SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS
NOTE: First turn off electricity.
Recessed Ceiling Mount Battery Backup
- Position recessed kits and bar hangers between joists. Make sure bar hangers are in the correct position and level with the bottom of the joists. Hammer in temporary “nail in” tabs on hanger to hold in place and then secure permanently with the included Recess Bracket Screws for metal joists or wood (ST4 x 12 mm Hex Head and torque to 5.3 in lbs (0.6 Nm)). Adjust recessed kit vertically to the desired position and then tighten all screws. The recommended opening in the surface is 3.5” x 15” rectangle. Max distance between Ceiling Joist is 18.5”.
- Use screwdriver to gently open the front cover.
- EL models only: Slide the battery switch to “BATT” Position. (Product is shipped in AC ONLY position)
- Remove top hole plug.
- Feed AC supply wires through the center hole.
- Snap the front cover back in place.
- Install recess J-Box that is included with the unit by feeding wires through the J-Box and install with the included J-Box Screws (ST3.5 X 5 mm and torque to 5.3 in lbs (0.6 Nm)) which are shipped inside Universal Mount Accessory Kit located inside the J-Box
- Remove the end cap with the Test Switch and Status LED using a #1 Philips Screwdriver. Be careful as the end cap also holds the Light Bar and Sign Ratchet. Remove the Test Button by unplugging the Test Button Connector, pinching the lever locks on the inside of the End Cap, and pushing the Test Button through the End Cap. Remove the Status LED from the Status LED Mounting Bushing by gently pushing the Status LED back through the End Cap. Route the Status LED through the larger Test Button hole. Reinstall the End Cap with the same screws (ST3.0 X 10 and torque to 5.3 in lbs (0.6 Nm)) making sure the wires from the Test Button and Status LED are pulled through the Test Button hole.
- Make the electrical connections to the unit inside the J-Box (see wiring diagram). With a strain relief provided by the contractor and secure the lid of the J-Box with the J-Box to J-Box Screw (M4 x 5 and torque to 5.3 in lbs (0.6 Nm)).
- In preparation for the next step, route Status LED harness and Test Button harness through Recess Bracket between the Trim Plate Mounting Tab and Spring Clip, which is shown in the picture below.
- Install the light fixture into the Recess Bracket making sure not to pinch any wires. Tip: Keep the body of the light fixture close to the same plane as the ceiling surface for easier installation.
- Install the Trim Plate Insert with Test Button and Status LED Mounts into the Trim Plate. Push the Test Button into the trim plate front side until lock ramps snap in place and reconnect connector. Insert the Status LED Bushing into the front side of trim plate and push Status LED into bushing from backside of trim plate.
- Reconnect test button connector.
- Install Trim Plate with included Trim Plate Screws (M4 X 5 mm and 3.54 in lbs (0.4 Nm)) which are shipped inside Universal Mount Accessory Kit located inside the J-Box.
- If a single sided panel is wanted, remove all 4 snaps (shipped without snaps installed) gently with a tool that will not scratch the sign. Remove clear film off shiny side of back panel and line up back panel with shiny side out. Apply snaps by squeezing them in place in the same orientation. If a double sign is wanted add snaps without back panel.
- Insert panel into main body assembly gently. Make sure the Chevron orientation is correct by peeling unnecessary Chevron(s) off with finger and clean any residue off surface with Pledge Furniture Polish (recommended).
NOTE: First turn off electricity.

Testing
National Electric Code (NEC) and NFPA life safety code regulations require
that routine tests need to be performed as listed below:
Once every month, the unit needs tested for duration of 30 seconds.
- Push in and hold the test switch to perform the test.
Once every 12 months, a full 90-minute (per UL requirements) test needs to be performed on the unit.
- Remove Power to the unit and leave in the emergency mode. The lamps should stay ON for at least 90 minutes.
Operation
CAUTION: Battery Backup Orientation – Switch in the “Batt” position: The
battery in this unit may not fully charged. After electricity is connected to
the unit, let battery charge for at least 24 hours, then normal operation of
this unit should take effect.
- Apply AC power to the sign. The LED indicator should turn GREEN.
- After the battery has been left to charge for 2 hours, test the sign by pushing the test button. The LED Status light turns OFF and the sign should remain ON.
- When the switch is released, EXIT section remains ON and the LED indicator turns back to GREEN.
- When battery is disconnected the Status LED turns RED.
Chevron(s)
If a Chevron(s) needs to be reapplied peel the back of Chevron tab(s) and
place Chevron tab(s) on panel using dimensions shown with main part of the tab
aligned to the edge of the sign. Carefully peel off the tab around the
chevron. If Mirrored Back Plate needs to be removed refer to step 9. Remove
any bubbles that may present themselves on the Chevron(s)
Panel Removal
If the panel should need to be removed turn off electricity. If the unit is
recessed mounted remove trim plate first and pull unit from recess bracket.
Loosen the End Cap Screws with a No 1 Phillips Screwdriver on the side with
the Test text to remove the End Cap from the main body. Be careful as the End
Cap also holds the Sign Ratchet, the Led Board Holders, and the LED Board in
place. Reinstall the end cap with the same screws (ST3.0 X 10 and torque to
5.3 in lbs (0.6 Nm)). When reassembling insert the Exit Sign in last.
