Features & Benefits
- Cast iron releases some iron into food which has health benefits.
- Cast-iron pre-season products offer heat retention.
Cooking Surfaces
- Cast Iron cookware can be used on all cooking surfaces, including on the stovetop, in the oven, under the broiler, and on the grill. When using cast iron cookware on ceramic or glass-topped cooking surfaces, avoid dragging the cookware across the surface as this can cause damage to the cooking surface. Always lift the cookware while moving it on these types of surfaces.
Before Use
- Before first use, rinse with hot water and dry thoroughly.
- For best results, apply a small amount of vegetable oil to the cooking surface of the pan before each use. Allow the pan to properly pre-heat low to medium heat before cooking.
- Once the pan is properly pre-heated, it is ready for use. Note: Surface may be sticky upon first use.
- For superior cooking results, cook using medium heat.
Care Instructions
- The product is oven safe up to 500 °F (260 °C).
- Always select the burner size that closely matches the bottom of the pan.
- Avoid burners or heating elements that are larger than the bottom of the cookware.
- Always use oven mitts or pot holders while moving or removing the cookware from the stovetop or oven.
- Always place the cookware on a heat-resistant surface when it is hot (trivet or cooling rack).
- Breaking may occur if dropped onto a hard surface.
- Use heat-resistant silicone, plastic, or wooden utensils to avoid scratching the cooking surface.
Cleaning Cast Iron
-
After cooking, simply wipe clean using a stiff brush and hot water, rinse, and towel dry the pan.
NOTICE Pan can also be dried by heating on low heat over the stovetop. -
Hand washes only. Harsh cleaning
detergents should never be used in
cleaning your cast iron cookware. -
Never wash in the dishwasher.
-
In order to prevent rusting, the towel dries immediately after use, and apply a light coat of oil to the cooking surface while the pan is still warm. Do not let cast iron cookware air dry.
-
To remove stuck-on food, boil water in a pan for a few minutes to loosen residue followed by a rinse and towel dry pan.
-
Do not put cold water into the hot pan; this can cause the pan to crack or warp.
-
Store cast iron cookware in a cool, dry place. It is recommended to store cookware with the lid off to prevent rusting.
Caution
If you are new to cast iron cookware the following will prove helpful:
- Always pre-heat cast iron cookware over low to medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes before adding oils or other liquids.
- Never leave pans unattended during preheating.
- Never place cast iron cookware in the microwave.
- Always allow hot cookware to cool to room temperature before immersing in water.
- The product can be placed in the oven (with the exception of utensils with wooden or bakelite handles).
- It is possible that knobs and handles may become unscrewed with use. Check from time to time and retighten screws if necessary.
- You should never cook tomatoes and other acidic foods in cast iron.
- If the seasoning is very good, you can prepare dishes with tomatoes and other acidic foods, but it’s best to wait until your piece is well-seasoned.
- Recipes including very acidic foods, like tomatoes and citrus juices, should not be cooked in seasoned cast iron until the cookware is highly seasoned.
- The high acidity of these foods will strip the seasoning and result in discoloration and metallic tasting food.
How To Re-Season
If the cooking surface starts to stick or surface is dull or gray in color, repeat the seasoning process:
1. wash the pan with hot, soapy water and a stiff brush. This is the only
time soap is recommended for use. Rinse and towel dry completely.
2. Apply a thin, even coating of cooking oil to the cookware; inside and out.
3. Set oven temperature to 350 °F (177 °C) and place aluminum foil on the
bottom rack of the oven to catch any dripping.
4. Place cookware upside down on the top rack of the oven, and bake the
cookware for at least one hour.
5. After one hour, turn the oven off and let the cookware cool in the oven.
6. Once cooled, store cookware in a dry, cool place uncovered.
