REMOVAL/INSTALL OF WINDOW REGULATOR (740-179)
Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator 2003–06

General Tech Tips:

  • Use painter’s tape rather than duct tape to secure window. It will not damage paint or leave sticky residue.
  • A plastic pry tool is useful. It will not easily damage delicate trim like a screwdriver or metal pry bar.
  • The replacement regulator should have a liberal amount of grease on slide area. If there is not much grease present, white lithium grease works well to lubricate the slide area.
  • Aftermarket window tinting can cause the window to travel slower and put additional strain on the window regulator assembly.
  • Window run channels should be cleaned and lubricated before installation of a new window regulator assembly. Silicone spray works well.

Tools required for removal and installation of window regulator and motor assembly:

  • Silicone spray lubricant
  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Pick
  • Saddle cup assembly, tape, or wedge to hold window in place
  • Flat-blade screwdriver or plastic pry tool
  • 10mm socket or driver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Grease pencil or marker
  • T-15 Torx bit socket
  • T-20 Torx bit socket
  • 3” socket extension
  • 10mm deep well socket

PLEASE WEAR SAFETY GLASSES!

Removal Instructions

STEP 1: Using a Phillips head screwdriver, remove the interior door trim panel retaining screws.

STEP 2: Using a trim panel removal tool, remove the interior door handle bezel assembly.

STEP 3: Using a trim panel removal tool, remove the switch panel assembly.

STEP 4: Disconnect the switch panel assembly.

STEP 5: Using a pick or a small flat-blade screwdriver, remove the interior door trim panel retaining screw cover.

STEP 6: Using either a T-15 or T-20 Torx bit socket, remove the interior door trim panel retaining screws.

STEP 7: Once all of the interior door trim panel retaining screws have been removed, lift the interior door trim panel in an upward and outward motion to remove the panel.

STEP 8: Remove the water vapor barrier.

STEP 9: Disconnect the interior door handle by using a medium flat-blade screwdriver and prying up on the regulator to release the door handle shaft. NOTE: Do not worry if you break the mounting tab off of the regulator. The new regulator is equipped to use the original door handle.

STEP 10: Temporarily connect the window switch to lower the door glass, exposing the two (2) bolts mounting the door glass to the window regulator. You will be using a 10mm socket with extension and a ratchet.

STEP 11: Once the door glass has been separated from the window regulator, manually slide the door glass into the closed position and hold in place with a saddle cup assembly, painters tape, or a wedge.
STEP 11a: Disconnect the jumper harness assembly.

STEP 12: Disconnect the window lift motor connector.

STEP 13: Using a T-15 or T-20 Torx bit, remove the four (4) speaker attaching screws.

STEP 14: Disconnect and remove the door speaker.

STEP 15: Using a 10mm socket and ratchet, remove the window regulator attaching hardware.

STEP 16: Remove the window regulator assembly through the main access hole.

STEP 5: Manually slide the door glass to align the door glass mounts on the window regulator and attach using a 10mm socket, ratchet, and 3” extension. CAUTION: DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE GLASS MOUNTS. FAILURE TO DO SO COULD RESULT IN GLASS BREAKAGE AND GLASS MOUNT FAILURE.
STEP 6: Attach the door handle assembly onto the window regulator. CAUTION: USE EXTREME CARE WHEN INSTALLING THE DOOR HANDLE. GENTLY PRY DOOR HANDLE
MOUNT TAB. INSERT THE BOTTOM OF THE DOOR HANDLE SHAFT AND GENTLY PUSH INTO PLACE. FAILURE TO USE EXTREME CARE WILL RESULT IN A BROKEN WINDOW REGULATOR.

Once the interior door trim panel is in place, loosely bolt the interior door trim panel into place.

STEP 13: Attach the interior door trim panel attaching hardware.
NOTE: Be sure to leave the interior door trim panel loose so that you can adjust the interior door trim panel in the final step.

STEP 19: Install the interior door trim panel retaining screw cover.

STEP 20: Verify that the window regulator is operating properly and that the door glass is sliding smoothly.
