GAUGE
14 sts + 20 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS).
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

PATTERN STITCHES

SEED STITCH (WORKED OVER AN EVEN NUMBER OF STS )
Row 1 (RS): K1, p1; rep from to end.
Row 2: K the purl sts and p the knit sts.
Rep Row 2 for Seed st.

2X2 RIB AND RIDGE (WORKED OVER 32 STS)
Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Row 2: K1, (p2, k2) 7 times, p2, k1.
Rep Rows 1 and 2 for 2×2 Rib and Ridge pattern.

TEXTURE STRIPES
Row 1 (RS): Purl.
Row 2: Knit.
Row 3: Purl.
Row 4: Purl.
Row 5: Knit.
Row 6: Purl.
Rep Rows 1-6 for Texture Stripes pattern.

1X1 RIB AND RIDGE (WORKED OVER 32 STS)

Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Row 2: (K1, p1) 16 times.
Rows 3 and 4: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Rep Rows 1-4 for 1×1 Rib and Ridge pattern.

SEED AND STOCKINETTE STRIPE (WORKED OVER 32 STS)
Row 1 (RS): K1, (k5, p1, k1, p1, k1, p1) 3 times, k1.
Row 2: K1, (p1, k1, p1, k1, p6) 3 times, k1.
Rep Rows 1 and 2 for Seed and Stockinette Stripe pattern.

DASH (WORKED OVER 32 STS)
Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Row 2: K1, (p5, k5) 3 times, k1.
Row 3: Knit.
Row 4: K1, (k5, p5) 3 times, k1.
Rep Rows 1-4 for Dash pattern.

NOTES

  1. Five Strips are worked separately, then sewn together to make the Afghan.
  2. Each Strip is worked back and forth in rows using 6 different pattern stitches.
  3. A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of sts on the Afghan borders. Work back and forth in rows on the circular needle, just as if working on straight needles.
  4. Borders are worked from sts picked up along edges of the Afghan.

STRIP I

Cast on 32 sts.
Work in Seed st for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Work in 2×2 Rib and Ridge pattern for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Work in Texture Stripes pattern for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Work in 1×1 Rib and Ridge pattern for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Work in Seed and Stockinette Stripe pattern for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Work in Dash pattern for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Bind off.

STRIP II

Cast on 32 sts.
Work in 2×2 Rib and Ridge pattern for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Work in Texture Stripes pattern for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Work in 1×1 Rib and Ridge pattern for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Work in Seed and Stockinette Stripe pattern for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Work in Dash pattern for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Work in Seed st for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Bind off.

STRIP III

Cast on 32 sts.
Work in Texture Stripes pattern for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Work in 1×1 Rib and Ridge pattern for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Work in Seed and Stockinette Stripe pattern for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Work in Dash pattern for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Work in Seed st for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).

Bind off.

STRIP IV

Cast on 32 sts.
Work in 1×1 Rib and Ridge pattern for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).

Work in Dash pattern for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Work in Seed st for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Work in 2×2 Rib and Ridge pattern for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Work in Texture Stripes pattern for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Bind off.

STRIP V

Cast on 32 sts.
Work in Seed and Stockinette Stripe pattern for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Work in Dash pattern for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Work in Seed st for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Work in 2×2 Rib and Ridge pattern for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Work in Texture Stripes pattern for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Work in 1×1 Rib and Ridge pattern for about 10 in. (25.5 cm).
Bind off.

FINISHING

Sew long side edges of Strips together in order: Strip I, II, III, IV and V.

Tip

To pick up evenly spaced sts for the borders, first use markers or pins to divide each side of the Afghan into equal sections.
For the top and lower borders, divide the edge in half, then into quarters. Now, simply pick up and k39 sts in each quarter.
For the side borders, pick up and k54 sts in each quarter.

TOP AND LOWER BORDERS
From RS, pick up and k156 sts evenly spaced along top edge of Afghan.
Knit 5 rows.
Bind off as if to knit.
Rep along lower edge of Afghan.

SIDE BORDERS
From RS, pick up and k216 sts evenly spaced along one long side edge of Afghan.
Knit 5 rows.
Bind off as if to knit.
Rep along second side edge.
Weave in ends.
