Read this manual before using

Safety instructions:

| Warning! Avoid looking directly into the light emitted by the light or shining the light into your own eyes or the eyes of another person. If the light accidentally shines into your eyes, close your eyes and move your head out of the light beam. Do not use any strongly focusing optical device to look at the light beam. In cases where the light is used in a public or commercial setting, users should be provided with training concerning the safety measures for laser light.

This device may then be used by children 8 years of age or older, persons with limited physical, sensory or mental capabilities, as well as persons with no previous experience in handling such devices, if they are supervised by a person responsible for their safety.

Attention! Risk group 2: Proven optical radiation! Do not look into the lamp for a long time during operation. May be harmful to the eyes. Danger of glare: The strong glare of the lamp can be temporary Eyesight and afterimages feel dying Irritation, authorizations or treatment commands can.

Re-charge you battery before using the light. Carry a spare light with you at all times, as the product can potentially fail unexpectedly at any time. In the event of any physical or internal battery failure, do not attempt to repair. No user-servicable parts!

Automatic cutoff BLUETOOTH:
If the lamphead is connected to the battery, without switching the light on, the Bluetooth module will automatically deactivate after 2 hours. You now can NOT turn on the light via the Bluetooth remote. Either press the lampheads switch, or reconnect the battery to start the Bluetooth module or light.

Heat generation: The housing of Betty may heat up; so make sure that you always keep the light at a safe distance to any combustible or flammable materials. Could cause fire or death! However, quiescent operation (without cooling the light housing via airflow or the like) is possible at any time and will not damage the product. When the light is being used in a stationary state, the light will be dimmed after a few minutes to reduce the light’s temperature. Continuous operation at 45 watts is only possible with air flowing over the housing!

Important! Always disconnect the battery from the light at transport or storage! Otherwise the small amount of power used by the electronics will discharge the battery, and the lamp may be switched on accidentally.

Water resistance: All components are waterproof and can of course be used under extremely severe conditions. The lamp complies with IP protection class 68 but is NOT a diving lamp and is NOT suitable for use under water.

Mounting the lamphead

Helmet mount:

No tools are required for mounting this lamp. The helmet mount is already mounted to the lighthead. You can attach this helmet light to almost any kind of helmet with ventilation openings.
First attach the thin velcro with the Lupine logo to one site of the helmetmount.

Then pull the other end of the velcro through the ventilation openings available on your helmet and fix it on the other side of the helmetmount. Direct the light into a straight forward position and tighten the velcro to avoid slipping of the lighthead during use.

With the provided extension, the battery may be carried in your jersey or backpack. The velcro strap also provides the possibility to mount the battery directly on the helmet.

Note: The adjustability of the lighthead is defined by the silicone rings at both sides of the lighthead. To always ensure flawless functionality, both black bolts must be tightened securely.

Headband:

Insert the lamphead into the FrontClick mount of the headband. (Video on our YouTube channel “LupineLights”) With the provided extension, the battery may be carried in your jersey or backpack.

Heavy Duty headband:

For an extra strong fit, the lamphead can also be mounted on the HD FrontClick headband. (Art.No. 1050)


Mounting the battery & Accessories

Battery type:

The regular battery is mounted with a velcro as shown here and on page 24. So called Smartcore batteries also come with a capacity indictator as explained on the next page.

Hardcase-Batteries:

Your battery is supplied with both a short and a long Velcro strap, coated with an anti-gliss material to ensure a secure mount. Use the strap which most closely matches your tube size.

USB One

The USB One turns your Lupine battery into a mobile power bank. Nearly every USB device can be recharged within a very short time. (Art. No. 444)

Operation

Capacity Indicator:

Audible:
To check the capacity, simply press the touch-pad once. At first an audible signal will sound to give a quick reading in 20% steps.

5 x       =  100 %
4 x       =    80%
3 x       =    60%
2 x       =    40%
1 x       =    20%

Visible:
The visible indicator uses 5 red LEDs. The LEDs can operate in two different operating states: blinking and continuous. LED meanings: A blinking LED is indicating a 10% step and a continuously glowing LED a 20% step.

Example: 3 LEDs steady glow (20 %, 40 %, 60 %)
1 LED blinking (80 %) = 70 % remaining capacity

Taillight
To run the taillight simply press the touch pad two times and the 5 LEDs will operate continuously. To switch off the taillight, simply press the pad again.

Moving light:
Press the touch pad three times to activate the moving light. To switch it off press the button another time.

Note: The capacity indicator will fade out within a few seconds. If it does not, eventually the taillight was activated and the 5 glowing LEDs do by far not mean the battery is fully charged.


Product care and storage

Transport:

Important: Always keep the battery separate from the Betty light, because otherwise the small amount of power used by the electronics will discharge the battery, and the lamp may switch on accidently. Important! Moreover, the consequent uncontrolled heat buildup could cause a fire or melt the adjacent plastic material. Could cause fire or death!

Storage:

During lengthy periods of non-use, fully charge the battery and store it in a cool, dry place, basement or the like. The battery can be kept plugged into the charger if desired.

Opening the frontcap:

Open the light housing’s front screw-on cover. Grasp the rear section of the lamp with one hand while rotating the front section of the cover to the left (counterclockwise) with the other hand. Once you have removed the cover, you will see the 4-array lens. Do not touch it.

Closing the frontcap:

Check to ensure that the O-ring on the rear section of the housing is correctly positioned.
The housing will only be waterproof if its O-ring is intact. After completing this inspection, carefully screw down the housing cover. Important note: if the thread runs smooth, the cap is in the right position. Otherwise please stop and screw back the cover and try again, otherwise you might damage the thread.

Bluetooth module:

The housing of the Bluetooth module on the underside of the lamp head may only be opened by Lupine or authorized distributors.


Operation

Initialization; voltage display:

When you connect the light to the battery, the software runs a self-test, during which all five status LEDs come on briefly. The battery voltage is then shown via the blue and green LEDs, as follows:

The blue LED blinks once for each volt; and then
the green LED blinks once for each 1/10 of a volt.

To see the battery voltage again, unplug the light from the battery and then plug it in again.

For example, if the blue LED blinks seven times and the green LED then blinks five times, this means that the measured voltage under load is 7.5 V. This display helps you to assess the actual level of the battery prior to use.

Guidelines in this regard:
More than 8.0 V: the battery is fully charged. 7.1 to 7.9 V: the battery needs charging or is old. 6.5 to 7 V: the battery is not ready for use.

Switching on/ Changing levels:

Press the power switch once to turn the light on; two blue LEDs will glow, indicating the 22W dimming level. Press the button rapidly to cycle through other power levels. Refer to the chart on page 40 for the exact meaning of the five (RGB) monitor LEDs, as well as instructions for programming options additional to the factory-set 3-step mode.

Luminous performance:

The maximum lighting output can only be achieved with enough airflow to cool the lamp. High ambient temperature and low airflow will signal the controller to reduce power to the LEDs, thus reducing their brightness, to avoid overheating the LEDs and other electronics. The actual reduction is indicated by the status LEDs: e.g., after a period of low airflow conditions, 4 of the 5 blue status LEDs will be lit, indicating that the power has been reduced from 45W to 34W in order to protect the unit from heat damage.

Center-LED:

The Center-LED will only work in a special mode, otherwise just the outer 6 LEDs will run. How to switch on the Center-LED: see page 40.

Switching the lamp off:

To switch off the lamp, hold the button down longer.

SOS function:

To activate the SOS function, hold the button down for three seconds and then release it. If you don’t press the button again, the lamp will continue to emit the international SOS signal until the battery is completely discharged. To deactivate the SOS function, press the button again. You can then use the lamp in a normal fashion.

Note: Use the SOS signal ONLY in an emergency. Thanks to the light’s high luminance, the signal is visible for miles around and will continue flashing for hours if not shut off. Improper use of the SOS signal is punishable by law.

Discharged battery capacity:

When you shut off the lamp, the discharged battery capacity is shown via flashing of the blue LED and then the green LED. This information can only be displayed once as it is deleted when you unplug the battery.

The blue LED blinks once for each Ah (ampere hour); and then
the green LED blinks once for each 1/10 of an Ah.

For example, if the blue LED blinks four times and then the green LED blinks six times, this means that 4.6 Ah were discharged from the battery.

Lamphead display:

The remaining capacity will be shown in detail on any Lupine SmartCore battery (see page. 33). Additionally, the LEDs on the back of the lamp-head change color to indicate decreasing voltage. When battery voltage drops below a certain level, the Backlight LED changes from blue to green. Near the end of the battery’s charge, the light turns red.

Reduce speed!

Note: The battery time remaining after the green or red LED backlight turned on depends on total battery capacity, the ambient temperature, the battery’s age, and which setting is used. Moreover, since the voltage curve of a Li-Ion battery is not proportional to the power left in the battery, you need to learn how to interpret the relevant displays for your specific battery.

Empty battery and reserve power:

When the battery is completely discharged (all 5 red LEDs blink with a red backlight on), the light will shut down after flashing a few times!

To activate the battery’s reserve power, doubleclick the switch. This will give you a few minutes more light, whose exact amount depends on the age of your battery. The light emitted in reserve-power mode is a very low beam so as to conserve power and keep the light going as long as possible. The red 5 LEDs slowly flash when reservepower mode is activated and the backlight will be red. When the reserve power has been completely discharged, the light will shut down ­- which means that you to slow down.

Note: If only 2.0 W or less was used, reserve power is not available!

Safety advisory: Do not switch on the light when the battery is discharged, as this will invariably damage the battery. Recharge the battery as soon as possible to avoid a deep discharged battery.

Safety advisory: When the battery is completely discharged ( all 5 red LEDs blink with a red backlight on), the light will shut down after flashing a few times. In such a case, you should stop riding your bicycle immediately.


Bluetooth remote control

The Bluetooth Remote comes together with the Peppi V5 barmount (helmet & bikelights) or a bracelet (Headlamps). On the bike, the best way to mount the remote is directly next to your grips so you have full control an don’t need to take off your hands while riding. The bracelet can be attached to a lot of other things like ski poles, too.

Connecting the transmitter to the light:

By default, your lamp has already been connected to the transmitter.
For establishing a connection, the receiving mode in the lamp has to be activated.

Keep the lamp’s button depressed until five green LEDs light up and let the button go. The receiving mode is now active for 30 seconds. During this time, press the remote control’s button until the remote does light up green. release the button

Several lamps and one transmitter:

It is possible to connect up to five lampheads to a single remote switch.

Several transmitters and one lamp:

Up to 4 transmitters may be connected to one lamp. The transmitter-specific codes are stored in the lamp according to a “first in first out” principle. If you want to use only one transmitter again to control your lamp, it might be necessary to connect this transmitter up to 4 times with the lamp until all other codes in the list will have been overwritten.

Enable/Disable the remotes permanent LED light:

Keep the remote button depressed: The LEDs must turn green then blue again. release the button

Low battery warning from lamphead:

The remote mirrors the lamphead’s low battery warning.
A fully charged or partly discharged battery will be shown by a red LED light.
There will be no warning if the remotes button cell itself is empty.

Low button cell:

With decreasing voltage, the remotes LEDs will also become weaker, to the point the remote does not work anymore. Also cold temperature does reduce the battery voltage.

Transmitter battery change:

For changing the battery, loosen all 4 screws at the bottom of the transmitter using a T5 star drive key.
Insert the new CR 2032 button cell as shown and close the transmitter again.
Tighten the screws until the blue sealing is visibly squeezed.

Customizing the brightness levels

You have the option to setup to 4 brightness levels, in any sequence

  1. Press and hold the button until one green LED lights up.
    release the button

  2. The range of brightness levels you can select will begin automatically to cycle, as shown below.

  3. Press the button at the brightness level you want.

  4. Upon releasing the button, the sequence of brightness levels automatically restarts, allowing you to set a second level in the same manner as the first click set-up. This process can be repeated up to four times, but will stop when you quit making further selections, thus allowing your light to operate in 1-step, 2-step, 3-step,-or 4-step modes.

Note: All changes to the light can also be made by the free Light Control App for IOS and Android. With the App it is also possible to remote control the light and the status monitor offers additional informations.

Recover factory settings:
  1. Press and hold the button until 5 red LEDs turn on.
    release the button

  2. Disconnect the battery, and all factory settings will be restored.

  3. Reconnect the transmitter with the lamphead see page 39.

SOS:
SOS will continue until the battery is empty. Improper use of the SOS signal is punishable by law.

RVLR:
This mode includes an additional slow flash mode.

Alpine SOS:
Alpine SOS will continue until the battery is empty. Improper use of the SOS signal is punishable by law.

Flash 15hz: (Disorientation)
This mode is extremely irritating and may by no means be misused.

Center:
Low beam made by the center LED only.


Special functions

Additional beams for special applications:

Changing the factory-set SOS function.

It is possible to change the factory-set SOS signal to different brightness levels, or to special-purpose RVLR or Alpine Emergency signals.

  1. Press and hold the button until 2 green LEDs light up.
    release the button

  2. The range of brightness levels you can select will automatically begin to cycle, as shown.

  3. Press the button when the brightness level you want is presented.

Depressing the button for 3 seconds will initiate the flash mode selected, and the lamp will continue flashing in that mode until the battery is completely discharged.

Alternative Capacity Indicator (lamphead):
  1. Before activating the alternative capacity indicator, your battery must be fully charged.

  2. Press and hold the button until 3 green LEDs light up.
    release the button

  3. The range of battery capacities you can choose from will start automatically.

You must approximate the correct range for your battery; e.g., for an 13.2Ah you would select 14 Ah (1 red LED)
Similair to our SmartCore batteries the red LEDs on the lamphead will now approximatley show the remaining capacity.

Attention! When the lamp-head is disconnected from a battery, the indicator will not work correctly until the battery is fully recharged.

Adjusting the low-battery warning LEDs:

Use this program to adjust the onset of the low-battery warning.

  1. Press and hold the button for until 4 green   LEDs light up.
    release the button.

  2. The threshold can be selected as shown below.

Recover factory settings:
  1. Press and hold the button until 5 red LEDs turn on.
    release the button.

  2. Disconnect the battery, and all factory settings will be restored.


Charger One

Charger One:

Before seriously using your flashlight for the first time, the battery requires charging. For this purpose, please unscrew the battery tank from the flashlight head. The charging socket is located on top of the battery. You can either use the Charger One with the power adapter or the 12 V charging cable.

A The Charger One comes with four different charging modes. At the push of the button you can switch between these.

  1. Li-Ion “charging” mode (standard)
    The Charger One automatically stops the charging process. The display will show “Full”.

  2. Li-Ion “discharge” mode
    In order to discharge the battery. The display will show you the discharged capacity.
    Attention: Do not store an empty battery!!!

  3. Li-Ion “discharge/charge” mode
    This mode gives you the possibility to discharge and charge the battery in one go. The program can be used after recalibrating a Smartcore battery.

  4. Li-Ion “50% storage” mode
    With this program the battery will be charged to 50% of the capacity. This is perfect for storing the battery over a longer period of time.

Warning! This charger is to be used to charge rechargeable Li-Ion batteries only. It is NOT suitable for charging NiMH batteries!
Do NOT use non-rechargeable batteries. ­- Risk of explosion!


Troubleshooting

Problem Cause Solution

The light does not come on and the power LEDs do not flash when the battery is plugged into the lamp.| Extremely discharged battery.
Battery not plugged into the light or not plugged in properly.| Charge the battery. Before doing so be SURE to read the “Battery cannot be charged” section below.
Check all plug contacts.
With the battery plugged in, the power LEDs do not come on, but the PCS LEDs flash.| Faulty LED unit.| Replace the LED unit.
