The Design & Drill® Bolt-It Bucket™ lets little builders construct on the go. The sturdy lid, big bolts, and realistic drill encourage young learners to develop a variety of important skills, from color recognition and counting to fine motor skills and following directions.
Getting started
- Insert three (3) AAA batteries into the drill’s battery compartment following the instructions in this guide.
- Help your child install the drill bit onto the end of the drill.
- Show your child how to change the direction of the drill bit by sliding the button on the back of the drill.
- Place a bolt on the lid of the bucket. Demonstrate how to drill the bolt in, and then reverse the drill to show how to remove the bolt.
- Let your child’s imagination take over!
Patterns
- Before using the patterns in this guide, encourage your child to play freely with the lid, and bolts, and drill by drilling bolts in wherever they like.
- When you feel your child is ready, choose one of the patterns to re-create. Review the pattern with your child and identify which color bolts are needed. Set these aside so they are easier to access.
- Encourage your child to pay close attention to the position of the bolts by counting the number of each color bolt and the number of blank holes between bolts. You can help by asking questions such as, “What is next to the yellow bolt? What is below the red bolt? What is above the green bolt? How many blue bolts are in that row?”
TIP: It may be helpful to say the pictured pattern aloud as the child works, for example, “Green, green, yellow, blue.”
- As your child gains more experience with the patterns, you can try the more complex patterns. You can also use the patterns to encourage language development by discussing the details in each picture or asking your child to tell you a story about the design.
