Product Usage Instructions
Thirsty Hippos are used as dehumidifiers. However, those large disposable plastic containers (costing around $3 dollars each) are single-use and causes air pollution when incinerated; the chemical used cannot be burnt, resulting in land pollution; and when the liquid is poured down the sink, causes water pollution – all of which affect biodiversity, ecosystems, and human health worldwide. The PowerPac iFan Thirsty Hippo Dehumidifier IF3251 is environmentally friendly and sustainable, and can be reused 3000 times! Purchasing this product not only saves you a lot of money, but also helps you and your family save the environment.
Parts & Description
LIST OF COMPONENTS
- Socket
- Moisture Absorbing Holes (top & bottom)
- Indicator
- Main Body
Silica gel adsorbs water readily onto its surface (as opposed to absorbing into the body of the gel), making it useful as a desiccant (drying agent). Silica gel is able to adsorb about 40% of its own weight in moisture in high- humidity environments and can take the relative humidity in a closed container down to about 40 percent. Once saturated with water, silica gel may be regenerated by heating it to 120 °C (248 °F) for 1–2 hours, releasing water as steam. This makes it reusable multiple times with very little, if any, loss of efficiency. It is hard and translucent, and remains hard when saturated with water. Our silica gel has been doped with a moisture indicator, methyl violet, which gradually changes its colour from orange when dry to green when they have absorbed some water.It is non-flammable, non-reactive and non-toxic, made of the same material found in the packets with the “do not eat” warning included in dry food packages to absorb any humidity that might cause spoilage of food since moisture encourages the growth of mould. Condensation may also damage other items such as electronics and may speed the decomposition of chemicals, such as those in vitamin pills and medicine. Silica gel may aid the drying out of electronic equipment during attempts to restore items that have been exposed to moisture accidentally.
Where to Place the Dehumidifier
Follow these placement guidelines for optimal performance:
- On the floor with the coldest air, usually the basement.
- Centrally in the room with adequate clearance for airflow.
- Avoid placing near sources of humidity like damp floors, moist carpets, or water heaters.
- with a few feet of clearance for adequate air flow to effectively pull in the damp air through the air filter with the internal fan. DO NOT place close to a wall;
- near the source of humidity, for example in a laundry room as close to the damp/wet clothes as possible but without restricting airflow.
DO NOT place your dehumidifier:
- near dust, lint, and air particles sources;
- near wall sockets or electric appliances;
- on a damp floor or moist carpet or near a water heater, stove, cooking appliances, kettles, etc. that releases water vapour or steam;
- near a large piece of furniture, boxes or storage units against a wall;
- near an open door or window – close them when using a dehumidifier.
How to Use
-
Open the package and look at the round crystals (made of silica gel) at the bottom of the Indicator transparent window.
If the crystals are orange, proceed to place the crystals at your desired location. (refer to “Why Is Dehumidifier Placement Important?”) -
If the crystals are green, it means that the crystals are wet and have absorbed moisture during transit.
-
Insert the plug connector of the power cable into the Socket on the Main Body, and the plug of the power cable into a wall socket. Switch the wall switch ON until the crystals turn orange. This slowly heats the crystals and evaporates water from them, and may require several hours.
Note: the appliance does not contain a battery, and does not require “charging”. -
Switch the wall switch OFF, detach the plug of the power cable from the wall socket and the plug connector of the power cable from the inlet on the Main Body. Proceed to place the appliance at your desired location.
-
When the crystals turn green (usually after a few days, depending on location), it means that the crystals absorbed moisture and are wet. Repeat steps 4 & 5.
How to Clean
Warning: Do not disassemble the appliance for cleaning. The appliance is
fully assembled. DO NOT operate the appliance with any of its parts
disassembled. The entire assembled unit works as a single appliance. The
appliance must only operate in the upright position. Any other position will
be hazardous.
- Turn the wall switch OFF and unplug the power cable from the wall socket.
- Clean with surface of the Main Body with a damp soft cloth. DO NOT use chemicals, such as benzene, alcohol, gasoline, etc.; otherwise, the surface of the appliance will be damaged.
Follow these steps:
- Turn the wall switch OFF and unplug the power cable.
- Clean the surface of the Main Body with a damp soft cloth. Do not use chemicals.
