LIE YOUR WAY TO THE TRUTH!

Dr Black’s been found murdered in the mansion and it’s up to you to figure out whodunit – but first, you must figure out who’s being honest and who’s telling LIES! Chances are, you’ll have to do a little lying of your own to get to the bottom of this…
Move from room to room making suggestions for who, with what and where. Narrow down the possibilities as other players show you cards. When you think you’ve cracked the case, make your accusation and check the case file envelope to see if you’re right.

SET-UP

The first time you play, replace the demo batteries with alkaline batteries (see diagram on back).Play 2

  1. Place all 6 character tokens in their starting rooms around the gameboard, even if there aren’t 6 players.

  2. Place all weapons randomly in separate rooms.

  3. Place the Liar button in the centre of the board.

  4. Each player takes a reference card, which tells them what to do on their turn.

  5. Separate the 12 Investigation cards from the Evidence cards. Shuffle the Investigation cards and deal one to each player, face down. Place the remaining Investigation cards face down in the centre of the gameboard, where indicated.

  6. Separate the Evidence cards into 3 decks: characters, weapons and rooms. Shuffle each deck and place it face down.

  7. Slide the top card from each of those three decks into the case file envelope with no one seeing, then place the envelope underneath the Liar button.
The envelope now contains 3 Evidence cards that answer 3 questions:

    • Who did it?
    • With which weapon?
    • Where?
This is the murder mystery you need to solve!
  8. Shuffle the remaining Evidence cards and deal them, face down, to the other players. It’s okay if some players have more cards than others.

  9. Everyone takes a sheet from the notepad and a pen (not included).
Mark each player’s initial (including your own) at the top of the sheet.

  10. Secretly look at your cards and mark them on your sheet. Now you know they’re not in the envelope! Keep your sheet secret. You may look at your Investigation card, but you won’t need it until your turn (see THE INVESTIGATION CARDS).

For a 2-player game, you’ll deal the cards differently – see back page for details.

PLAY

Choose your character token. Miss Scarlett always goes first and play moves clockwise. (If no one is playing as Scarlett, the next player clockwise on the gameboard starts.)

ON YOUR TURN
  1. Roll the dice and do ONE of 4 things:
    • Move your character token a number of rooms equal to or less than the number you rolled. You can move clockwise or anticlockwise.
    OR…
    • Use a secret passage. Move your token from the room you’re in to the room the passage connects to.
    OR…
    • Stay in the room your token is already in. OR…
    • If you’re ready, make an accusation! See MAKE AN ACCUSATION on next page.

  2. Next, make a suggestion for who did it, with what and where. Say, ‘I suggest it was [any character], with [any weapon], in [the room you’re in].’
    • Move the character token and weapon into that room. They’ll remain there after your turn.
    • The player to your left secretly shows you one card from your suggestion, if they have one. If they have more than one, they choose which one to show you.
    • If they don’t have a card, they say so and the next player secretly shows you a card from your suggestion, and so on.
    • No one has a card? That’s okay.

  3. Mark your sheet with the card you were shown. It can’t be in the envelope. If you weren’t shown any cards, that could mean your suggestion is correct!
Think you know whodunit? You can make an accusation instead of taking your turn!See WIN for details.

  4. Play your Investigation card.

THE INVESTIGATION CARDS

There are 12 Investigation cards: 6 TRUTH cards and 6 LIE cards!
Truth cards contain an action that’s yours to use for that turn. Lie cards contain a list of actions, and it’s your job to play it cool and convince the other players that you possess only one of them!

Truth Card

Lie Card

  • If you have a Truth card, just read the action aloud and place it face down on the discard pile.
  • If you have a Lie card, choose one of the 3 actions on the card to lie about. Read it aloud and place the card face down on the discard pile. Try to be convincing!

If any other players think you’re lying, they can HIT THE LIAR BUTTON! If they do, you must reveal your Investigation card by turning it face up for all to see, and do one of the following:

  • If you were lying: You’ve been caught! You must choose one of your Evidence cards and place it face up in the Interrogation Room as a penalty for lying. The other players mark their sheets.
  • If you were telling the truth: The player who hit the button must show you one of their Evidence cards as a penalty for being wrong. You get to choose which card to look at, but don’t let the other players peek! Mark your sheet, then perform the action on your Investigation card.

If no one hits the Liar Button, perform the action you stated (whether you were lying or telling the truth). You got away with it!
Once all players have marked any new evidence on their sheets, place the Investigation card in the discard area in the centre of the gameboard.

5. Draw a new Investigation card.
That’s the end of your turn. The player to your left goes next.
Note: If there are no more Investigation cards in the draw pile, shuffle the discard pile and place it face down in the draw area, then draw a new card.

MAKE AN ACCUSATION
Once you think you know whodunit, make your accusation! You can only make one accusation per game, and it must be on your turn. (You don’t have to be in the room you’re going to name.) Instead of rolling the die and moving your token, use your next turn to say:

  1. ‘I accuse [character], with [weapon], in [room].’
  2. Then, secretly open the envelope. Are all three cards you named inside?

YES! You win!
Congratulations on solving the case!

NO! Uh oh, you’re wrong!
Without letting anyone see, put the cards back in the envelope. You can’t take any more turns, and you can no longer hit the Liar button, but you must show cards when other players make suggestions. The game continues until someone makes a correct accusation. If no one does, the murderer gets away with it!

2- PLAYER (OR TEAM) GAME

This variation plays like the regular game, with 2 exceptions:

  • Set-up: After you’ve completed steps 1-7, shuffle the remaining Evidence cards and place 4 of them face down randomly in any 4 rooms. (For a speedier game, place them in the corner rooms.) Then continue setting up as usual.
  • Play: If you enter a room with a card, secretly look at that card and mark your sheet before making your suggestion as usual.

DETECTIVE TIPS

Hitting the Liar Button
If you want to hit the Liar button, you must do so before a player has performed the action they claim to have done. So, if they’ve moved their token to another room, or if any players have passed a card to the left or peeked at another player’s cards, it’s too late to hit the button!

Process of Elimination
Suggestions help you figure out who did it by a process of elimination. As players reveal cards, it narrows down the possibilities of which character, weapon and room cards are in the envelope.

Evidence Cards
Use the Evidence cards in your hand to your advantage when making suggestions.
If you want to know if a player has a specific card, try naming one or two of your own cards.

Investigation Cards
You cannot play an Investigation card if you’ve run out of Evidence cards—but hold on to it in case an Evidence card is passed to you from the left.

It’s best to know which action you plan to use before playing a Lie card. All three actions are listed on the back of your reference card, so you can get familiar with them – this will help you to lie convincingly!
Marking Your Sheet
When someone shows you a card, mark it on your sheet in the first column and the column under their initial. Knowing who has which cards will help you strategise when making suggestions, and you may be able to pick up on clues when other players make suggestions as well.

TipsIn this example, Orchid is the murderer!
