Safety instructions

General safety
WARNING! Failure to obey these warnings could result in death or serious injury.
Explosion hazard

  • The barbecue may only be repaired by qualified personnel. Inadequate repairs may cause serious hazards.
  • Do not modify the barbecue.
  • Do not remove or replace any components of the barbecue.
  • Replace porous or damaged hoses immediately.
  • Avoid twisting or kinking the gas hose.
  • The barbecue shall only be used with CE approved gas hose and regulator (recommended by your retailer) and must be connected only to a butane or propane gas cylinder (recommended by your retailer).
    – Do not use adapters or modify the barbecue to fit other connectors or cylinders.
    – Do not attempt to fit other types of gas containers or cartridges.

CAUTION! Failure to obey these cautions could result in minor or moderate injury.

Fire Hazard

  • Only adults shall operate the barbecue.
  • Do not leave the barbecue unattended when hot or in use.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher or other means suitable to extinguish a flame ready.

Burn hazard

  • Keep hands, face and hair away from burners.
  • Use long matches or long-nosed lighter to light the barbecue.
  • Do not wear loose clothing or allow long hair to hang freely while lighting or using the barbecue.
  • Keep children and pets safely away.
  • Carefully monitor all activity around the barbecue to avoid burns or other injuries.

Operating the gas barbecue safely
DANGER! Failure to obey this instruction will cause death or serious injury.
Hazard of carbon monoxide poisoning

  • Never use the barbecue indoors. The process of burning liquid gas produces carbon monoxide which accumulates inside enclosed areas.
  • Do not operate the barbecue in unventilated areas such as enclosed premises, tents, motor vehicles, motor homes, caravans or inside ships, yachts, boots and truck cabs.
  • Use outdoors only.
  • Do not use as a space heater.

Beware of suffocation

  • Operating the barbecue in an unventilated area will reduce the amount of oxygen in this area. !
    WARNING! Failure to obey these warnings could result in death or serious injury.

Explosion hazard

  • Only operate the barbecue at the pressure shown on the type plate. Only use pressure regulators with a fixed setting which comply with the national regulations.

  • The barbecue shall only be used in an above ground open air situation with natural ventilation, without stagnant areas, where gas leakage and products of combustion are rapidly dispersed by wind and natural convection.

  • Do not use the barbecue if it is leaking, damaged or does not operate properly.

  • Do not place chemicals, flammable materials or spray aerosols near the barbecue.

  • Never use a naked flame to check for gas leaks.

  • If you smell gas:
    – Do not attempt to light the barbecue.
    – Extinguish any naked flames.
    – Disconnect from gas supply.
    – Have the gas system checked by a specialist.

  • Always attach or detach the gas cylinder outdoors away from a naked flame, pilot light or other source of ignition and only when the barbecue is cool to touch.

  • Do not allow the gas hose to come in contact with any hot surfaces.

  • Inspect the gas hose for damage such as burns, chafings and kinks before each use.

Fire hazard

  • Do not operate the barbecue within 100 cm of any combustible material including walls and ceiling.
  • Gas cylinders must remain upright to prevent liquid gas flareup.
  • Do not place any objects other than food on or against the barbecue.
  • Never place the barbecue near flammable materials (paper, dry leaves, textiles).
  • Keep flammable objects away from the burner.
  • In case of fire shut off the gas supply.

Burn hazard

  • Do not move the barbecue during use.
  • Use protective gloves when handling hot components.
  • Leave the barbecue to cool down properly before you touch it with bare hands.
  • Accessible parts may be very hot. Keep young children away.
  • The use of alcohol or prescription or non-prescription drugs may impair your ability to properly assemble or safely operate this device.

Health hazard

  • Only operate the barbecue when an adult can attend to it.

Safety precautions when handling liquid gas
WARNING! Failure to obey these warnings could result in death or serious injury.

  • After use always disconnect the liquid gas cylinder.
  • Store liquid gas cylinders away from heating or cooking devices and other light or heat sources in a well-ventilated area out of the reach of children.
  • Never store liquid gas cylinders in unventilated areas or below ground level (funnel-shaped holes in the ground).
  • Never store liquid gas cylinders in buildings such as garages.
  • Any indoor storage must comply with national regulations.
  • Do not store liquid gas cylinders on their side.
  • Keep liquid gas cylinders away from direct sunlight. The temperature should not exceed 50 °C.

Intended use

The portable gas barbecue BRUCE is suitable for:

  • Outdoor barbecuing The portable gas barbecue BRUCE is not suitable for:

  • Use as a heating device

  • Operation in enclosed buildings, tents or awning tents

  • Operation on caravans, mobile homes or boats This product is only suitable for the intended purpose and application in accordance with these instructions. This manual provides information that is necessary for the proper installation and/or operation of the product. Poor installation and/or improper operating or maintenance will result in unsatisfactory performance and a possible failure.
    The manufacturer accepts no liability for any injury or damage to the product resulting from:

  • Incorrect assembly or connection, including excess voltage

  • Incorrect maintenance or use of spare parts other than original spare parts provided by the manufacturer

  • Alterations to the product without express permission from the manufacturer

  • Use for purposes other than those described in this manual
    Kampa reserves the right to change product appearance and product specifications.

Technical description

The barbecue has one burner and is supplied with reusable lava rocks. The barbecue is designed to be connected to a gas cylinder. Heat intensity can be adjusted using the gas control valve.

Setting up the barbecue

Before initial use

NOTE
Assemble the barbecue with all nuts and screws loose at first before tightening them when all the parts are assembled.

  1. Remove all packaging.
  2. To assemble the barbecue proceed as shown (fig.2, page 4 to fig.4, page 4).

Finding a suitable location
When selecting the location for setting up the barbecue, observe the following instructions:

  • Position the barbecue outdoors.
  • The place must be well-ventilated. Do not place it in a dip to prevent any gases from accumulating there.
  • Keep the barbecue protected from the wind and direct drafts.
  • The ground must be firm, level and stable.
  • Never place the barbecue near or on flammable materials, even when cooling down. Keep a distance of at least 100 cm to flammable materials.
  • The barbecue must stand on a base that can withstand heat of up to at least 80 °C. The barbecue becomes very hot when in use.
  • Remember that hot fat may drip out at the bottom of the fire bowl. Do not place the barbecue on a surface that may be damaged by the hot fat or heat generated by the barbecue.
  • Observe the safety instructions, see chapter “Safety precautions when handling liquid gas” on page 9.

Connecting to a gas cylinder

WARNING! Explosion hazard

  • Only change the gas cylinder outdoors in a well-ventilated area, away from naked flames, any other source of ignition, and other people.
  • Do not connect to a remote gas supply such as natural gas or a refillable gas cylinder.
  • Only connect the barbecue to an allowed gas cylinder type.

NOTICE!
Tighten the screw connection from the pressure regulator to the gas cylinder by hand only.

NOTE
Always use gas accessories complying with the national regulations in your country (e.g. EN 417 and EN 484):

  • Butane or propane gas cylinder (not supplied)
  • Gas pressure regulator (28 – 30 mbar for butane, 37 mbar for propane) (not supplied)
  • Gas hose (maximum length 1.5 m) (not supplied)
    See your LPG dealer or supplying dealer for these accessories.
  1. Inspect the barbecue, gas cylinder and its connections for damage, dirt or debris before connecting the gas cylinder. Do not use if either is damaged or modified.

  2. Ensure that the burner valve of the barbecue is in the “OFF” Position (turned fully clockwise) before you connect the barbecue to a gas supply.

  3. To connect the barbecue to a gas cylinder proceed as shown (fig.5, page 4 to fig.7, page 5).

  4. Ensure the regulator is correctly connected to the gas cylinder.

  5. Connect the gas regulator to the gas cylinder following the manufacturers instruction.

  6. Check that all connections are tight.

  7. Turn on the gas regulator.
    WARNING! Explosion hazard
    Do not try to detect gas leaks using a flame or a pilot light.

  8. Check all connections for gas leaks:
    – Coat all connections, using soapy water.
    – If bubbles appear, immediately turn off the gas regulator and re-tighten the connection before re-testing.
    – If bubbles appear again, do not continue to use the device. Contact an authorized service agent.

  9. If no leaks are detected, turn the regulator valve to the “OFF” position.

Using the barbecue

CAUTION! Burn hazard

  • Do not move the barbecue during use.
  • Do not touch the hot parts of the barbecue during and after use.
  • Use heatproof gloves to handle the lid.
  • Use sturdy long handled barbecue tools when cooking on the grill.
  • Leave the barbecue to cool down properly before storing.
  • After use always disconnect the liquid gas cylinder.

Lighting the barbecue

CAUTION! Burn hazard

  • Do not lean over the barbecue while lighting.
  • Only use long matches or long-nosed lighters to light the barbecue.

To light the barbecue proceed as shown (fig.8, page 6):

  1. Remove the lid from the barbecue.
  2. Ensure the burner control valve is closed by turning the knob fully clockwise.
  3. Open the valve on the regulator of the gas cylinder.
  4. Place a long, lit match through the hole in the barbecue bowl and hold it close to the burner.
  5. Carefully open the burner control valve halfway.
  6. If the burner fails to light, shut off gas supply and repeat from step 2.

Cooking tips

NOTICE! Do not use maximum heat with the lid on.
While barbecuing, observe the following cooking tips:

  • Before first use allow the barbecue to preheat for 10 minutes with the lid off.
  • During subsequent use, preheat for 5–10minutes.
  • Do not use higher setting than required. Keep a close eye on your food and adjust the burner control valve if necessary.
  • Use the lid to retain heat in the barbecue and to enhance the barbecue flavor.

Disconnecting from the gas cylinder
Before disconnecting from the gas cylinder, observe the following instructions:

  1. Ensure the barbecue is fully extinguished.
  2. Ensure that the burner valve of the barbecue is in the “OFF” Position (turned fully clockwise).
  3. Ensure the regulator connected to the gas cylinder is in the “OFF” Position (turned fully clockwise).
  4. Ensure all surfaces are cool.
  5. Disconnect the gas cylinder as shown (fig.9, page 7).

Cleaning and maintenance

Clean the barbecue after each use:

  1. To clean the lava rocks, turn the barbecue on for 10 minutes.
  2. Ensure the barbecue is cold before continuing.
  3. Disconnect the gas cylinder as shown (fig.9, page 7).
  4. Grills should be cleaned by soaking and washing in soapy water. Use a wire brush, steel wool or a scouring pad to remove stubborn spots.
  5. The surfaces of the barbecue should be washed with hot soapy water.
  6. Periodically check the burner to see it is free of insects.
  7. Clean the venturi tube on the burner very carefully, checking to see it is free of obstructions. Use a pipe cleaner to clean the venturi tube area.
  8. Check the condition of the gas hose. Replace the hose if the material is brittle or porous.
  9. Replace the gas hose when national conditions require it.

Storing

Gas cylinder
➤Follow the safety instructions (see chapter “Safety precautions when handling liquid gas” on page 9).
Barbecue
➤After cleaning, store the barbecue in a cool, dry, well ventilated place.
➤When using the barbecue after a period of storage, check for gas leaks and for obstructions in the burner before using.
