User Information

STIHL Cut-Retardant Clothing

Read this user manual carefully and keep all product information in a safe place. To ensure the highest possible level of protection and comfort when using this personal protective equipment (PPE), it is essential to observe the following information. For cut protection clothing with high-visibility protection, also observe the user manual for highvisibilitymn protection.

Protection effect

This STIHL cut protection clothing is intended to protect you from chainsaw injuries. The design of the clothing specifies which part is protected, see table A.1. In the marked area of the jacket or trousers, a multi-layer cut protection package is integrated in the cut protection clothing. If the chainsaw cuts into the clothing, loosely woven-in blocking fibres are ripped out which block the saw chain. Before each use, check the cut protection clothing for perfect condition (e.g. by visual inspection) to ensure maximum protection effect. Immediately dispose of altered or damaged cut protection clothing.

WARNING

  • This cut protection clothing is designed for wearing when operating a chainsaw. It does not provide protection against other hazards (for, instance, other areas of use such as the construction industry, contact with power/current, when operating cut-off saws, power tools, saws for other materials than timber, high-pressure washers, etc.).
  • No cut protection equipment can providetotal protection against injuries from the chainsaw. The degree of protection depends on a large number of factors, e.g. working technique,m chainsaw power, sharpness and speed of the chain, as well as the angle and contact force with which, the saw chain hits the personal protective equipment.
  • The effects/damage which arecaused by a chain speed of 20 m/s under test conditions according to the standard do not necessarily correlate with the effects caused by a handheld, chainsaw which is operated at 20 m/s. This must be taken into account together with the experience of the user when selecting suitable PPE.
  • The cut protection clothing may not offer sufficient protection from certain modified chains or chains not primarily intended for forestry (e.g. rescue chains). In case of doubt, the user must contact the saw chain manufacturer.
  • This cut protection clothing is no substitute for a safe working technique. Incorrect use of a power tool can result in accidents. It is therefore essential to observe all local safety regulations, standards and ordinances as well as the safety precautions and safety instructions given in the instruction manual of your power tool.
  • If the cut protection clothing is contaminated with acid, solvents, fuel, oil, grease, or other combustible and flammable materials during work, it may ignite, or the proper function of the cut protection layer may be impaired. Avoid contact with hot objects (e.g. exhaust muffler) and other heat sources (e.g. open flames, heaters). Change, wash or discard cut protection clothing in keeping with the degree of contamination.
  • Pointed and sharp objects may damage the material. Avoid contact of the cut protection clothing with pointed and sharp objects (e.g. saw chains, metal tools, thornbushes).
  • The cut-resistant layer in protective trousers can provide protection only if it has not been pinched, twisted, or modified. Use proper working techniques, and observe the instructions for correct use of additionally attached accessories such as harnesses or other equipment strapped around the trousers.
  • Modifications to the product may deteriorate its protective function. For this reason, never modify the cut protection layer and cut protection material. Dispose of clothing which has been cut with a saw once, or which has been damaged or modified.
  • Cut protection clothing requires the correct care and should be cleaned regularly. Improper cleaning and care may reduce the protective effect. The care and cleaning instructions in this user manual are mandatory. Wash cut protection clothing before wearing it for the first time.

Choosing the right size

When choosing the right size, ensure that:

  • the clothing is selected according to the STIHL size tables. The cut protection clothing must not be too tight or be cumbersome when working;
  • the jacket sleeves overlap the gloves and leave no unprotected area between sleeve and glove;
  • the trousers/chaps legs overlap the shoe and leave no unprotected area between the trousers/chaps and the shoe. In some countries, trousers are offered with additional leg length, or custom-made.

Working safely with cut protection clothing

Only fully closed cut protection clothing offers maximum protection. To ensure that the wearer does not get too hot, STIHL protection clothing is equipped with ventilation zippers or ventilationinserts. In warm weather, take off cut protection jackets or chaps during breaks. Chaps are designed for occasional use. They must be attached to the leg by means of straps (design B) or zippers (design C) in such a way that they cannot twist in case of contact with the saw chain. Straps and zippers must always be fully closed during work. A harness worn under the cut protection jacket must lie close to the body. The right-hand side and left-hand sidem, arm protections are marked with “R” = right arm and “L” = left arm. Observe the marks on the arm protection. The thumb must be inserted in the hole in the arm sleeve to prevent twisting. Use arm protection in combination with cut protection gloves only.

Cleaning and Care

The protective clothing should be cleaned every week if worn daily with average soiling. Wash the clothing immediately after use if it is heavily soiled. Be sure to turn the cut protection layer inside for washing! Wash with similar colors. We recommend washing in standard color and delicate laundry detergent. In case of heavy soiling, add a tablespoon of grease solvent (soap) to, the detergent. Wash separately, depending on the type of soiling. For cut protection clothing with high-visibility protection, ensure that no optical brighteners are used. Close zippers and Velcro fasteners before washing. After washing, pull the cut protection clothing into shape while it is still wet and dry it in the air. Do not iron cut protection clothing. However, ironing can reactivate the water-repellent beading effect. Care instructions (also see care instruction label):

  • 60 °C gentle wash, gentle spin (max. 400 rpm).
  • Do not bleach
  • Iron at max. 110 °C (setting 1).
  • Do not dry clean.
  • Do not tumble dry.

Note: Improper cleaning and care and processes (e.g. excessively high wash temperatures or tumble drying) deviating, from the instructions on the label maym reduce the protective effect or reduce the wearing comfort.

Materials used

  • The materials used (top layer, lining, cut protection layer etc.) are in compliance with Ökotex Standard 100. The material is listed on the care label.

Cut protection class and cut protection area

For cut protection clothing, the protection class is identified by the cut protection class. The cut protection class indicates the chain speed during the testaccording to standard conditions: classm0 = up to 16 m/s, class 1 = up to 20 m/s, class 2 = up to 24 m/s, class 3 = up to 28 m/s. Class 3 offers higher cut protection than class 2, class 2 higher cut protection than class 1, and class 1 has higher cut protectionmthan class 0.

The pictogram shows the type of protective clothing. Cut protection clothing is indicated with a saw on the product and on the care label, see also table A.1. Below/above the icon, the valid standard and the year of publication of the standard are shown; below it, the respective cut protection class achieved is shown (see table A.1). The design describes the specified protection area of the personal protective equipment (see table A.1) and is indicated on the product’s care label. In addition to table A.1, number 6: There is currently no harmonized/specified standard for arm protectors These STIHL arm protectors have been tested and approved in accordance with the harmonized/specified cut protection standard for upper body protection.

Transport and storage

Cut protection clothing must be protected from damage during transport. Store (e.g. in the supplied sales packaging or similar) in a dry, well-ventilated room. Avoid extremes of temperature, high, humidity, and exposure to aggressive substances, liquids or UV radiation (e.g. in a display window).

Duration, limits of use and disposal

Cut-resistant apparel and cut-protection materials are subject to a certain degree of aging. It depends primarily on the respective type of utilization and amount of use and wear, but also on other criteria (for example, periodic maintenance, repair, and proper storage). The period of usage begins on the first day of use. For professional use, the maximum lifetime is approx. 12 to 18 months, and for occasional use approx. 5 to 10 years.

  • The date of manufacture (month/year) is indicated on the care label Dispose at textile recycling collection points (old clothing) or in household waste.

Repairs

Only the outer shell may be patched or shortened.

  • Do not repair, alter, shorten, or pierce the cut protection layer, and do not sew through it.
  • The protective effect is reduced or eliminated if the cut protection insert is altered in any way.
  • Cut protection clothing in which the cut protection insert has been damaged or altered must no longer be used.

STIHL recommends you have all repairs done by qualified and competent tailors.

STIHL High Visibility Warning Clothing

This STIHL product is equipped with high-visibility protection. Safety instructions and information relating exclusively to high-visibility protection are described in this user manual. In addition to this user manual, observe the user manual for protective work clothing or cut protection clothing. Read this user manual carefully and keep all product information in a safe place. To ensure the highest possible level of protection and comfort when using this personal protective equipment (PPE), it is essential to observe the following information.

Protective effect

Clothing with high-visibility protection is protective equipment for persons working on the street or in other traffic areas. It makes its user noticeable and visible from a sufficient distance, as the individual’s activity makes them a person at risk. The user is visible during the day and at night due to the fluorescent background material (for daytime visibility) and the retro- reflective strip (nighttime visibility). Before each use, check the clothing with high-visibility protection to make sure it is in flawless condition (e.g. by visual, inspection) to ensure as much protection as possible. Alterations, damage, or dirt reduce the protective warning effect. Immediately dispose of altered, damaged or very dirty clothing with high-visibility protection.

Safety information

WARNING

  • This clothing with high-visibility protection is designed for the use described above. There is no protective effect against other hazards.
  • Clothing with high-visibility protection requires the correct care and should be cleaned regularly. Improper cleaning and care may reduce the protective effect. The care and cleaning instructions in this user manual are mandatory.

Size adjustment

Clothing with high-visibility protectionm may only be adapted to the user’s size if the specifications of EN ISO 20471 regarding minimum size and minimum spacing of the reflective strips remain guaranteed. Do not shorten the shortest clothing size further.

Working Safely with High-visibility Clothing

Maximum protection is only given if the clothing with high-visibility protection is, fully closed when worn, and is not covered by other clothing or accessories. The sleeves and trouser legs must not be turned up, as the reflective material would then no longer be visible and the protective effect would be impaired.

Cleaning and Care

Wash clothing with high-visibility protection using commercially available colorsafe and mild detergents without optical brighteners. Do not wash with other, non-colourfast or very dirty clothing. For cut protection clothing, be absolutely sure to turn the cut protection layer inside for washing.

Warning Protection Class and Warning Area

The protective effect of clothing with high-visibility protection is specified bythe respective high-visibility protection class. The warning protection class specifies the minimum area of visible material in m²:

  • Background material: class 1 = 0.14,
    • class 2 = 0.50, class 3 = 0.80
  • Retroreflective material: class
    • 1 = 0.10, class 2 = 0.13, class
    • 3 = 0.20

This means that class 3 offers a higher level of warning protection than class 2, and class 2 offers a higher level of warning protection than class 1. By wearing a STIHL class 2 high-visibility jacket with, STIHL class 2 high- visibility trousers, warning protection class 3 is achieved through this combination (see table B.1). X = warning protection class. Please refer to the sewn-in labels on the individual garments for the warning protection class. Special materials to protect against wet, thorns, impact, etc. may restrict the breathability in that area.

Transport and Storage

  • For transport and storage, follow the instructions in the user manual for cut protection clothing or protective work clothing.

Service Life and Disposal

The fluorescent background materials and reflective strips used are tested through at least 25 cleaning cycles. The maximum number of cleaning cycles is stated in the care label. The stated maximum number of cleaning cycles is not the only influential factor in terms of the service life of the clothing. The service, life also depends on use, care and storage, and can be reduced by wear, damage or bleaching. Clothing with high-visibility protection must be replaced and, disposed of if it is soiled or damaged to such an extent that the reflectiveness of the background material or the reflective material is no longer guaranteed, or it has gone through 25 cleaning cycles. The date of manufacture (month/year) is indicated on the care label. Dispose at textile recycling collection points (old clothing) or in household waste.

Repairs

  • Repairing clothing with high-visibility protection is permitted. The specifications of EN ISO 20471 must be observed. STIHL recommends you have all repairs done by qualified and competent tailors.

Spare Parts

  • Repair materials and other accessories are available on request from the STIHL servicing dealer. The above information applies to all STIHL products listed in Table B.1.
