INTRODUCTION

AcuRite weather sensors are most accurate if they are mounted up as high as possible. For some installations, this makes replacing batteries more difficult. The AcuRite Weather Sensors feature a modular design that allows for the installation of certain accessories and upgrades. The Solar Battery Pack allows you to power your outdoor sensor with a solar-powered rechargeable battery, so you don’t need to worry about replacing drained batteries in a hard-to-reach place anymore. The advanced solar cell will charge the included lithium rechargeable battery with any available sunlight, and includes a “push-to-check” battery level indicator for easy monitoring.

BEFORE INSTALLING OUTDOORS

  1. Carefully loosen the small Phillips-type screw to remove the battery compartment cover on the back of the Solar Power Pack.
  2. Install the included #18650 rechargeable lithium battery into the solar power pack, following the polarity diagram in the battery compartment.

Optional for installation in areas of lower sunlight – Locate the USB-C charging port within the battery compartment and charge the battery completely with a USB-C charger (not included). Utilize the integrated battery level indicator to indicate when the battery is fully charged.

GENERAL SOLAR POWER CONSIDERATIONS

  • Solar cells should generally face the sun for best operation. The U.S. is in the northern hemisphere, and solar cells should ideally be mounted to FACE SOUTH.
  • The solar cell angle is determined by the “Mount Angle Adjustment”. Loosen the Phillips screw to allow adjustment of the angle, tighten to lock.
  • It is recommended to mount the solar cell closer to flat in the summer months to take advantage of the strong mid-day sun. Adjust the angle to be closer to 45º in the winter months to capture the lower sun angles.
  • Adjusting the solar cell to a 45º angle also aides any potential snow to slide off easier.
  • Photovoltaic solar panels work by absorbing sunlight to create electricity. This comes primarily from the sun directly, but can also come from sunlight reflected from surrounding areas. When fully charged, the included battery provides ample power to run either the AcuRite Iris OR the AcuRite Atlas for extended lengths of time without substatial sun exposure. Because of this efficiency, the Solar Power Pack does NOT need to be mounted in a manner that will expose it to full sun all day long. In most cases, ambient sunlight with occasional direct sun exposure will provide adequate power to provide uninterrupted weather station operation.
  • Periodically check the solar cell surface for dust and/or debris and clean it with a damp cloth if necessary to maintain peak charging efficiency.

INDICATORS

  • PUSH-TO-CHECK Battery Level Indicator: Push to momentarily display the approximate battery charge level (25%, 50%, 75%, 100%). The battery DOES NOT need to be 100% charged to operate the Weather Station. Initially, the battery will likely read between 50%-75% charged. However, since the solar panel provides more power than the weather station consumes, the battery should charge to 100% and maintain that level after a week or so in adequate sunlight exposure.
  • SOLAR STATUS Indicator: IF the battery is NOT fully charged, the solar status indicator will illuminate solid to indicate the solar panel is receiving adequate sunlight AND is charging the less than 100% full battery. IF the indicator is NOT illuminated, this indicates the battery is fully charged and does not need to be charged from the solar panel. This also prevents OVERCHARGING the battery. IF the indicator is BLINKING, this indicates that either the battery is NOT installed (or installed incorrectly) or is too OLD to accept proper charging and needs to be replaced.

MOUNTING ON 3/4” POLE

  1. Unscrew standard screws to separate the two halves of the pole clamp. Position the solar power pack at an easy-to-reach height to allow for cleaning of the solar panel surface as necessary.
  2. Re-insert and tighten standard screws to secure the two halves of the pole clamp around the pole. Position the wire to form a drip loop to aide in keeping excess water away.
  3. When routing the wire up to the AcuRite IRIS or AcuRite ATLAS weather sensor, DO NOT WRAP the wire around the pole as this can cause interference with the weather station wireless signal.

Wrap any excess wire in a loop and secure. Adjust the solar panel angle for best position by loosening the screw on the Solar Angle Adjustment. Re-tighten screw to lock angle adjustments.

SURFACE MOUNT

(Fence Post, Deck Post, Wall, etc.)

  1. Unscrew standard screws to separate the two halves of the pole clamp. Position the solar power pack at an easy to reach height to allow for cleaning of the solar panel surface as necessary.
  2. Insert and tighten the WOOD SCREWS to secure CLAMP PART A to a wood or similar surface. CLAMP PART B is not utilized in a surface mount installation (keep or discard). Position the wire to form a drip loop to aide in keeping excess water away.
  3. When routing the wire up to the AcuRite IRIS or AcuRite ATLAS weather sensor, wrap any excess wire in a loop and secure. Adjust the solar panel angle for best position by loosening the screw on the Solar Angle Adjustment. Re-tighten screw to lock angle adjustments.

NOTE : Not intended for use with mounting bracket supplied with your outdoor sensor.

Connecting to AcuRite IRIS (5-IN-1)

  1. The included battery compartment adaptor (A) and wire routing clips (B) will be utilized for installation with the AcuRite Iris (5-in-1).
  2. Remove the original battery compartment cover from the bottom of the AcuRite Iris Sensor (keep or discard). Remove batteries if currently installed.
  3. Install the wired battery compartment adaptor into the AcuRite Iris Sensor.
  4. To further secure the wired battery compartment adaptor to the AcuRite Iris Sensor, insert the three (3) in-line clips into the 5-in-1 Sensor as shown. The cord must be taut along the base of the sensor to prevent it from interfering with the sensor’s wind vane.

Connecting to AcuRite ATLAS

  1. The included battery compartment adaptor (A) and wire routing clips (B) will NOT be utilized for installation with the AcuRite Atlas. If you have an AcuRite ATLAS sensor, you may unplug the battery compartment adaptor and discard it.
  2. Remove battery compartment cover from the nbottom of the AcuRite® AtlasTM outdoor sensor. Remove batteries if currently installed.
  3. Plug the power adapter cord into the battery compartment of the sensor.
  4. Loop the cord through the slot, then replace the battery compartment cover.
