GAUGE: 16 sts + 22 rows = 4 in. (10cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with A.
When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them together – 1 st decreased.

PATTERN STITCH
K1, p1 Rib (worked over a multiple of 2 sts)
Row 1: K1, p1; rep from to end of row.
Row 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Rep Row 2 for K1, p1 Rib.

NOTES:

  1. Cardigan is worked in 6 pieces: Right and Left Backs, Right and Left Fronts and 2 Sleeves.
  2. Pieces are worked in multiple yarn colors. You should be comfortable following written instructions and working from charts.
  3. Charts are worked in stranded colorwork. Carry color(s) not in use across WS of work.
  4. When following charts, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) and read RS chart rows from right to left and WS chart rows from left to right.
  5. Sts for the Ribbed Band are picked up around edge of the assembled Cardigan.
  6. A circular needle is used to accommodate the number of sts on the Ribbed Band. Work back and forth in rows on circular needle as if working on straight needles.
