  • Product Name: Gas-Fired Low-Intensity Radiant Tube Heaters
  • Model Options: DJ20 and DL2
  • Compatible Models: VZ, VZH, VZT

Product Usage Instructions

Installation Requirements

Ensure installation is performed by a qualified service agency in compliance with all relevant codes and regulations.

Kit Components

Refer to the appropriate table below to ensure all necessary components are available before starting the installation.

Option DJ20: High-Elevation Conversion Kit Components

Unit Size (MBTUh) Component Component PN

Option DL2: Propane Conversion Kit Components

Unit Size (MBTUh) Component Component PN

Conversion Process

  1. Follow the step-by-step instructions provided in the manual.
  2. Ensure all components are securely installed according to specifications.
  3. Double-check for any gas leaks before operating the heater.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I install the conversion kit myself?

A: No, the kit should be installed by a qualified service agency to prevent any risks associated with improper installation.

Q: What should I do if I suspect a gas leak after installation?

A: If you suspect a gas leak, immediately turn off the gas supply, ventilate the area, and contact a professional service agency for assistance.

  • DANGER These kits are to be installed by a qualified service agency in accordance with these instructions and compliance with all codes and requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.
  • Improper installation, adjustment, alteration, service, and/or maintenance can cause property damage, injury, or death. The qualified agency performing this work assumes responsibility for this installation.
  • Option DJ20 is for converting units for use at elevations >2,000 feet (>610 meters). Deration is necessary to compensate for low atmospheric pressure at high elevations. This requires replacing the burner orifice.
  • Option DL2 is for converting natural gas units for use with propane. When converting fuels, it is necessary to have the complete heater model. The identifying model number can be found on the heater rating plate.
  • The rating plate identifies only original equipment, so also compare the label on the gas valve with the description listed.
  • Refer to the installation manual provided with the unit for important safety information.

INSTALLATION

  • NOTE: This procedure assumes that the unit has already been installed. However, the conversion kits may be installed on a unit that has not been installed.
  • For an uninstalled unit, ensure that the installation is completed under the installation manual provided with the unit when the conversion is complete.
  1. Remove gas supply and electrical power:
    • a. Close the manual shutoff valve on the flexible gas connector to turn OFF the gas supply to the heater.
    • b. Turn OFF electrical power.
  2. Remove burner cabinet panel(s) for access:
    • a. For model VZ or VZT, disconnect the combustion air piping from the blower if a unit is connected to outside combustion air, unplug the blower motor power cable, and remove the top blower panel with the blower and motor assembly attached.
    • b. For model VZH, remove both side panels.
  3. Replace burner orifice:
  • DANGER Ensure that the correct orifice for installation elevation and type of fuel is installed.
  • a. Select the appropriate replacement orifice from Table 3 or Table 4.
  • b. Remove and save screws that secure the ignitor assembly (see Figure 1) to the inside panel and remove the ignitor assembly (remains connected to the wiring harness).
  • c. Insert a screwdriver in holes in the burner cup shaft (see Figure 1) and use it as leverage to loosen burner cup from the gas manifold. Continue to unthread the burner cup from the gas manifold by hand and move out of the way to access the burner orifice.
  • d. Using a wrench, remove the existing burner orifice (see Figure 2) from the gas manifold.
  • DANGER DO NOT attempt to drill the burner orifice. Use a factory-supplied orifice only.
  • DO NOT block the burner orifice with pipe joint compound. Pipe joint compounds (pipe dope) shall be resistant to the action of any chemical constituents of the gas being supplied.
  • DO NOT overtighten the burner orifice.
  • e. Using approved pipe joint compound, thread replacement orifice from the kit into gas manifold by hand until snug. Torque orifice to 15 inch-pounds using the wrench.
  • f. Rethread burner cup into gas manifold by hand and then tighten using a screwdriver.
  • g. Re-install the ignitor assembly on the inside panel and secure using existing screws.
  • If installing a high-elevation conversion kit (option DJ20) only, proceed to step 5. If installing a propane conversion kit (option DL2), replace the regulator spring in combination gas valve as follows:
  • a. For model VZ, open the hinged access door.
  • b. Remove the cover screw, regulator screw, and existing regulator spring from the combination gas valve’s regulator sleeve (see Figure 3).
  • c. Install replacement regulator spring from the kit into regulator sleeve and thread regulator screw approximately eight turns into the sleeve.
  • Open the manual shutoff valve on the flexible gas connector to turn the gas supply to the heater.
  • DANGER DO NOT use an open flame to check for gas leaks.

Perform leak test:

  • a. Check all connections for gas leaks using commercial leak-detecting fluid or rich soap and water solution. Leaks are indicated by the presence of bubbles.
  • b. If the leak is detected, tighten the connection. If the leak cannot be stopped by tightening the connection, replace part(s).
  • 7. Adjust manifold (outlet) gas pressure under the Measure and Adjust Manifold Gas (Outlet) Pressure section in the installation manual provided with the unit.
  • 8. Re-install panel(s) removed in step 2.
  • 9. For model VZ or VZT, close the hinged access door, reconnect the combustion air piping to the blower if the unit is connected to outside combustion air, and plug in the blower motor power cable.
  • Install the appropriate conversion label (see Figure 4) from the kit:
  • a. Using the permanent marker, fill in the data on the conversion label. Refer to the unit’s rating plate for input.
  • b. Adhere label to the burner cabinet.
  • Start up the heater and check for proper operation.
  • Specifications and illustrations are subject to change without notice or incurring obligations.
