- Make reference marks on the locking plate for correct orientation.
- Use a lock plate tool to relieve plate tension and remove the wheel locking plate.
- Remove the snap ring while the lock plate is compressed.
- Remove the turn signal cancelling cam, hazard flasher button, turn signal lever screw, and lever.
- Remove turn signal switch mounting screws.

REMOVAL/INSTALL OF IGNITION LOCK (924-790) Buick 1996–78, Cadillac 1992–78, Chevrolet 2002–1978, GMC 2002–1978, Jeep 1993–85, Oldsmobile 1996–78, Pontiac 1996–78
General Tech Tip
- A steering wheel puller and a steering column lock plate removal tool are required to perform this repair. These can be purchased or rented from your local auto parts store.

Removal Instructions
- STEP 1: Disconnect negative battery cable.
- STEP 2: Remove horn pad. NOTE: The horn pad displayed may have different attaching points from your vehicle, as they vary among models and years.
- STEP 3: Remove horn contact button.
- STEP 4: Remove the steering wheel nut retainer and nut.
- STEP 5: Using a marker, make reference marks on steering wheel and shaft to maintain original alignment.
- STEP 6: Remove steering wheel with appropriate puller.
- STEP 7: Using a marker, make reference marks on locking plate to maintain correct orientation.
- STEP 8: Removing wheel locking plate by using lock plate tool to relieve plate tension.
- STEP 9: Remove snap ring while plate is compressed.
- STEP 10: Remove turn signal cancelling cam.
- STEP 11: Remove hazard flasher button
- STEP 12: Remove turn signal lever screw and lever.
- STEP 13: Remove turn signal switch mounting screws
- STEP 14: It is not necessary to completely remove switch from column. Lift turn signal switch out of way to gain access to lock cylinder release tab.
- STEP 15: Remove key buzzer switch, if equipped. This can be gently pried off with a pick or similar tool
- STEP 16: Ensure ignition is turned to the off position.
- STEP 17: Remove lock cylinder retaining screw and pull lock cylinder from the column
Installation Instructions
- STEP 1: Install new ignition lock into column and reinstall and tighten retaining screw.
- STEP 2: Reinstall key buzzer switch, if equipped.
- STEP 3: Reinstall turn signal switch and mounting screws.
- STEP 4: Reinstall turn signal lever screw and lever.
- STEP 5: Reinstall hazard flasher button.
- STEP 6: Reinstall turn signal cancelling cam.
- STEP 7: Reinstall wheel locking plate by using lock plate compression tool to compress plate tension and install snap ring. Be sure to reference marks made during removal to maintain original orientation
- STEP 8: Reinstall steering wheel using marks made during removal to maintain original orientation.
- STEP 9: Reinstall steering wheel nut retainer and nut.
- STEP 10: Reinstall horn contact button.
- STEP 11: Install horn pad.
- STEP 12: Reconnect negative battery cable.
