  • Lion Brand® circular knitting needle size 10 (6 mm)

  • Lion Brand® stitch markers

  • Lion Brand® large-eyed blunt needle

GAUGE

14.5 sts + 20 rnds = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in the rnd (knit every rnd).
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

STITCH EXPLANATIONS

M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal strand lying between needles and placing it onto the left-hand needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop – 1 st increased. spp (slip 1, purl 1, pass slip st over) Slip 1 as if to purl, purl 1, pass slip stitch over purl stitch – 1 st decreased.

NOTES

  1. The Cowl is worked in one piece on a circular needle, beginning in the round and then changing to rows to work the shaping.
  2.  A Vikkel braid is worked onto the Cowl.
  3. Two colors of yarn are used for the stranded colorwork shown on the chart.
  4. When working stranded colorwork, carry color, not in use across WS of the piece.
  5. When changing color, twist yarns to prevent holes from forming.
  6. When working from a chart, read all rnds from right to left.

COWL

With A, loosely cast on 96 sts.
Place marker for beginning of rnd and join, being careful not to twist.
Slip marker as you come to it on each rnd.

With A, work in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) until piece measures about 10 in. (25.5 cm) from the beginning. Braid: With B, M1, slip this new st back to LH needle, with A,  ktbl of the 2nd st and leave on LH needle, with B, k the first st, slip both sts off needle then slip the B st back onto LH needle; repeat from around.

To finish Braid, cut B, leaving a 6 in. (15 cm) long yarn tail. Thread tail into blunt needle, then draw through the last st. Weave yarn tail through from bottom to top of first braid st.
With A, work in St st worked in the rnd for 7 rnds.
Next Rnd: With B, knit.
Next Rnd: With B, purl.

With A, work in St st worked in the rnd for 3 rnds.
Rnd 7: With A, k2, (M1, k4) 23 times, M1, k2 – you’ll have 120 sts.

With A, work in St st worked in the rnd for 2 rnds.
With B, knit one rnd, purl one rnd.
With A, work in St st worked in the rnd for 3 rnds.

BEGIN CHART
Continue in St st worked in the rnd, and work 10-st repeat of chart for 12 times around.

When Rnd 11 of chart has been completed, cut B and continue with A only.

SHAPE COWL

Note: Shaping is worked in rows rather than rnds.

Row 1 (RS): K2tog through back loop, k to last 2 sts, k2tog.
Row 2: P2tog, p to last 2 sts, spp.
Rep last 2 rows until 2 sts remain, then k2tog and fasten off last st.

FINISHING
Weave in ends.
