Product Usage Instructions

Condition:

On certain Model S and Model X vehicles built from February 2021 to January 3, 2024, the material of the steering yoke cover might be susceptible to peeling.

Correction:

Upon customer complaint that the steering yoke cover is peeling, replace the airbag and steering yoke.

Parts Required:

  • 1965131-00-A – MSX – YOKE SW ASSY, PUR, MECH HORN (Quantity: 1)
  • 1965182-00-A – MSX – YOKE DRIVER AIRBAG ASY, MECH HRN (Quantity: 1)
  • 1036655-00-A – BOLT RC M16x1.5×26 PC88 PTP (Quantity: 1)

Procedure:

  1. Check the vehicle software version on the touchscreen.
  2. Record the part number of the new replacement airbag.
  3. Remove the old steering yoke as per the Service Manual procedure. Record the part number of the old airbag that was removed.
  4. Install the new steering yoke and airbag following the Service Manual procedure.
  5. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle.
  6. In Toolbox, set Steering Wheel/Yoke Vehicle Configs.
  7.  Type in the part numbers of the new and old airbags and select MECHANICAL HORN from the dropdown list.
  8. Confirm installation of the new driver airbag and complete the routine.
  9. Perform a software reinstall from the touchscreen.

On certain Model S and Model X vehicles built from February 2021 to January 3, 2024, the material of the steering yoke cover might be susceptible to peeling (Figures 1 and 2).

NOTE: This condition is strictly cosmetic, and does not impact the functionality or safety of the steering yoke.

Correction

Upon customer complaint that the steering yoke cover is peeling, replace the airbag and steering yoke.

WARNING : The existing airbag is not compatible with the replacement yoke, it cannot be reused and must be replaced.

These part numbers were current at the time of publication. Use the revisions listed or later, unless otherwise specified in the Parts Catalog.

Procedure

  1. On the vehicle touchscreen, touch Controls (vehicle icon) > Software, and then scroll down to display the vehicle software version.
    • If the vehicle is operating with the software version 2024.2.7 (feature/das-fsd-eap-12-2-1 for FSD Beta participants) or later, skip to step 2.
    • If the vehicle is operating with a software version earlier than 2024.2.7 (feature/das-fsd-eap-12-2-1), perform a software update to version 2024.2.7 (feature/das-fsd-eap-12-2-1) or later (refer to Service Manual procedure 00020003; Model S, Model X), and then continue to step 2.
  2. Record the part number of the new replacement airbag.
  3. Remove the old steering yoke (refer to Service Manual procedure 32051802; Model S, Model X).
  4. Record the part number of the old airbag that was removed.
  5. Install the new steering yoke, and install the new airbag as part of the service operation (refer to Service Manual procedure 32051802; Model S, Model X).
    • NOTE: Delay the software reinstall for a later step.
  6. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle.
  7. In Toolbox, click the Actions tab, type “steering wheel” into the search field, and click on Set Steering Wheel/Yoke Vehicle Configs (Figure 4).1TESLA-S-Plaid-Interior-FIG \(2\)
  8. In the window that opens, type the part number of the new airbag installed, and then type the part number of the old air bag removed (Figure 5).1TESLA-S-Plaid-Interior-FIG \(3\)
  9. From the Steering Wheel Type To Install drop-down list, click YOKE MECHANICAL HORN (Figure 6), and then click Run.1TESLA-S-Plaid-Interior-FIG \(4\)
  10. Read and confirm that a new driver airbag has been installed, click OK (Figure 7), and allow the routine to complete.1TESLA-S-Plaid-Interior-FIG \(5\)
  11. Perform a software reinstall from the touchscreen (refer to Service Manual procedure 00020018; Model S, Model X).
  12. Disconnect the laptop with the Toolbox from the vehicle.
  13. Verify the operation of the horn, and inform the customer that the steering yoke no longer has a horn icon and that the vehicle horn is now mechanically activated by pressing the airbag.
