Setting Up Light Bulbs
How to setup your Cync and C by GE Smart Light Bulbs in the Cync app. This article includes both types of Smart Light Bulbs: Bluetooth only and Direct Connect (Wi-Fi + Bluetooth).
If you want to set up your Cync and C by GE Smart Light Bulbs directly to the Google Home app (not using the Cync app) follow these Google Seamless Set Up instructions.
Pairing to the Cync App
Follow these steps to setup your Smart Lights in the Cync app:
- Open the Cync app.
- Select Add Devices at the bottom of your home screen.
- Select the device type Lights and follow the instructions on the app screens.
Helpful Hints
- Make sure each of your light bulbs are within 40 feet of another Cync smart device if you have more than one device. This will help keep your Smart Lights connected.
- To control your Bluetooth only lights with a voice assistant like Google Home or Amazon Alexa, you will need at least one Wi-Fi enabled smart device in your app home, such as an Indoor Smart Plug, Direct Connect Smart Light, or Wired Smart Switch.
- Direct Connect lights are Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled. This means they can be linked to your voice assistant without an additional Wi-Fi enabled device.
- If you have Direct Connect Smart Lights, make sure at least one of your lights is no more than 40 feet from your Wi-Fi router.
- If this isn’t your first time attempting set up, you may need to factory reset your device.
Troubleshooting Tips
Why can’t the app locate my lights?
- Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone.
- Check that your lights are powered on.
- Be sure to stand near the device during setup.
- Power cycle the light by turning the light off at the light switch or outlet for 30 seconds, then turn back on.
Why do I need to update my devices in app?
It is important to keep your device’s firmware updated regularly. This will
ensure that the devices are functioning properly, and all your smart products
work together to provide the best user experience.
Why did an update fail during setup?
There are many reasons why a firmware update may have failed during execution.
If a failed update occurs, try the update again. If that doesn’t resolve the
issue, then one of these common issues may be the cause:
- Ensure your phone is connected to the internet using either mobile data or Wi-Fi if you are updating Direct Connect Smart Light Bulbs.
- Check that Bluetooth is enabled on your smart phone. Bluetooth only devices need Bluetooth enabled to update firmware.
- Do not close the app while firmware updates are in progress. This will cancel the update.
- Stand closer to your device. When updating firmware, ensure you are no more than 40 feet from the device.
Why can’t I connect my Direct Connect Smart Lights to my home Wi-Fi
network?
If you’re experiencing issues connecting to your home Wi-Fi network during
setup, here are some common solutions:
- Confirm your Wi-Fi Router is powered on and broadcasting. You can check this by going to Settings on your mobile phone and looking for your Wi-Fi network.
- If your router is powered on, but not broadcasting, contact your Internet Service Provider.
- Confirm you are on a 2.4 GHz network. C by GE is not compatible with 5 GHz networks. Some routers will combine the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands into a single SSID. Cync and C by GE products are compatible with this situation for most routers.
- Check your Wi-Fi strength at the light location (you can do this by looking at the Wi-Fi signal bars on your phone)
- If you do not have a strong signal strength, move light closer to your route. If you have a Wi-Fi Repeater, move it halfway between the light and your router to improve signal strength
- Confirm you have the correct Wi-Fi network and password.
- Power cycle the light by turning it off at the switch, then turning it back on.
If these tips do not resolve your issue, you may need to factory reset your device. Resetting the device will require you to set it up in the app again. Any settings, scenes, or schedules for the device will be deleted.
