Step 1
Ensure the vehicle is safe to install the Motive
Vehicle Gateway:

  • The parking brake is engaged.
  • The engine is off.
  • The main power switch (if available) is turned off.

Step 2
Remove the access panel located on the top center of the dashboard on the right side of the steering wheel. Some vehicles may require a screwdriver.motive Cable 3031 Vehicle Gateway - Figure

Step 3
Detach the terminating resistor from the J1939 bus connector. The J1939 bus connector can generally be found by following the pair of twisted green and yellow wires in the  access panel. Do not discard this resistor.motive Cable

Step 4
Attach the male end of the Motive cable to the female end of the truck’s J1939 bus connector (where the terminating resistor was previously attached). Then, attach the  terminating resistor to the female end of the Motive cable to close the circuit.

Several power/ground studs stick out of the truck inside the access panel. The Motive cable ring terminals fit over two of the studs, which should be labeled or color coded.
The red ring terminal should be attached to the “Power” stud and the black ring terminal should be attached to the “Ground” stud. The “Power” stud may also be labeled  “Battery” or “Battery Fuse.” Do not attach the red ring terminal to the stud labeled “Ignition.”

Use the zip ties provided to secure all the cables.

Step 5
Take the 15-pin connector end of the Motive cable and place it on top of the dashboard. Reattach the access panel.
Depending on the vehicle, the panels may need to be modified in order to run the cable to the top of the dashboard. If the panels cannot be modified, then mount the vehicle gateway inside the panel. When mounted inside the panel, ensure the cable is not pinched, as this will damage the cable.

Step 6
Attach the 15-pin connector to the Vehicle Gateway and mount the Vehicle Gateway to the top of the dashboard.
Secure the 15-pin connector to the Vehicle Gateway using the thumbscrews.motive Cable 3031 Vehicle Gateway - Figure

Use the provided alcohol swabs to clean the mounting area.
Remove the backing from the adhesive strip on the back of the Vehicle Gateway and attach it to the mounting area.
Mount the Vehicle Gateway near the windshield, away from vents and electrical components and at least 12 inches away from any metal components.

Step 7
Once plugged in, the indicator lights will flash momentarily before turning solid red. After approximately one minute, the left-side indicator light will turn green indicating a  successful GPS/ GNSS connection.motive Cable 3031

Step 8
Once the driver connects to the Vehicle Gateway using the Motive Electronic Logbook App available on iOS and Android, the rightside indicator light will turn green indicating a successful Bluetooth connection.
