INSTRUCTIONS
READ AND SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS
WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE, ELECTRICAL SHOCK, OR INJURY TO PERSONS, OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING:
- Use this unit only in the manner intended by the manufacturer. If you have a question, contact the manufacturer at the address or telephone number listed in the warranty.
- Before servicing or cleaning the unit, switch the power off at the service panel and lock the service disconnecting means to prevent power from being switched on accidentally. When the service disconnecting means cannot be locked, securely fasten a prominent warning device, such as a tag, to the service panel.
- Installation work and electrical wiring must be done by a qualified person(s) by all applicable codes and standards, including fire-rated construction codes and standards.
- Sufficient air is needed for proper combustion and exhausting of gases through the flue (chimney) of fuel-burning equipment to prevent back-drafting. Follow the heating equipment manufacturer’s guidelines and safety standards such as those published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the American Society for Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), and the local code authorities.
- When cutting or drilling into a wall or ceiling, do not damage electrical wiring and other hidden utilities.
- Ducted fans must always be vented to the outdoors.
- Acceptable for use over a bathtub or shower when installed in a GFCI-protected branch circuit.
- Install a fan at least five feet (1.52 m) above the floor.
- Never place a switch where it can be reached from a tub or shower.
- This unit must be grounded.
- The wearing of safety glasses and gloves is recommended when installing, maintaining, or cleaning the unit to reduce the risk of injury that could be caused by the presence of thin metal and/or moving parts.
- If the fan makes excessive noise or if there is unusual noise or smells of smoke, disconnect the power supply and contact customer service.
- Do Not Use Replacement Parts That Have Not Been Recommended By The Manufacturer (e.g. Parts Made At Home Using A 3D Printer).
- To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, Do Not use this fan with any solid-state speed control device.
CAUTION
- For general ventilation use only. Do not use to exhaust hazardous or explosive materials and vapors.
- To avoid motor bearing damage and noisy and/or unbalanced impellers, keep drywall spray, construction dust, etc. off the power unit.
- Please read the specifications label on the product for further information and requirements.
The ducting from this fan to the outside of the building has a strong effect on the airflow, noise, and energy use of the fan. Use the shortest, straightest duct routing possible for best performance, and avoid installing the fan with smaller ducts than recommended. Insulation around the ducts can reduce energy loss and inhibit mold growth. Fans installed with existing ducts may not achieve their rated airflow.
FAN LOCATION INSTALLATION
- Remove the motor plate from the housing by pushing down on it and pulling the side of the housing or using a screwdriver (FIG. 1).
- Remove the wiring panel by pushing the side of the housing and pulling it straight out. The unit is shipped ready to wire through the top of the housing. To use an alternate “knockout hole”, bend the housing flap. Only one hole can be exposed – do not break off the housing flap (FIG. 2).
- Choose a fan location. It can be mounted on the ceiling or wall. For best performance, locate with shortest duct length and minimum bends and curves and SCREW (ATTACH) TO JOIST OR STUD LOCATION.
- NEW CONSTRUCTION (prior to finish the ceiling or wall):
- MAKE SURE THE HOUSING WILL BE FLUSH WITH THE FINISHED CEILING OR WALL.
- Slotted tabs are provided to locate housing with 1/2″ ceiling or wall material.
- Bend tabs outward 90 degrees (use a screwdriver if needed) and position housing so tabs rest on bottom of joist or wall stud.
- Screw housing to joist or stud using installation ears on outside (FIG. 3) or holes on inside of housing. Secure using four screws for solid installation
- REPLACEMENT/NEW IN CEILING OR WALL:
- MAKE SURE YOUR HOUSING IS NEXT TO A CEILING JOIST OR WALL STUD FOR PROPER ATTACHMENT BEFORE CUTTING THE OPENING.
- Trace the outline of housing in the desired location next to the ceiling joist or wall stud. Cut an opening and make sure to keep within traced lines and the cut is “CLEAN”.
- If the cut is not “CLEAN”, some finishing work after installation will be needed. Place housing in opening with BOTTOM EDGE FLUSH TO FINISHED CEILING OR WALL.
- Slotted tabs are provided to locate housing with 1/2” ceiling or wall material. Bend tabs outward at 90 degrees (use a screwdriver if needed). Screw housing to joist or stud using holes on the inside (FIG. 4) of housing.
- Secure using two screws for a tight fit.
- ELECTRICAL WIRING:
- TURN OFF THE POWER AT THE SERVICE ENTRANCE and connect wiring from the fan to the house wiring using the correct size wire connectors.
- Connect black supply (house) wire to black wire on the wire panel. Connect white supply (house) wire to white wire on the wire panel.
- Connect ground (copper) supply (house) wire to green or copper wire in wire panel (FIG. 5).
- Push all wiring into a corner under wire panel and slide wire panel back into its original place – press and make sure the tab on top is locked into the side of the housing.
- CAUTION: DO NOT ALLOW WIRES TO EXTEND OUTSIDE OF
- WIRING PANEL. Exposed wires will become pinched or cut. Electrical short may result.
- DUCTING AND FINISHING:
- The duct connector is 3″. If using a 4″ duct, a transition from 3″ to 4″ will be needed (Model 4638 – not included).
- Depending on the duct you have, installation can be room-side (FLEX) or in the attic (RIGID).
- NEW CONSTRUCTION:
- Install on the outside of the housing making sure the duct is as straight as possible. FLEX duct MUST be stretched 2′ at fan and roof/wall cap for proper ventilation. Make sure full duct run IS NOT bent throughout the duct run.
- If rigid duct is used, seam should be at top of duct connector. Use
- aluminum tape around the duct to the duct connector and to the housing to assure a tight seal – NO AIR LEAKAGE (FIG. 6).
- REPLACEMENT/NEW CUT IN DRYWALL:
- Use a screwdriver through the square opening and unlatch by sliding the duct connector to the left to disconnect from the housing. Pull the FLEX duct through the opening and attach it to the duct connector.
- Use aluminum tape around the duct to the duct connector. Push the duct and duct connector back through the opening stretching the FLEX duct.
- Slide the duct connector to the right until the duct connector latches to the housing. Use aluminum tape over the latch square opening and between the duct connector and the housing to ensure a tight seal – NO AIR LEAKAGE.
- Replace the motor plate at a slight angle into the two tabs. Press down on the opposite side until the single tab engages into the housing. Make sure it is secured (FIG. 7).
- Squeeze the grille springs and insert them into the two slots on the motor plate. Push the grille up until the grille legs or grille are flush with the ceiling or wall (FIG. 8).
MAINTENANCE
- For quiet and efficient operation, long life, and attractive appearance; regularly clean the grille and interior of the unit.
- TO CLEAN THE GRILLE: Remove the grille, use a mild detergent, such as dishwashing liquid, and dry with a soft cloth. DO NOT USE ABRASIVE CLOTHS, STEEL WOOL PADS, OR SCOURING POWDERS.
- TO CLEAN INTERIOR OF UNIT: Once the grille is removed, vacuum the interior of the unit with a dusting brush attachment.
- The motor is permanently lubricated and never needs oiling. If the unit is making an excessive or unusual noise, replace the blower assembly (including the motor and impeller).
