Educational Insights 5144 Day ‘N’ Night Ant Factory

WHAT’S IN THE BOX

  • 1 Day N’ Night Ant Factory (with gel)
  • 1 Tunnel starter stick
  • Guide
  • Ant certificate
  • Requires 3 AA batteries (not included)

How to Use Your

GeoSafari® Day ‘N’ Night Ant Factory Fill out and send your Ant Certificate along with the required money for postage and handling, and you will receive a small plastic tube of Pogonomyrmex occidentally also known as harvester ants.

After your ants arrive, follow these instructions:

  1. Take a Philips screwdriver and remove the battery door to install 3 AA batteries. Replace the battery door, then set the ant factory onto a level surface away from any extreme heat or cold – room temperature (i.e. 58 to 75 degrees is best) and away from direct sunlight.
  2. Remove the top air vent cap. Use the plastic tunnel starter stick to poke 6 holes into the gel – approximately 1” deep. These holes will help the ants start tunneling.
  3. Before you add the ants into the ant factory, place the vial of ants in the refrigerator – no more than 5 minutes to 7 minutes (caution: do not put ants in the freezer as it will kill them!) The temperature change will help the ants slow down so they will be easier to transfer into the ant factory. Remove the cap from the vial, and gently shake the ants into the ant factory. Please use adult supervision when handling harvester ants.
  4. Snap the lid back onto the ant factory. Place the ant factory in a dark location for about one hour so the ants can get used to their new home.
  5. Ants will start tunneling in approximately 1 to 2 days, so be patient.
  6. Once the ants start tunneling, you can turn on the LED light show to view your ants in the dark. The light show will cycle through three LED colors: blue, green, and yellow. Note: be sure to turn off the light show when you’re done viewing the ants.
  7. Don’t put any other ants in the Ant Factory habitat. Ants from different colonies will fight. Each colony has a distinctive chemical scent. This is how ants in a colony know whether or not another ant belongs to the colony.

TROUBLESHOOTING

How do I get my ants?

  • Send for your supply of ants using the enclosed Ant Certificate. You can also find your own ants.

When will I receive the ants that I ordered?

  • Under ordinary conditions, you should receive your ants within two to three weeks from the time you mail your Ant Certificate. We will send your ants by mail upon receipt of your order. If the weather is extremely cold, there may be a one-week delay for the ants’ protection.

Do many ants die when they are shipped through the mail?

  • Some of the ants may die during shipment. However, we consider this when we send the shipment and send many more ants than are needed to fill your ant factory. If you live in a cold area, watch for the mail delivery. You don’t want the ants waiting outside in a freezing cold mailbox.

Will I receive a queen with my ants?

  • There is a federal regulation controlling the handling of ant queens. All of the ants that we send will be workers. The workers are female ants that cannot reproduce. Even without a queen, these ants are exciting creatures to watch. If you find your own ants, you can look for the queen, eggs, and larvae.

Is the Day ‘N’ Night Ant Factory escape-proof?

  • Yes. This habitat was designed to prevent escapes. However, you must handle your ant factory habitat carefully. Don’t drop it.

Do I need to feed or water my ants?

  • No. The ant gel is a food and water source for your ants.

Can I replace the ant gel once the ant colony expires?

  • Yes. With adult supervision, use a butter knife to break up the old ant gel, then run a small amount of warm tap water into the tank, and flush out the old gel. Do not submerge the tank in water. Educational Insights does not sell ant gel replenishment packs. Ant gel replenishment packs are available on Amazon and other internet retailers. CAUTION: Do not release these ants into your local environment. They could be harmful to some plants. Keep them in the Ant Factory habitat.
