops using a Maxi-Taxi
  • The small turning circle of the Aspire Supalite Scooter enables entry to stores and businesses that have suitable access and spaces within their facility
  • The use of this scooter can enable the user to attend appointments or shop independently from the carer if they choose. Carers and scooter users can go in different directions to meet their own needs for the outing or enjoy the outing together

Falls prevention

  • Scooter use can increase safety for those who are at risk of falling due to pain or impaired mobility

Reduced pain and fatigue

  • Scooter use can support those who develop pain or fatigue with walking distances or standing e.g., walking around shopping centers; managing crowds, or queueing

Community access and ability to travel

  • A major benefit of a mobility scooter is that it can be taken on public transport and other accessible vehicles, such as multipurpose taxis (MPT). This allows the user to travel further while being able to take their mobility scooter with them.
  • NB: Scooter users need to be able to transfer off the scooter and onto the MPT seat for transport.
  • Mobility scooters can also be taken on holidays. Most airlines will allow users to check their scooters in oversize luggage, allowing users greater access and endurance when on vacation
  • The scooter can even be left in the boot of the car so that it is available when you are out and about. Only the battery pack needs to be removed for charging

Improved health and wellbeing, choice and control

  • The use of a mobility scooter can help to combat social isolation and health implications for the elderly or someone living with a disability. An activity that was previously too daunting can now seem achievable, enabling the scooter user to join family and friends in accessing the community and lengthen the time that they can participate in an activity
  • Scooter users have the ability to determine their own direction when accessing the shops or community. This can contribute to increased dignity and freedom of choice
  • Reduced reliance on carers to attend appointments to assist the user with their mobility
  • Improved mood resulting from social engagement, increased independence, and reduced pain and fatigue
