Bischoff Centuro Mini Small and Agil Scooter

Preface

Dear user,
You have chosen a high-quality Centuro Mini scooter from Bischoff & Bischoff. Thank you for your trust in our product.

The scooter is designed to offer you numerous advantages and meet your needs. The possibility of easily and quickly dismantling the Centuro Mini into transportable parts without the use of tools makes it easy to transport and use at different locations. The Centuro Mini scooter is designed for indoor and outdoor use. It is characterised by its compact dimensions as well as its small turning radius and a total length of 1050 mm. Please read and follow the operating manual carefully before operating your new scooter for the first time. The operating manual is an integral and necessary component of the scooter. Keep the operating manual where you can refer to it, and if you pass the scooter on to someone else, give the manual to the new owner.

The scooter meets the requirements of ISO 7176-14: 2008 (Power and control systems for electrically powered wheelchairs and scooters – Requirements and test methods). For users with visual impairment, this document is available as a PDF file on our internet page www.bischoff-bischoff.com.

Repairs and adjustments require special technical training and may therefore only be carried out by specialist retailers authorised by Bischoff & Bischoff.

1.1. Signs and symbols

Important! This is especially useful information on a given subject.
Warning! These are especially safety-relevant instructions. Follow the directions in the manual!

Important safety instructions

2.1. General safety instructions

  • To avoid falls and dangerous situations, you should first practice driving your new scooter on level, unobstructed ground. We recommend having an assistant with you.
  • Before operating the scooter, please check that all attached parts are correctly fastened.
  • Practice driving on level, unobstructed ground before first use. Get a good understanding for the way the scooter brakes and accelerates when driving straight ahead or a curve.
  • Please note that displacing the center of gravity by shifting the body or by adding loads may increase the risk of tipping over the scooter to the side or backwards.
  • The scooter may not be used for transport of more than one person or any additional load. Make sure to only use it for the intended purpose.
  • Be aware of the risk of trapping body parts when making settings and adjustments to the scooter.
  • Never use the scooter under the influence of alcohol or other substances that may impair your attention and/or your physical and mental capacity.
  • To overcome obstacles, please be sure to use ramps. Should it be necessary to lift the scooter over an obstacle, then only do so without the occupant. Only lift by the solid parts of the frame.
  • Avoid hitting obstacles (steps, curbs) at full speed.
  • The control unit must always be switched off when getting in or out of the scooter.
  • All road traffic regulations must be observed when driving on public roads.
  • The rear lights at the scooter must always be visible to other road users.
  • If possible, wear bright, conspicuous clothing. This will make it easier for other road users to see you.
  • Please note that the upholstery will heat up if directly exposed to sunlight and may cause injuries to your skin when touched. You should therefore cover these parts or protect the scooter from exposure to direct sunlight.
  • The seat materials comply with the flammability resistance requirements of EN 1021-1 and EN 1021-2. Nevertheless, you should exercise the necessary caution if you are smoking and refrain from putting any cigarettes down on the scooter.
  • Reporting incidents. The operator or user must immediately report 1. any malfunction 2. any change to the features or performance as well as 3. any inaccuracies in the marking or operating instructions of a medical device, which has or could have led to death or to a serious deterioration of the health of a patient, an employee or a third party, to the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices. This institute will immediately forward the notification to the operator’s competent authority and also inform the manufacturer and the manufacturer’s competent authority.
  • Please note that operation in pushing mode by disengaging the drives must take place only on a level surface. The electromechanical brake is thereby disabled. There is a danger of fatal injury if this instruction is not complied with.

The braking distance is significantly longer on a downhill gradient than on level ground. Keep this in mind when driving on sloping terrain and brake in time.

2.2. Information on EMC interference
Despite compliance with all applicable EMC directives and standards, it is possible that the scooter may affect or be affected by other electrical devices (e.g. mobile phones, alarm systems in department stores).
If you become aware of any such interference, either turn off the other device or turn off your scooter and move it outside the range of the interference.

2.3. Safety in vehicles
The Centuro Mini is not suitable for use as a car seat. Under no circumstances may it be used as such. It does not meet the requirements stipulated by ISO 7176-19. Failure to observe this instruction can lead to extremely serious or fatal injuries in the event of an accident.

Your scooter is not suitable for use on the designated buses in the public transport network.

2.4. Use on Public Roads

The scooter is designed for indoor and outdoor use. Please keep in mind that you are using public roads and therefore have to observe all road traffic regulations.
Do not endanger other road users through inconsiderate driving, especially on walkways.

2.5. Purpose
The scooter Centuro Mini is designed for indoor and outdoor use by persons with impaired mobility. It is therefore capable of travelling long distances and overcoming obstacles outdoors. The scooter Centuro S4 is classified according to EN 12184 in category B. The maximum load capacity is 136 kg.

2.6. Indications
Inability or severely impaired ability to walk due to

  • paralysis
  • loss of limb
  • defect/deformity of limb
  • joint contracture
  • joint damage (not in both arms)
  • other diseases

Provision of a scooter is advisable if the use of manually operated scooters is no longer possible because of the disability but the person can still competently operate a vehicle driven by an electric motor.

2.7. Contraindications
The provision of a scooter is unsuitable for persons

  • with severe balance disorders
  • with impaired or insufficient vision
  • with strongly impaired cognitive abilities

2.8. Declaration of conformity
Bischoff & Bischoff GmbH as the manufacturer declares under its sole responsibility that the Centuro Mini scooter complies with the requirements of Directive 93/42/EE.

2.9. Information about range
The range of the scooter Centuro Mini is 15 km. The range that can be achieved by electric scooters depends on the following factors:

  • Composition of the carriageway
  • Way of driving
  • Battery condition
  • Vehicle load weight
  • Ambient temperature
  • The use of accessories

Please note that the range specified by us was determined under test conditions:

  • Batteries as new and fully charged
  • Ambient temperature of 21°C
  • max. user weight of 136 kg
  • Level, firm surface
  • Constant speed
  • Deactivated lighting system

We wish to advise you that the following factors severely restrict the range:

  • Poor state of charge of batteries
  • Low ambient temperature (below 10°C)
  • Frequent starting and braking

Slide the three recesses on the basket onto the three brackets from above (fig. 5). Make sure that it is securely fitted.

3.5.3. Seat
The seat can be rotated, it can slide forwards and backwards and its height can be adjusted in three levels.

Rotating the seat

  • Push down the lever located on the right underneath the seat surface (fig. 7).. The seat can now be rotated in both directions.
  • There is a fixed lock-in position for the seat every 45°.
  • Release the lever and make sure that the seat is locked in position again.

Moving the seat

  • Loosen the four screws on the underside of the seat (fig. 8).
  • You can now slide the seat forwards or backwards.
  • Once you have set it to the desired position, retighten all four screws.

Seat height
You will need an 8 mm Allen key and a 17 mm wrench.

  • You will firstly need to remove the seat. Fold the backrest forwards onto the seat surface. You can easily remove the seat by lifting it upwards. To make it easier, rotate the seat 90° to the side. Take hold of it on the seat surface in front and the backrest on the rear; in a central position in both cases (fig. 9). The seat is now easy to lift and pull out of the mounting. Carefully place the seat down on its rear side. Please note that lubricant residue may be present on the seat column.

4.1. Control Functions
The controller is a component of the steering column of your scooter. It contains LED displays and functional elements.

Bischoff Centuro Mini Small and Agil Scooter - Control
Functions

Ignition key
Use the ignition key to switch your scooter on and off. To switch the scooter on, turn it a quarter of a turn to the right. (Fig. 19).

Speed setting
You can use this control dial (fig. 20) to set the maximum achievable speed.

  • Turn the controller to the left (tortoise) to reduce the maximum speed.
  • Turn the controller to the right (hare) to increase the maximum speed. If the controller is set to the hare, you have set the maximum speed.

Headlight
Use the toggle switch under your handlebars to turn on your headlight (fig. 21). This makes you more visible to other road users at dusk or dawn or when passing through dark routes such as a tunnel.

Battery status display
The battery status display (fig. 22) shows the state of charge. If all nine bars are visible, the battery is fully charged.
As you use the scooter, the battery capacity decreases and fewer bars are displayed.
If only three bars are displayed, this means that only short journeys can now be made and the battery should be recharged (see chapter 6.3.1 Charging).

Horn
The horn (Fig. 23) enables you to draw attention to yourself in difficult situations.Bischoff Centuro Mini Small and Agil Scooter -

4.1.1. Changes to the controller
Changes to the programming of the controller may only be made by an authorized supplier. Changes to the programming have an effect on the speed, acceleration and deceleration. This can lead to life-threatening injuries of the user and / or third persons if improperly carried out

4.2. Getting in and out
Ensure that the scooter is switched off before sitting on it.

  • You will find it easier to take a seat if you turn the seat 90° to the side from which you want to sit down (see chapter 3.5.2 Seat).
  • Fold the armrest up on the side on which you want to get in.
  • Now sit down.
  • Then turn the seat to face in the direction of travel and/or fold the armrest back down.

Bischoff Centuro Mini Small and Agil Scooter - Getting in and
out

Ensure that the seat firmly locks in position again.

  • Adjust the steering column so that you can comfortably reach all the controls (see chapter 3.5.1).
  • To get out, follow the instructions accordingly in reverse order. However, take out the key beforehand so that you can ensure that no unintended actions or movements occur.

4.3. Driving the scooter
You should make your first journey on a level site with ample space

Bischoff Centuro Mini Small and Agil Scooter - Driving the
scooter

  • Ensure that you are sitting correctly on your scooter. Set the speed as low as possible. You can increase the speed when you are more familiar with handling the scooter.

  • To switch on your scooter, insert the ignition key into the ignition lock on the control panel and turn the key a quarter turn to the right (Fig 27).

  • To switch off the scooter, turn the key a quarter turn to the left.
After getting out of the scooter, always ensure that you have removed the ignition key and do not leave the scooter unattended with the ignition key inserted.

  • Please make sure that you do not have your hand on the forwards /backwards lever when you switch on your scooter. This would cause your scooter to display an error message. In this case, turn it off and then on again to rectify this error.

  • Pull back the speed selection lever on the right to move forwards.
The further you pull back the lever, the higher the speed. The speed can go up to the maximum speed that has been preset using the speed control. Release the lever to stop gently. Practice these two procedures in order to get used to them.

  • Steering is easy and works exactly like a bicycle in that you turn the handlebars in the direction in which you wish to move. Leave plenty of distance when you travel around a curve so that the rear wheels are able to follow the path of the front wheels and so that you do not cut across objects.

  • Take care when reversing. Ensure that your speed is low before reversing. Please bear in mind that you need to steer in the opposite direction when you are reversing. This requires practice.
Also practice this on a level area with ample space.

  • To reverse, carefully pull the left lever (fig. 29) towards you. A loud signal sounds while reversing.Bischoff Centuro Mini Small and Agil Scooter - left lever Please note that, for safety reasons, the reversing speed is only half the speed going forward.

  • If you are cornering sharply, turn the handlebars before you accelerate. Always take wide lines around corners and obstacles and drive slowly and with care.

  • When the drive is engaged, releasing the throttle lever automatically applies a brake. The scooter then cannot be pushed or moved because the brake is automatically applied to the motors.

4.4. Pushing mode
If you want to push the scooter in certain situations, you must unlock the brakes. It is easy to push the scooter in free wheel mode.

Bischoff Centuro Mini Small and Agil Scooter - Pushing
mode| Bischoff Centuro Mini Small and
Agil Scooter - Pushing mode 2
---|---

The electro-mechanical brake does not operate in pushing mode.

  • Push the unlocking lever (fig. 30) on the right rear backwards.
  • A small jerk will indicate that the drives are now disengaged.
  • To lock, push the lever forwards again, locking then takes place automatically (fig. 31).
  • The motor has a fly clutch; if you accelerate the scooter too quickly in pushing mode, the brake engages automatically. It is only released after you come to a stop.

For safety reasons, the motor drive is locked when the scooter is being operated in pushing mode.
Caution! Danger of fatal injury! The drives may be disengaged only on a level surface.

4.4.1. Initiating emergency stop
Should the automatic brake not work as usual while driving, you can initiate an emergency stop. Proceed as follows:
Turn the key a quarter turn to the left to stop the engine. The rear wheels will block immediately. Note that you can be thrown forward by the abrupt stop. Hold on to the handlebars adequately and perform this emergency stop only in an absolute emergency.

Bischoff Centuro Mini Small and Agil Scooter - emergency
stop

4.5. Overload switch
Bischoff Centuro Mini Small and Agil Scooter - Overload
switch

The controller will cut out if the motor is overloaded, e.g. by driving uphill for too long. In this case, the ignition just needs to be switched off and on again in order to start moving again. If this does not work, this means that the controller has overheated.
In this case, please wait a few minutes. In the event of an electrical overload, the fuse will shut off the power to the scooter. The overload switch (Fig. 33) is located on the front of the seat construction (Fig. 34). After pressing the switch, the scooter should function normally again. If it does not function as expected, please contact your specialist retailer or Bischoff & Bischoff customer service.

4.6. Disassembling for transport/ storage
To ensure that the scooter is as compact as possible for transport, it can be disassembled without the use of any additional tools.

  • Switch off the scooter.
35). The seat is now easy to lift and pull out of the mounting. Carefully place the seat down on its rear side. Please note that lubricant residue may be present on the seat column.
  • The seat weighs 11.2 kg, please ask for assistance with removal if necessary. You can also first remove the armrests. Undo the screws on the rear of the frame and pull out the armrests to the side (see p. 17, chap. 3.5.4. Armrests).
  • Now release the locking mechanism for the battery unit and slide it upwards so that you can comfortably remove the battery unit.
  • Now take hold of the battery unit from the front, under the handle (fig. 36) and lift it up and out. Please note that the battery pack is also heavy, weighing 9.2 kg, so please also ask for assistance here if necessary.Bischoff Centuro Mini Small and Agil Scooter - Disassembling for transport 2
  • Now raise the unlocking lever (1) on the central part of the scooter (fig. 37) and use your other hand to pull the drive unit backwards at the rear handle (2) (fig. 38).
  • Remove the basket by pulling it upwards.
  • To place the handlebars on the floor of the scooter, undo the screw on the right above the headlight. Turn it slowly, holding the handlebars with the other hand. Once the steering column can be tilted, carefully lower it (see chapter 3.5.1. Steering column).
  • To make it easier to carry and lift the chassis, the steering column can also be fastened in a central position using the locking screw above the headlight.

4.7. Assembly

  • Raise the handlebars so they are upright once again, fasten them in your desired position and carefully retighten the screw.
  • Adjust the drive unit so that it rests on the rear support wheels (fig. 41).
  • Lift the front unit at the seat column or the unlocking lever.
  • Slide the front unit into the drive unit until it engages. This must audibly and tangibly engage with a click.
  • Now place the battery unit back into its recess (fig. 36).
  • Fasten the battery’s locking mechanism (see page 15).
  • Take hold of the seat in the centre on the rear and front (fig. 35) and allow the column to slide into the seat mount’s tube.
  • Fold the backrest and armrests back to the relevant positions.
  • If necessary, mount the basket back on the handlebars, in the bracket provided (fig. 42) (see chapter 3.5.2).

RISK OF ENTRAPMENT! Ensure that you are aware of the increased risk of entrapment when stowing your scooter.
The seat weighs 8.4 kg. Ask for assistance with lifting the seat where necessary.
The battery holder together with the batteries weighs 9.2 kg. Ask for assistance with lifting the batteries where necessary.

6.3.3. Replacing the batteries
When the batteries have reached the end of their life, i.e. cannot be sufficiently charged any more, the entire battery unit must be brought to your specialist retailer for replacement.

Bischoff Centuro Mini Small and Agil Scooter - Replacing the
batteries

Batteries must not be disposed of in domestic waste. When new batteries are purchased, the specialist retailer will take the old batteries and dispose of them correctly.
At the end of its service life, the battery unit is taken to your specialist retailer for complete replacement.

Maintenance tips for retailers

We recommend having a complete inspection of the scooter carried out at least once a year by a qualified mobility dealer. If the scooter develops any faults or defects, it must be taken to the mobility dealer immediately for repair. The information, documentation and circuit diagrams required for repair and maintenance shall be supplied to the mobility dealer on request. A training programme is available for mobility dealers. If you have questions, you can contact the B+B customer service by telephoning +49 (0)700/6000 7070.

Storage / Shipping

If the scooter is to be stored or shipped, all attachable and unsecured parts must be removed and packed individually in appropriate cartons. The individually packed parts can then be packaged together in a larger carton. We recommend keeping the original packaging and storing it with these purposes in mind so that it is available if required. Your scooter then has optimum protection against environmental influences during storage or transport.

Disposal

If your scooter is no longer being used and is to be disposed of, please contact your mobility dealer.

If you wish to dispose of the product yourself, contact local waste management companies to enquire about the waste disposal regulations that apply to your place of residence.

Use by others

The Centuro Mini is appropriate for use by others. For use by others, the scooter must first be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected according to the accompanying care and hygiene instructions.
The product shall get checked by a qualified mobility dealer for general condition, wear and shall get repaired if necessary.

Maintenance

A maintenance plan can be provided to you by our customer service.

Service life

If used as intended, and the safety, care and maintenance instructions are observed, the expected service life is up to 5 years. Beyond this time the scooter can be used continuously, provided it is in a safe condition.

Warranty

Guarantee items refer to all defects of the scooter which can demonstrably be referred to material defect or manufacturing defect. If there are complaints you have to provide a completed certificate of guarantee. We provide the statuatory warranty of 2 years for our products. For replacement devices and repairs, a warranty period of 1 year applies, for batteries the warranty is 6 months.
Please also observe the B+B care, warranty, hygiene and maintenance instructions. Your qualified mobility dealer will be happy to provide these to you.
