You have made a good choice by buying this group handle espresso machine. You have purchased a recognized quality product. We would like to thank you for buying this machine and wish you a lot of fun with your new group handle espresso machine.

INFORMATION ON THESE OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

These operating instructions are part of the group handle espresso machine (hereinafter referred to as “unit”) and provide important information on start-up, safety, intended use and the service of the unit.
The operating instructions have to be available at the unit at all times. The instructions have to be read and applied by every person who is in charge for:

  • Commissioning
  • Operation
  • Fault correction and/or
  • Cleaning .

Keep these operating instructions and pass them on to the next owner along with the unit.
These operating instructions cannot take into consideration every conceivable use. For further information or in the event of problems that are not covered or not covered in sufficient detail in these instructions, please contact Graef customer service or your specialist dealer.

GENERAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

This unit is in conformity with the safety instructions mentioned hereinbefore. However, incorrect handling may lead to personal injury and material damage.
For safe handling of this unit, please observe the following safety instructions:

  • Before using the unit check for any external visible damage of the housing and the connecting cable and plug. Do not operate a damaged unit.
  • Repairs may be carried out only by an expert or by Graef after-sales service. Incorrect repairs may cause considerable hazards for the user. In addition, any claim under guarantee is forfeited.
  • Defective parts must be replaced by original spare parts only. Only these parts are guaranteed to meet the safety requirements.
  • This unit can also be used by children from 8 years age as well as by persons with limited physical, sensory or mental ability or with a lack of experience and/or knowledge if they are supervised or have been trained in using the unit and have understood the dangers which may result from it. Cleaning and user maintenance must not be carried out by children, unless they are 8 years or older and are supervised during the process.
  • The unit and its connecting cable have to be clear of children who are younger than 8 years.
  • Children should be supervised in order to make sure that they do not play with this unit.
  • The unit is not intended to be used with an external timer or a separate remote control.
  • Always disconnect the connecting cable by using plug; do not pull the connecting cable.
  • Do not use the unit if the connecting cable or plug are damaged.
  • Prevent that liquids get on the plug.
  • If the connecting cable is damaged, it shall be replaced by the manufacturer, the manufacturer’s customer service or a similarly qualified person only, in order to avoid potential dangers.
  • Do not open the housing under any circumstances. When touching live connections and if the electric and mechanical structure is changed, there is danger of electric shock.
  • Never touch live parts. They may cause an electric shock or even may lead to death.
  • Before connecting the unit, compare the connecting data (voltage and frequency) on the type plate with those of your energy network. These details must correspond so that no damage occurs to the unit.
  • Check to be sure that the connecting cable has been safely laid. If the cable gets caught, the unit may fall down from the work surface.
  • Packaging materials must not be used for playing. There is danger of suffocation.
  • Never use the unit in the vicinity of a heat source.
  • Never use the unit outdoors, and always keep it in a dry place.
  • Never remove the group handle filled with coffee grounds, because it is under pressure.
  • Use the appliance only if the drip tray and drip pan are properly positioned.
  • Before preparing espresso, check to see that the group handle is tightened firmly.
  • To avoid potential hazards, use the machine only for making coffee and frothing milk. Any other type of use or application is not allowed.
  • Pull the mains plug before each cleaning process.
  • Before carrying out external cleaning, allow the appliance to cool.
  • For external cleaning, do not use any aggressive or abrasive detergents and solving agents.
  • Do not scratch off stubborn soiling with hard objects.
  • Do not put the unit in the dishwasher and do not use it under running water.
  • Do not immerse the unit in water.
  • To froth milk, only use the attached milk jug or a larger vessel. Do not use a cup. Excessively frothing milk may lead to burns.
  • Never direct the steam distributor to yourself or other persons. Danger of burns!
  • Use the handle to move the steam lance and hot water lance.
  • Do not touch the tip of the steam lance and hot water lance after use as they will become hot.
  • During use, the surfaces can become hot.

INTENDED USE
This unit is not intended for commercial use. Use the unit exclusively to prepare espresso or to remove hot water/ steam. This appliance is in-tended for domestic and similar use, such as:

  • Staff kitchens in shops and offices
  • In agricultural estates
  • By guests in hotels, motels and other living quarters
  • In bed and breakfast boarding houses

IMPORTANT!
Use only in household-like areas!

Another or any exceeding use shall not be considered intended.

CAUTION
The unit can cause dangers, if is not used as intended.

  • Use the unit exclusively as intended.
  • Observe the procedures described in these operating instructions. Claims of any kind caused by damage by unintended use shall be excluded. The risk shall be borne sole by the user.

All technical information, data and notes on the installation, the operation and the care contained in these operating instructions correspond to the last status before printing, and are rendered under consideration of our previous experience and to the best of knowledge.
No claims may be derived from the specifications, illustrations and descriptions in these instructions.
The manufacturer does not assume any liability for damage caused by:

  • Non-observation of the instructions
  • Unintended use
  • Improper repairs
  • Technical modifications

IMPORTANT!
If possible, keep the original packaging during the guarantee period of the unit in order to be able to pack the unit properly in case of guarantee.

UNPACKING
When unpacking the unit, proceed as follows:

  • Remove the unit from the box.
  • Remove the packaging parts.
  • Remove any stickers on the unit. Do not remove the type plate!

DISPOSAL OF THE PACKAGING
The packaging protects the unit against transport damage. The packaging materials are selected according to the environmental compatibility and disposal-related aspects and can therefore be recycled.
The return of packaging into the material cycle saves raw material and reduces the waste volume. Dispose of the packaging material no longer needed at collection points for the “Green Dot” recycling system (in Germany).

DISPOSAL OF THE UNIT
At the end of its service life, this product cannot be disposed of in normal domestic waste. The symbol on the product and in the operating instruc-tions point out to this fact. Reuse the materials according to their marking. With the reuse, recycling or other forms of recycling of old equipment, you make an important contribution to the protection of our environment. Please ask your municipal administration for the disposal point.

REQUIREMENTS ON THE INSTALLATION LOCATION
For safe and faultless operation of the unit, the following requirements of the installation location have to be met:

  • The unit has to be placed on a solid, flat, horizontal, and non-slipping surface with a sufficient weight-carrying capacity.
  • Make sure that the unit cannot topple over.
  • Choose the location in such a way that children cannot reach the connecting cable of the unit.
  • Do not place the unit on hot surfaces, such as hotplates, or near them.
  • Never use the unit outdoors, and always keep it in a dry place.
  • The unit is not designed for installation in a wall or a built-in cupboard.
  • Do not set up the unit in a hot, wet or moist environment.
  • The socket has to be easily accessible so that the power cable can be removed easily in case of emergency.

ELECTRICAL CONNECTION
For safe and fault-free operation of the unit, the following requirements have to be met during the electrical connection:

  • Before connecting the unit, compare the connecting data (voltage and frequency) on the type plate with those of your energy network. These details must correspond so that no damage occurs to the unit. In case of uncertainty, contact a qualified electrician.
  • The socket has to be protected at least by a 10 amps circuit breaker.
  • Make sure that the connecting cable is not damaged and not laid across hot surfaces or sharp edges.
  • The connecting cable must not be stretched tightly.
  • The electric safety of the unit is ensured only when it is connected to a socket with protective conductor installed correctly. Operation on a socket without protective conductor is forbidden. If in doubt, let the house installation be checked by a skilled electrician. The manufacturer does not assume responsibility for damage which has been caused by missing or interrupted protective conductor.

EXPLANATION OF POSSIBLE DISPLAYS IN THE LCD DISPLAY

  • The unit heats up, the On/off switch flashes.
  • This means that the rotary knob for steam or hot water is not properly closed.
  • The unit is ready for operation.
  • This mode counts the time it takes to pre-pare the coffee.
  • A signal tone will sound if there is not enough water in the tank any more. Please fill in new water.
  • This displays the current setting for the brewing temperature. You have the op-tion of changing the brewing tempera-ture in +/- 1° C increments between 86° C and 98° C.
  • This shows the setting for the steam. You can select whether the steam shall be wet or dry. You can select between 7 stages.
  • During pre-brewing, the coffee grounds in the group handle are moistened before the actual extraction. You can set the duration of the pre-infusion in 5 lev-els. You can switch off the pre-infusion with level P 0.
  • Here you can set the flow rate until the next descaling.
  • You can select between 12 l, 25 l and 50 l.
  • Resets the unit to factory settings.
  • Here you can set the display language. You can choose between DE – German and EN – English.
  • This is the descaling programme for the brewing circuit.
  • This is the descaling programme for the steam circuit.
  • This is the descaling programme for the hot water circuit.

PRIOR TO FIRST USE
Prior to first use, clean the group handle (not the unit) and the water tank under running water so that potential production residues are removed. Subsequently re-insert the water tank. Screw on the rotary knobs and the hand lever. Proceed as follows:

  • Remove the slotted screw and the spring washer at the front of the holder of the rotary knobs for the steam and hot water.
  • Place the rotary knobs on the rotary knob holders.
  • Ensure that one tip of the rotary knob is pointing upwards when the steam/hot water valve is closed.
  • Insert the screw with the spring washer into the hole provided and tighten it with the enclosed screwdriver.
  • Remove the silicone cover from the hand lever holder
  • Insert the hand lever into the opening provided and turn it clockwise to tighten it.

VENTING

IMPORTANT!
Vent the unit prior to initial commissioning or after you have not used the unit for a long period of time. Do not insert the group handle for venting.

  • Insert the plug into the socket.
  • Fill the water tank with water. Maximum filling volume 2.5 litres.
  • Press
  • The unit is heating up.
  • If “GRAEF” appears on the display, the unit is ready for operation.
  • Take the milk jug and hold it under the steam lance.
  • Turn on the rotary knob.
  • Allow the air to escape until steam comes out.
  • Turn off the rotary knob again.

PREPARATION

IMPORTANT!
After switching the unit back on again, carry out an empty withdrawal (without coffee grounds) as described below in order to bring the system to temperature.

  • Fill water in the tank. 2.5 litres at the maximum.
  • Insert the desired filter insert.
  • Put in the group handle without coffee grounds (from left to right).
  • Switch on the unit.
  • Wait until the unit has heated up and “GRAEF” appears on the display.
  • Use the hand lever and allow water to run through briefly to bring the system up to temperature.
  • Press the hand lever down again to finish the process.

ESPRESSO PREPARATION

IMPORTANT!
See chapter preparation in order to warm up the group handle, system and cups. Insert the filter insert for one cup or two cups. After that, start preparing espresso.

  • After that, dry the group handle well.
  • Grind the desired amount of coffee grounds into the group handle.
  • Firmly press on the coffee grounds using the enclosed tamper. The tamper should rest evenly and not crookedly on the ground coffees when it is pressed down. This ensures even distribution and brewing over the entire surface.
  • Clamp in the group handle.
  • Place either one or two cups underneath the outlet.
  • Press for a single espresso or  for a double espresso/two espressi or use the hand lever for manual preparation.
  • The display shows the current processing time. Ideally, the processing time should be approx. 20-30 seconds. While brewing, the brewing pressure can be changed with “+” or “-”, from P7 to P1.
  • The process stops automatically at . To stop manual draw, press down the hand lever again.
  • Remove the group handle and tap out the coffee grounds in a used coffee tray.

PRESSURE GAUGE

UNDER-EXTRACTION
In case of under-extraction you will get a very thin, flat and underdeveloped coffee. The coffee flows very quickly into the cup. In this case, too little components have been dissolved out. The coffee is very light, the cream very thin, not available or the cream is very light with large bubbles.

  • Brewing pressure smaller than 7 to 8 bar
  • The coffee flows very quickly into the cup.
  • The coffee tastes sour or flat

Possible reasons for an under-extraction

Cause Solution

Grinding level too coarse (falls out of the outlet quite quickly, the cof- fee grounds feel rather coarse-gained when rubbing them between your fingers).| Grind finer, slowly approach the optimum grinding level.
Too little coffee grounds.| Use more ground grounds, note the maximum filling quantity, the grind may also need to be adjusted.
Channeling: Pressure uneven| The tamper should rest evenly and not crookedly on the compressed coffee grounds. Otherwise, channels may form in the coffee and the hot water will flow through the coffee too quickly.
Beans not fresh or coffee grounds not fresh (possibly pre-ground too long).| Ideally, store the beans in the coffee packaging closed again. Oth- erwise, light and oxygen will age the coffee. Only remove as much coffee as you need in a short time.
Beans have been roasted too light.| Lighter beans have a slightly different brewing behaviour than dark beans and are usually brewed at lower pressure. A delicious espres- so with different flavours can also be prepared by adjusting the quan- tity and grinding level. However, this can only be addressed briefly in these instructions.
Brewing temperature too low.| Adjust the brewing temperature in the menu.

OPTIMAL EXTRACTION
In case of optimal extraction, the espresso flows evenly, slowly and creamily “like honey” out of the outlet into the cup. The cream is dense and dark brown to golden brown.

  • Brewing pressure from 7-8 bar up to 12-13 bar
  • Contact pressure approx. 15 kg
  • Coffee grounds evenly distributed in the group handle
  • Optimal grinding level, not too fine, not too coarse
  • Fresh beans or freshly ground coffee grounds
  • Optimal water temperature, not too cold, not too hot

OVER-EXTRACTION
In case of over-extraction, too many bitter substances are dissolved out of the coffee. Preparation takes a long time, the coffee flows slowly and drop by drop into the cup. The coffee is very dark or the cream is dark brown to reddish and has an unpleasant and bitter or even burnt taste. The outline on the cream is very uneven, with lighter spots being found between darker areas.

  • Brewing pressure over 13 bar
  • Coffee runs slowly (brewing time well over 30 seconds) and flows drop by drop into the cup
  • The coffee tastes bitter and burnt

Possible reasons for an over-extraction

Cause Solution

Grinding level too fine (falls out of the outlet rather slowly, the coffee grounds sometimes feel like powder when you rub it between your fingers).| Grind coarser, slowly approach the optimum grinding level.
Too much coffee grounds.| Use less coffee grounds, the grinding level may also need to be ad- justed.
Beans roasted too dark.| This rarely happens with bought beans. For home- roasted beans, fin- ish the roasting process earlier.
Prior to preparation, coffee grounds clamped too long in the brewing unit.| The coffee grounds can change the flavour due to the temperatures. As a result, the coffee tastes burnt with otherwise optimal extraction. After clamping, the brewing process should be started immediately.
Brewing temperature too high.| Adjust the brewing temperature in the menu.

SETTING THE WATER QUANTITY FOR
You can change the water quantity for   cups as you wish. The LCD display shows the processing time, but the water  quantity is determined by a flow sensor.

  • Switch on the unit. The unit is heating up.
  • If “GRAEF” appears on the display, the unit is ready for operation.
  • Insert the desired filter insert.
  • Grind the desired amount of coffee grounds into the group handle.
  • Firmly press on the coffee grounds using the enclosed tamper. The distance between the upper edge and the ground coffee should be approx. 3 mm.
  • Clamp in the group handle.
  • Place one or two cups underneath the outlet.
  • Press either the button for 3 seconds.
  • The preparation starts.
  • After the desired quantity, press the button again.
  • The water quantity is saved for the selected cup.

PRESSURE PROFILE SETTING
With this group handle espresso machine, you can get the best out of your coffee thanks to the right pressure profiles.

RECOMMENDATION
Firstly, use the factory-set profile before creating print profiles. Prepare the best possible espresso (grinding level, contact pressure and grind-ing quantity must be correct). A well-adjusted coffee grinder is the ideal basis for a good espresso. You can only create your own pressure profile to improve the flavour/extraction time once all parameters have been coordinated.

  • Example: 1P2 = User 1, brewing pressure 2

PRESSURE PROFILE SETTING FOR BUTTON (EXAMPLE USER 1)

  • Press the “P” button 4 times.
  • “CU USER DEF” appears on the display.
  • Press + or – to select the user 1, 2 or 3.
  • Once you have selected the user, the respective profile appears on the display, e.g. CU USER 1 for user 1.
  • Press + and – simultaneously for 2 seconds to confirm the selected user.
  • Now press + or – to select the brewing pressure setting. You have the option of setting the same pressure for the entire extraction (FU mode) or different pressures for each of the 4 extraction phases (SE mode).

Adjustable pressure over the entire extraction (FU mode)

  • If you want to set the same pressure over the entire extraction, go to CU VPS FU.
  • Press the + and – buttons for 2 seconds to access the CU VPS FU submenu.
  • FU 1P7 appears on the display.
  • Press + or – to select the desired brewing pressure.
  • P1 is a low brewing pressure, P7 is a high brewing pressure.
  • Then confirm your selection with the “P” button.
  • GRAEF appears on the display again.

Adjustable pressure for 4 variable extraction phases (SE mode)

  • If you want to set a different pressure for each of the 4 extraction phases, go to CU VPS SE.
  • Press the + and – buttons for 2 seconds to access the SE STG 1 submenu.
  • Press + or – to select the desired brewing pressure for the first extraction phase.
  • P1 is a low brewing pressure, P7 is a high brewing pressure.
  • Subsequently press the “P“ button.
  • SE STG 2 appears on the display.
  • Press + or – to select the desired brewing pressure for the second extraction phase.
  • P1 is a low brewing pressure, P7 is a high brewing pressure.
  • Subsequently press the “P“ button.
  • SE STG 3 appears on the display.
  • Press + or – to select the desired brewing pressure for the third extraction phase.
  • P1 is a low brewing pressure, P7 is a high brewing pressure.
  • Subsequently press the “P“ button.
  • SE STG 4 appears on the display.
  • Press + or – to select the desired brewing pressure for the fourth extraction phase.

PRESSURE PROFILE SETTING FOR MANUAL PREPARATION USING THE HAND LEVER (EXAMPLE USER 1)

RECOMMENDATION
The pressure profile via the hand lever is started and ended fully automatically when the hand lever is operated. The advantage of creating a user profile via the hand lever is that two different profiles can be applied under one user profile, e.g. for two different types of coffee.

  • Press the “P” button 5 times.
  • “MA USER DEF” appears on the display.
  • Press + or – to select the user 1, 2 or 3.
  • Once you have selected the user, the respective profile appears on the display, e.g. MA USER 1 for user 1.
  • Press + and – simultaneously for 2 seconds to confirm the selected user.
  • Now press + or – to select the brewing pressure setting.

Adjustable pressure over the entire extraction (FU mode)

  • If you want to set the same pressure over the entire extraction, go to MA VPS FU.
  • Press the + and – buttons for 2 seconds to access the MA VPS FU submenu.
  • FU 1P7 appears on the display.
  • Press + or – to select the desired brewing pressure. P1 is a low brewing pressure, P7 is a high brewing pressure.
  • Then confirm your selection with the “P” button.
  • GRAEF appears on the display again.

  • If you want to set a different pressure for each of the 4 extraction phases, go to MA VPS SE.
  • Press the + and – buttons for 2 seconds to access the SE STG 1 submenu.

  • Press either for 4 seconds.
  • SE STG 1 appears on the display.
  • After reaching the desired seconds for the first extraction phase, press +.
  • SE STG 2 appears on the display.
  • After reaching the desired seconds for the second extraction phase, press +.
  • SE STG 3 appears on the display.
  • After reaching the desired seconds for the third extraction phase, press +.
  • SE STG 4 appears on the display.
  • After reaching the desired seconds for the third extraction phase, press +.
  • The times for the 4 extraction phases are saved.

TIME SETTING FOR THE EXTRACTION PHASE MANUAL VIA THE HAND LEVER

  • Press + and operate the hand lever at the same time.
  • After reaching the desired seconds for the first extraction phase, press +.
  • SE STG 2 appears on the display.
  • After reaching the desired seconds for the second extraction phase, press +.
  • SE STG 3 appears on the display.
  • After reaching the desired seconds for the third extraction phase, press +.
  • SE STG 4 appears on the display.
  • After reaching the desired seconds for the fourth extraction phase, press + and push the hand lever down.
  • The times for the 4 extraction phases are saved.

EXAMPLES OF THE EXTRACTION PHASES

  • The times are only guide values. Exact specifications cannot be made due to the factors of contact pressure, grinding level, grinding quantity, etc.

RESETTING USER PROFILE TO FACTORY SETTINGS

  • Select the user profile to be reset.
  • Press + or – until CU VPS rSt or MA VPS rSt appears on the display. Depending on what you have selected.
  • Then confirm with the “P” button.
  • GRAEF appears on the display again.

AUTOMATIC SWITCHING OFF
To save energy, the unit turns off after approximately 30 minutes when not in use (Regulation of the EU Commission).

MAKING MILK FROTH

  • Switch on the unit. The unit is heating up.
  • If “GRAEF” appears on the display, the unit is ready for operation.
  • Fill half of the supplied milk jug with milk. Make sure that it is at refrigerator temperature.
  • Direct the steam lance toward the drip tray.
  • Turn the rotary knob so that it is open and allow the condensation water to escape.
  • Turn the rotary knob so that it is closed again.
  • Turn the steam lance outwards and place the steam lance in the milk jug.
  • Check to see that the steam nozzle is just below the surface of the milk.
  • Turn the rotary knob so that it is open.
  • You will have achieved the right position if you can hear kind of a “sip noise”.
  • This might suspend for a short time, because the surface of the milk is moving. You are in the draw phase.
  • Slowly lower the milk jug as soon as the level rises.
  • Once the volume has increased as desired, enter the roll phase.
  • Guide the milk jug upwards so that the nozzle is completely immersed in the milk.
  • Now hold the milk jug as still as possible.
  • Place one hand flat against the milk jug.
  • The milk should swirl without drawing in any more air.
  • If air is drawn in again, change the position of the steam nozzle slightly.
  • The milk foam has reached the right temperature when the side of the milk jug becomes too hot to hold.
  • Turn the rotary knob so that it is closed.

IMPORTANT!
Remove the steam lance from the milk only after turning the rotary knob so that it is closed.

  • Now remove the steam lance from the milk.
  • After making the milk froth, hit the milk jug briefly onto the table top in order to remove the last coarse air bubbles. Swivelling is also helpful to distribute the froth evenly.
  • Clean the steam lance immediately afterwards to avoid milk incrustations.
  • A short burst of steam is enough to blow the milk residue out of the nozzle. Clean the outside of the nozzle with a damp cloth. Caution, the steam lance gets hot.

IMPORTANT!
To practise it, you can use the following method:

  • Pour cold water into the milk jug.
  • Add a drop of detergent.
  • Froth it up as described above.
  • If you carry out the frothing process correctly, the mixture will look like real milk foam. Please do not drink this mixture!!

HOT WATER WITHDRAWAL

  • Switch on the unit. The unit is heating up.
  • If “GRAEF” appears on the display, the unit is ready for operation.
  • Put one cup under the hot-waterlance.
  • Turn the rotary knob so that it is open.
  • The water flows into the cup.
  • When the process is completed, close the rotary knob again.

DESCALING REMINDER

The factory setting for the descaling function recall is set to 25 L. After 25 litres have been used, “KALK” flashes on the display. You can continue to use the unit as usual, but “KALK” will continue to appear on the display. Only after a complete decalcification of the three circuits, the “KALK” display goes off on the display (for this, see the “Descaling” chapter). The number of liters can be changed according to the use and hardness of your water.

  • 12 L = (In hard water areas with more than 15°dH)
  • 25 L = (In mild water areas with 7,3°dH up to 14°dH)
  • 50 L = (n soft water areas with up to max. 7,3°dH)

You can ask for your exact water hardness at the local waterworks. To find out how to change the number of litres, see page 33 under “DESCALING REMINDER”.

DESCALING
Regularly perform a decalcification, at the latest when “Kalk” appears on the display. All circuits must be descaled. We recommend to use Graef descaling tablets. You can obtain them in our online shop at www.graef.de under item No. 145618 or from your specialist dealer.

IMPORTANT!
We do not assume any liability for lack of or insufficient descaling. In this case, the warranty will become null and void.

  • Remove the water filter cartridge from the water tank.
  • Remove the group handle.
  • Unscrew the screw under the brewing unit.
  • Remove the 2 screens, the washer and the sealing ring.
  • Clean the filters and the sealing ring under running water.
  • Dry them up well and put them in a safe place together with the screw and the washer.
  • Take a small brush, clear the section in the brewing unit, and remove all old coffee remnants.
  • Fill the water tank with 2.5 litres water.
  • Place the descaling tablets in the tank and wait until they have dissolved. This may last up to 5 minutes.
  • Put a large pot underneath the brewing unit.
  • Press the button.
  • The display shows “CO KALK”.
  • Confirm this process with the „P” button.
  • The descaling process for the brewing unit starts.
  • When the descaling process is complete, “KALK” appears on the display.
  • Place a large container under the steam distributor.
  • Press the button 2 times.
  • The display shows “ST KALK”.
  • Confirm this process with the „P” button.
  • “CHECK” is shown on the display.
  • Turn the rotary knob of the steam lance so that it is completely open.
  • The descaling process for the steam lance starts.
  • Once the descaling process has been completed, “CHECK” appears on the display.
  • Turn off the rotary knob again.
  • Place a large container under the hot waterlance.
  • Press the button 3 times.
  • The display shows “HW KALK”.
  • Confirm this process with the „P” button.
  • “CHECK” is shown on the display.
  • Turn the rotary knob of the hot water lance so that it is completely open.
  • The descaling process for the hot water lance starts.
  • Once the descaling process has been completed, “CHECK” appears on the display.
  • Turn off the rotary knob again.
  • “GRAEF” is shown on the display.
  • The descaling process for all circuits is complete.
  • After descaling, allow the machine to cool down.
  • Insert the 2 screens, the washer and the sealing ring again.
  • Screw the screw back in again.
  • Insert a water filter cartridge into the water tank. We recommend that you replace it after every descaling. You can obtain replacement water filter cartridges in our online shop at www.graef.de under item No. 146242 or from your specialist dealer.

IMPORTANT!
The water filter cartridge does not provide complete protection against calcification – regular replacement of the cartridge does not mean that you can forego descaling.

RINSE AFTER DECALCIFICATION
To flush the remaining mixture out of the pipes, fill fresh water into the water tank. Then carry out the following flushing processes one after the other:

  1. Allow water to run through the brewing unit for 20 seconds (empty draw without coffee grounds).
  2. Open the steam valve for 20 seconds.
  3. Open the hot water valve for 20 seconds.

CLEANING

CLEANING OF THE BREWING GROUP

IMPORTANT!
We recommend to carry out backwashing once a week.
For cleaning, we recommend to use Graef descaling tablets. You can obtain them in our online shop at www.graef.de under item No. 145614 or from your specialist dealer.

  • If the unit is switched off, switch it on and wait until it has heated up.
  • Fill the tank with water.
  • Place the filter insert for 2 cups in the group handle.
  • Insert the blind screen and place the tablet in the notch.
  • Clamp in the group handle.
  • Make sure that the drip pan has been inserted.
  • Pull the hand lever upwards.
  • After approx. 10 seconds, press the hand lever down again.
  • Repeat this process 4 times.
  • Then take out the group handle and remove the blind screen.
  • Put in the group handle without blind screen.
  • Pull the hand lever upwards.
  • After approx. 10 seconds, press the hand lever down again.
  • Repeat this process 4 times.
  • Now empty the drip pan and insert it back again.

EXTERNAL CLEANING

  • Use a soft and moist cloth to clean the outer surfaces of the unit.
  • Use a mild detergent in case of heavy contamination.
  • Pull out the drip pan.
  • Remove the drip tray.
  • Empty the drip pan.
  • Clean both under running water.
  • Then reinsert the drip pan together with the grille.

CLEANING TOOLS
Remove the cleaning tool, which you will find to the left of the water tank.
Using the thinner end of the cleaning tool, you can clean the holes of the filter inserts as well as the holes of the steam nozzle.

FURTHER SETTINGS VIA THE “P” BUTTON
You have the option of making various settings using the “P”button. The unit must be switched on for the settings.

BREWING TEMPERATURE

  • Press the “P”button once.
  • This current setting for the brewing temperature is shown, e.g. CO TEMP 92 C.
  • To change this, press + or -.
  • Once you have selected the desired setting, wait a short moment until GRAEF appears on the display or confirm the setting directly with the “P”button.
  • If you do not want to change anything, go to the next setting by pressing the “P”button.

STEAM QUALITY

  • Press the”P”button twice.
  • This current setting is shown, e.g. DAMPF 04 (factory setting). 01 is the smallest flow level (dry steam) and 07 is the highest level (humid steam).
  • To change this, press + or -.
  • Once you have selected the desired setting, wait a short moment until GRAEF appears on the display or confirm the setting directly with the “P”button.
    If you do not want to change anything, go to the next setting by pressing the “P”button.

  • Once you have selected the desired setting, wait a short moment until GRAEF appears on the display or confirm the setting directly with the “P”button.
  • If you do not want to change anything, go to the next setting by pressing the “P”button.

LANGUAGE

  • Press the “P”button 7 times.
  • EN LANG appears on the display.
  • You can shift the language to English by pressing the + or – button.

FACTORY SETTING

  • Press the “P”button 8 times.
  • Reset appears on the display.
  • Press the + and – buttons at the same time for approx. 7 seconds.
  • If “Graef” appears on the display, the unit has been reset to the factory settings.

TWO-YEAR WARRANTY

As from the date of purchase we assume manufacturer warranty of twenty four months for defects which can be traced back to manufacturing and material defect. Your legal warranty claim in conformity with Section 437 et seq. of the German Civil Code (BGB) shall remain unaffected by this regulation. The warranty does not cover any damage which is caused by incorrect handling or use as well as defects which only slightly influence the function or the value of the unit. We do not assume any liability for damage caused by lack of or insufficient descaling and main-tenance. In this case, the warranty will also become null and void. Exclusively use Graef original descaling and cleaning tablets. Moreover, transport damage insofar we are not responsible shall be excluded from the claims under guarantee. Warranty shall be ruled out for damage, the repair of which has not been carried out by us or one of our representations. In case of justified complaints, we shall repair the defective product or replace it by a product without defects at our discretion.
